Flashbacks with lots of lightning, shovels, and graves excite me. The whole mystery-of-dead-girl-buried-alive is the reason I fell in love with the show, so when scenes like this appear, I'm so happy.
Here's my theory ,(and forgive my weak english) ali and spenc were fighting at the night disappeared and spenc was about to kill ali but ali toke control ! So spenc went to sleep like ali said ! At that time ali went to talk to toby and ll etc ! At that time i think mss D buried ali but she got out of it at night ! If u rememberr at the first episode spencer got up to find ali ! But she didn't means she didn't kill her ! Either with or without being under drugs affection she wouldn't say she couldn't find her if she already found her ! So if ali got out of the grave she would think it's batheny who tried to kill her so she's almost the one who tried to kill bethany with the same way she though bethany did ! And then mellissa sow her body and buried her :) If u understood my super stupid english that would make sense to u haha
Noah Khan Alison and Bethany were hitting on the head the same night, BUT in different places by the same person, that person who Mrs Dilaurentis saw... *we don't know who's that person, we believe is -A* Bethany was buried by Melissa while Alison was burried by Mrs. Dilaurentis.
This scene made me love Melissa for the rest of the show, she and Spencer would fight a lot, but this scene proved she would do anything to protect her little sister.
I really loved this Melissa/Bethany twist. It was one of the few death scenes in PLL that I didn't see coming. You could see Sara Harvey's death coming, you could see Wilden's death coming. But when Melissa sat down and told Spencer how she killed Bethany, I was truly shocked.
You guys see where Melissa buried her right? The working area, in season 3 i think that's when we see a hand reaching up from the grave. When Ali told that her mom buried her she wasn't around the working area. You can also see that they were not around the working area when Charlotte tells what happend that night. Alison explained in season 4 episode 24 (?) it could have been just a mistake they could have gone along with right? But when Melissa tells that she buried Bethany it shows us the exact location where we saw a hand reaching up in season 3.
Years late but it’s just a continuity error. It was Alisons hand that was reaching out because in another episode we saw another hand reach out and grab them confirming it was Mrs Grunwald pulling her out.
If u look at "Bethanys" wrist she is wearing the bracelet that has Alison's name on it. you can clearly see the "ison' on the bracelet if u pause at the right time.
that part i never understood unless Alison knew Bethany and Alison and Bethany both did a switch a rew thing like CECE and Allison did ; wear each other clothes and everything. But still it doesn't make since because if Bethany was ESCAPING radley that night then how did she get the Alison bracelet on her?? Bethany tries to kill Alison. Mrs D buries Alison' s body protecting Bethany. Cece kills Bethany for killing Alison. Melissa then buries Bethany's body protecting Spencer.

Crazy Child Mrs Grunwald wasn't Ali's grandma; she was a woman with psychic powers that Ali had been seeing to try and find out who A was. On the night Ali/Bethany was killed, she felt a huge disturbance in Rosewood and drove there as fast as she could and rescued Alison.
This is why I love Melissa She’s messy, can definitely be mean, always moving shady and just an overall menace but she’s also Spencer’s big sister who literally buried a girl to protect her sister and never used this against her, she really did love Spencer this whole time This is the character writing I love even though this show is a hot mess
Yes Mona hit Bethany and Melissa found her and burried her thinking that Spencer killed her, but she was alive.That way Melissa burried her alive and then she died.By Melissa.

Mona had knocked Bethany with the shovel thinking it was Allison (as she was thinking about all the hateful things Allison ever said to her) and then Melissa say the body and was fearful that it was Spencer who did it so she buried her. And Melissa then came to know that it was not Allison and she had buried a different girl alive as he does from suffocation
So from previous episodes we know that Bethany was hit on the head with the shovel (remember when the girls found it in the woods and and were taken in for questioning about killing Alison? A set them up to find the shovel and take the blame). Melissa only know that Bethany was still alive because the autopsy revealed that she suffocated to death. It is obvious that whoever hit Aliso on the head (Maybe Bethany herself) or Mrs. D (who was always buying Alison outfits) put Bethany in that outfit to possibly throw off the time of death for Ali. Or she was in the outfit for the same reason Cece was, Ali was using Bethany as a decoy so she could find out who A was. Maybe A hit Bethany by accident thinking it was Ali by mistake (either before of after Ali was hit) and was confused about who was who. The other possibility is that more than one person tried to hurt Ali that night (the girl did like to piss people off). I wouldn't be surprised if two different people wanted her dead
I like your theory/observations.. What I'm confused about is the timing of it all. If we're suppose to assume that Melissa went and saw Bethany 'dead' right after seeing her, then it was a good half and hour, possibly less, before Alison was allegedly hit and buried by her mom. But it that's the case, then Alison was buried on top of Bethany or something since they were both suppose to have been buried in the same spot.. Or, what I guess would make sense is that Melissa found Bethany later on that night after Alison had been pulled out... Maybe it's a mistake on the writer's end? Or am I missing something?
Pretty Little Liars i think someone was lying about what happen that night because remember in the first season of the video of ali and ian talking and how they fell and then kissed and left. but when ali told her story they didnt kiss and walk away. none of that happened. and she didnt mention things like how cece and melissa were talking together. cause she was up all night and didnt mention things that were said had happened
no, i think bethenany is still alive, u noticed that when ali spoke about being burried alive she ever said who got her out but i remember in the earlier season there was a hand that pulled someone out of the ground, ali and bethenany were wearing the same exact outfit,BETHENANY IS STILL ALIVE, but in the flashback when ali spoke about being buried alive totally DIFFERENT OUTFIT,and maybe cece is bethenany's twin alison's mom or spencer could have been the one 2 knock bethenany out b4 she got 2 alison or try 2 hurt her,cece or bethenany's twin could have saw this and decided 2 get revenge and return the favor by burring mrs.D alive just like they did bethenany and maybe that's what they meant by spencer u killed me but spencer just knocked her out and melissa burried her thinking that she was dead.....
Looking back based on this scene? I'm guessing she told Ian what she did that night and his unhinged reaction was his way of protecting her. He robably thought that if he got rid of the Spencer problem, Melissa would be safe especially since Spencer didn't have any memories about the events of that night at that point.
This is funny because even though Melissa kills Bethany we never got a scene of her actually talking or acting with any other character on the show. We should’ve had gotten Bethany & Mrs. D having an argument or something.
I think that Bethany got killed because of a game. I feel that there is more to it than just Melissa protecting Spencer.I think she got killed because of the NAT club, the club did like video taping everyone and pulling pranks maybe she was a part of the prank, maybe somebody dared someone to kill Alison, but they didn't know it wasn't Alison because Bethany was dressed exactly like her. I know this sounds dumb but the NAT club is connected because all of the NAT members are dead except Jason.
That wouldn't make sense becuz Mona wasn't apart of the NAT club and Melissa only buried her cuz she thought Spencer killed her Mona confessed of hitting Bethany but she wasn't dead she died from being buried alive by Melissa so yeah technically Melissa and Mona are the Killers
pause at 1:52 there's an A written with blood on bethany's head , bethany got pulled out from the grown just like Ali , Ali got pulled out by Mrs Grunwald , and in the flashback in the final of S3 Bethany was pulled out by someone who had red sleeves , either Mrs D or Spencer , but it looks a lot like Spencer's sleeve to me .
Okay something is not adding up here. Melissa said she saw Spencer with the shovel. But according to Ali, that night when Spencer was chasing Ali from the barn, she then picked up the shovel, threatened Alison, dropped it and Ali found out she was taking drugs, then told Spencer to go back to the barn and sleep, Spencer was calm by then and did not have the shovel any more. So I don't get how Melissa could've seen what she did..?
The soundtrack is so thrilling, i have heard the tune of 2:07 during all the "revelation" moments, looks like that is the main track of PLL :). I wish that the series score was available for download.
Let's break down this serie of events shall we? First, Mrs.D warns Ali not to go out after learning that someone got away (probably Bethany, so keep in mind that she's on her way to the house), then Spencer and Ali almost get into a fight but Spencer walks back to the barn with the shovel. Next thing you know Ali gets hit on the back of the head and Mrs.D burries her. BUT while Spencer was walking back to the barn (which takes like 2 seconds because they are neighbors) Melissa was hiding behind the bushes. HERE IS WHERE IT STARTS TO MAKE NO SENSE. Mrs. Grunwald appears out of no where and pulls Alison out of the ground. Then someone digs up the hole again and hit Bethany before Melissa gets there. AND DURING ALL THAT TIME MELISSA WAS ON HER WAY TO THE DILAURENTIS BACKYARD.
It isnt possi le because alison talked to arias dad right before she went back to the barn then she went home so melissa might be lying or the dire tors diddnt think this through, spencer dropped the shovel and went to the barn then melissa went to alis garden and saw bethany, but in 2 mins how could ali have spoken to ian, ezra toby and arias dad, she couldnt it doesnt make sense unless bethzny was burried first because someone thought she was alison but figured it wasnt then hit alison i am so confused ugh its been 2 seasons nearly, we want to know everything rhat happened that night

I’m the kind of older sister like Melissa. I have a younger sister like Spencer who is pretty and talented in her own way, but she is abrasive and stuck up and is constantly following me around befriending my friends (even though she was 5 yrs younger), lowkey would take my personality and try to make it her own. But no matter how crazy or annoying she was to me, I will ALWAYS love and protect her over myself. Maybe it’s a sister thing or an older sibling thing but I would definitely do what Melissa did for my sister. Even though Spencer was trying to take both Ian and Wren from Melissa, she still protected her.

And every time she bought a outfit for Alison, she bought the same outfit for Charles. Charles had privileges to go out of Radley some time because he was studying at Upenn. Bethany found out that her dad had a affair with Mrs. DiLaurentis and she got crazy, she stole Charles her/his clothes and dressed up like him/her to get out of Radley. She went to the DiLaurentis house, got hit by Mona, and Melissa buried her. But Charles saw 'Bethany' at the DiLaurentis house and he was scared that she was gonna hurt her/his mom, so he picked up a rock and hit Bethany with it, but it was not Bethany who he hit: It was Alison. Alison and Bethany had the same shirt and clothes because originally it were Charles his/her clothes, but Bethany stole it --> Charles and Alison always have the same outfit

But wait so who did Jason see talking to Melissa that night? because as far as I remember he saw Melissa and cece talking but cece was wearing the yellow shirt too but in the final episode it's shown that cece was wearing a black hoodie and she says she never talked to melissa which is a lie because in an earlier episode she admits she talked to melissa that night. It doesn't add up.
That's the one thing i don't understand. it's one of the many plot holes from the finale. Marlene said that we MAYBE will get an answer for that, i hope so.
This scene and many others from season 5 make me wish the show had been allowed to end with the season 5 finale. The show was getting very dark and revealing long awaited secrets but then got renewed for two more full seasons! This caused season 5 to become mostly filler towards the end with season 6 being half completely useless filler and the other a brand new unrelated mystery.
To make it as simple as possible: Melissa saw Spencer with the shovel the night of Ali's disappearance after fighting with her, then she saw "Ali's" body so she thought Spencer killed Ali. She buried her in order to protect Spencer, only to find out she was ALIVE and not Ali at all, but Bethany Young. I believe she was telling the truth. We still have a lot of unanswered questions though, like who hit Ali, who hit Bethany (technically Melissa killed her by burying her alive but something made her unconscious) and who changed Bethany’s clothes to make her identical to Ali?
Cece hit Alison thinking it was Bethany and Mona Hit Bethany Thinking it was Alison what Doesn’t make sense is when Jason saw Cece wearing the same yellow top they were wearing while talking to Melissa
Okay, I've realized what Jason saw -- he saw Melissa burying Bethany, but because he was high (or drunk, can't remember), he hallucinated it as Melissa talking to someone wearing the same clothes as Bethany -- and he thought it was CeCe.
I think Melissa buried Cece... I mean there was a girl there that Jason saw as Cece and was wearing that outfit. Then Cece's twin may be pretending to be Cece so she can be A and get revenge on the liars for everything. Because Cece's twin most likely believes it was the liars who buried the real Cece. I'm sure Cece told her twin about the girls getting her kicked out of college. Now of course this is if they reveal Cece has a twin. Which Sasha P. has said that someone may have a twin multiple times...

We did not see how fast Alison left the area, but what we saw was a little bit after the flashback in 4x24 ended, mere seconds, so Alison was out of sight for Melissa. What I don't understand is if Melissa buried the girl later or immediately because if she did it right away then Alison would've been basically buried on top of Bethany. Either Alison lied about where /who buried her, or there's an error in the story since both girls were buried in the same place.
The Events of that night are all messed up because this flashback indicated that Bethany was burried first because Alison got burried some times after the fight between Ali and Spencer....? makes no sense.

Weird Mona thought Bethany was Alison and hit her with a Rock then someone else barried her alive. CeCe thought Alison was Bethany and did the same and the same happened to Alison. Except Alison was found and was dug out and lived, Bethany wasn't found and died.
After the Mrs. Cavanaugh's terrible death where Bethany accused Cece of doing (Cece was still Charles back then before she became a trans), Cece really hated Bethany and called her "crazy bitch". One day Bethany found out her dad was making out with Cece's mom and Bethany who according to Cece suffered from " Intermittent Explosive Disorder" got mad then decided to dress on Cece's cloting, went out of Radley under Cece's out previlege (Cece had out previlege si ce she was studying at UPenn) to most likely hurt Cece's mom. Cece knew it, and thought she must save her mom. She saw a blonde girl, Cece hits her with a rock thinking it was Bethany, in order to protect her mom, but it was actually Alison. Mom saw it, then buried Ali alive, protecting Cece and all of her lies about Charles' fake death and alibis about Charles' existence to Jason. Mom then called Wilden to sent Cece away because it was just better for everyone. Then Mrs.Grunwald came to save Alison, driving her to the hospital but Ali ran away. In the other side, Mona saw "Ali", hit her with a rock, without knowing it was actually Bethany in Cece's clothing (we know that Cece and Ali were always bought the same outfit). Mona left then supposedly driving to the Resort, then in the way, she met Ali who was walking unconciously covered in dirt and blood on her head. In the same time, Melissa saw a body that she thought was Alison's then buried her in the very same hole where real Alison was buried, thinking she was protecting Spencer(before Alison's hitting, Melissa saw Spencer walking with a shovel after hearing Ali and Spence had an argument about something). ***** No, she was unconscious for the head wound. Not only was there blood on her head in this episode but if you remember back to the coroner's report (when they thought is was Ali) she was hit on the head with the same shovel the girls found in the woods and then burred and suffocated to death. They did an autopsy.

Extremely old comment (I was going back to old videos to remember the good parts of the series haha) but I wish that is what happened. Having the twin involved in the story from the beginning would have made the plot so much more interesting. Although there were a lot of clues in the seventh season for the audience to piece together that Spencer had a twin, revealing that Wren discovered Alex not too long ago made the story seem so forced.

i dont understand, melissa found the body there but who made the hole? when we see the flashback with ali, jenna and garet didnt have a hole there. If Jessica burried ali there like we saw, how can melissa burried this other girl in the same place? The person who killed the girl made the hole?
I understood it like this, they wanted to build something, that was the hole and then the thing with Ali happened, ms grunwald pulled her out and After that bethany was buried. it would make sense with the time i think..
Grunwald pulled Ali out of the grave which made the grave vacant. Since this whole scene (Melissa burying Bethany) happens after Ali being saved, it was the most obvious choice to bury her in there (since Bethany was injured right next to the grave and also she wanted to protect Spencer thinking that Bethany was Ali who she thought Spencer killed).
Yeah, that wouldn't surprise me, but that would still leave the question of who was in that grave, because unless Rosewood coroners can't tell the difference between a real corpse and a fake corpse, someone did die that night.
so was it Melissa who buried her ? who could have possibly killed alison? Jason? Cece? Mona? SPENCER? all these are options I think they thought she was dead and buried but she appeared to them after which is why they all became A. Maybe even Jenna? But then they realize it's Bethany? But where was Alison that night. Ian filmed in the afternoon.? Did Bethany really die? are they still alive and both of them are red coat? Why does Jason keep disappearing? How is Ezra or Wren A? where they after all this? WHO IS A? IS IT ARIA :O ? man so many questions was it Bethany that threw the rock or Jason? Do Alison and Bethany get buried at the same night? did she choose --A instead of --B to make them think it's Ali?
I guess we know what Melissa meant when she told Spencer she was protecting her since it started.

So from previous episodes we know that Bethany was hit on the head with the shovel (remember when the girls found it in the woods and and were taken in for questioning about killing Alison? A set them up to find the shovel and take the blame). Melissa only know that Bethany was still alive because the autopsy revealed that she suffocated to death. It is obvious that whoever hit Aliso on the head (Maybe Bethany herself) or Mrs. D (who was always buying Alison outfits) put Bethany in that outfit to possibly throw off the time of death for Ali. Or she was in the outfit for the same reason Cece was, Ali was using Bethany as a decoy so she could find out who A was. Maybe A hit Bethany by accident thinking it was Ali by mistake (either before of after Ali was hit) and was confused about who was who. The other possibility is that more than one person tried to hurt Ali that night (the girl did like to piss people off). I wouldn't be surprised if two different people wanted her dead
I like your theory/observations.. What I'm confused about is the timing of it all. If we're suppose to assume that Melissa went and saw Bethany 'dead' right after seeing her, then it was a good half and hour, possibly less, before Alison was allegedly hit and buried by her mom. But it that's the case, then Alison was buried on top of Bethany or something since they were both suppose to have been buried in the same spot.. Or, what I guess would make sense is that Melissa found Bethany later on that night after Alison had been pulled out... Maybe it's a mistake on the writer's end? Or am I missing something?

Looking back based on this scene? I'm guessing she told Ian what she did that night and his unhinged reaction was his way of protecting her. He robably thought that if he got rid of the Spencer problem, Melissa would be safe especially since Spencer didn't have any memories about the events of that night at that point.
This is funny because even though Melissa kills Bethany we never got a scene of her actually talking or acting with any other character on the show. We should’ve had gotten Bethany & Mrs. D having an argument or something.
I think that Bethany got killed because of a game. I feel that there is more to it than just Melissa protecting Spencer.I think she got killed because of the NAT club, the club did like video taping everyone and pulling pranks maybe she was a part of the prank, maybe somebody dared someone to kill Alison, but they didn't know it wasn't Alison because Bethany was dressed exactly like her. Melissa said she saw Spencer with the shovel. But according to Ali, that night when Spencer was chasing Ali from the barn, she then picked up the shovel, threatened Alison, dropped it and Ali found out she was taking drugs, then told Spencer to go back to the barn and sleep, Spencer was calm by then and did not have the shovel any more.
So I don't get how Melissa could've seen what she did..?
The soundtrack is so thrilling, i have heard the tune of 2:07 during all the "revelation" moments, looks like that is the main track of PLL :). I wish that the series score was available for download.
Let's break down this serie of events shall we? First, Mrs.D warns Ali not to go out after learning that someone got away (probably Bethany, so keep in mind that she's on her way to the house), then Spencer and Ali almost get into a fight but Spencer walks back to the barn with the shovel. Next thing you know Ali gets hit on the back of the head and Mrs.D burries her. BUT while Spencer was walking back to the barn (which takes like 2 seconds because they are neighbors) Melissa was hiding behind the bushes. HERE IS WHERE IT STARTS TO MAKE NO SENSE. Mrs. Grunwald appears out of no where and pulls Alison out of the ground. Then someone digs up the hole again and hit Bethany before Melissa gets there. AND DURING ALL THAT TIME MELISSA WAS ON HER WAY TO THE DILAURENTIS BACKYARD.
It isnt possi le because alison talked to arias dad right before she went back to the barn then she went home so melissa might be lying or the dire tors diddnt think this through, spencer dropped the shovel and went to the barn then melissa went to alis garden and saw bethany, but in 2 mins how could ali have spoken to ian, ezra toby and arias dad, she couldnt it doesnt make sense unless bethzny was burried first because someone thought she was alison but figured it wasnt then hit alison i am so confused ugh its been 2 seasons nearly, we want to know everything rhat happened that night

I have a younger sister like Spencer who is pretty and talented in her own way, but she is abrasive and stuck up and is constantly following me around befriending my friends (even though she was 5 yrs younger), lowkey would take my personality and try to make it her own. But no matter how crazy or annoying she was to me, I will ALWAYS love and protect her over myself. Maybe it’s a sister thing or an older sibling thing but I would definitely do what Melissa did for my sister. Even though Spencer was trying to take both Ian and Wren from Melissa, she still protected her.

Charles had privileges to go out of Radley some time because he was studying at Upenn. Bethany found out that her dad had a affair with Mrs. DiLaurentis and she got crazy, she stole Charles her/his clothes and dressed up like him/her to get out of Radley. She went to the DiLaurentis house, got hit by Mona, and Melissa buried her. But Charles saw 'Bethany' at the DiLaurentis house and he was scared that she was gonna hurt her/his mom, so he picked up a rock and hit Bethany with it, but it was not Bethany who he hit: It was Alison. Alison and Bethany had the same shirt and clothes because originally it were Charles his/her clothes, but Bethany stole it --> Charles and Alison always have the same outfit

This scene and many others from season 5 make me wish the show had been allowed to end with the season 5 finale. The show was getting very dark and revealing long awaited secrets but then got renewed for two more full seasons! This caused season 5 to become mostly filler towards the end with season 6 being half completely useless filler and the other a brand new unrelated mystery.

She buried her in order to protect Spencer, only to find out she was ALIVE and not Ali at all, but Bethany Young. I believe she was telling the truth. We still have a lot of unanswered questions though, like who hit Ali, who hit Bethany (technically Melissa killed her by burying her alive but something made her unconscious) and who changed Bethany’s clothes to make her identical to Ali?

We did not see how fast Alison left the area, but what we saw was a little bit after the flashback in 4x24 ended, mere seconds, so Alison was out of sight for Melissa. What I don't understand is if Melissa buried the girl later or immediately because if she did it right away then Alison would've been basically buried on top of Bethany. Either Alison lied about where /who buried her, or there's an error in the story since both girls were buried in the same place.

In the same time, Melissa saw a body that she thought was Alison's then buried her in the very same hole where real Alison was buried, thinking she was protecting Spencer(before Alison's hitting, Melissa saw Spencer walking with a shovel after hearing Ali and Spence had an argument about something).

Extremely old comment (I was going back to old videos to remember the good parts of the series haha) but I wish that is what happened. Having the twin involved in the story from the beginning would have made the plot so much more interesting. Although there were a lot of clues in the seventh season for the audience to piece together that Spencer had a twin, revealing that Wren discovered Alex not too long ago made the story seem so forced.

Why was Bethany Young (or the girl Melissa buried) wearing Alison' s bracelet?? you can see this at 1:52....Alison was also wearing that bracelet when her mum buried her too! They were both hit in to back of the head too. There will be a twist for sure!!
i dont understand, melissa found the body there but who made the hole? when we see the flashback with ali, jenna and garet didnt have a hole there. If Jessica burried ali there like we saw, how can melissa burried this other girl in the same place? The person who killed the girl made the hole?
I understood it like this, they wanted to build something, that was the hole and then the thing with Ali happened, ms grunwald pulled her out and After that bethany was buried. it would make sense with the time i think..
Grunwald pulled Ali out of the grave which made the grave vacant. Since this whole scene (Melissa burying Bethany) happens after Ali being saved, it was the most obvious choice to bury her in there (since Bethany was injured right next to the grave and also she wanted to protect Spencer thinking that Bethany was Ali who she thought Spencer killed).
