Splicing a loop has higher strength than tying a loop knot in the end of the rope. Eye splicing used to be a basic part of nautical, sailing and boating knowledge but now you can buy marine ropes, dock lines and anchor lines with an eye already spliced into it. Same goes with rigging and climbing ropes. You can do it yourself and have the splice just as strong.
A three strand eye splice knot can be done in nylon, poly, hemp, sisal, or cotton ropes, as long as there are three strands. Once you have finished the splicing procedure the three loose strands should be neatly braided into the standing part of the rope. You can whip the ends of the individual strands with common whipping and the whole splice can be whipped or tapered to finish.

My Dad (❤RiP) had this down pat. All our ropes had these or tidy spliced ends, and I regret not getting him to teach me. Thank you for this clear and concise tutorial; today is the day I finally learned how to do it!
Exactly what I thought😢. My Dad did that splicing for all ropes on his sailing boat and took me to sailing Trips on a lake . I never asked hin to teach me splicing and now as a 50+ year old woman I need to learn from YT.
Ditto.
My grandfather taught me how to do this 45 years ago, I was 8. Somehow I figured out how to do this about 25 years later from memory. Now I've totally forgotten how to weave the ends. Thank for explaining it like my grandfather did so many years ago. It all came back to me as soon as you started.
Thank you for reminding me of a special memory of a little boy and his grandfather..
Just like me .... good story mate
Exactly my thoughts as well... My granddad passed away when I was young. He taught me rope work Knott's and leather work. good comment.
I am a retired merchant marine bosun, good job very clear instructions.
The ropes are durable and just like the ones at the gym. czcams.com/users/postUgkxTFxba6lNeHrZaHoY_LXe6ZzmMfaipnwu Caution: I bought the 50 feet ropes and they are long and heavy so make sure you have the space (I do have the space). If I was to do it again I would probably get a shorter version as 50 feet (25 feet each side) is a little long.
This is a great help. One thing I did was color the ends of each strand to keep them straight as I was weaving.
I see so many people doing it upside down. On the fishing vessel I worked on in Alaska they taught us to flip it around and hook the loop over something so you can pull it tight tight. Trying to pull away from you tighten a splice is never as effective as toward you and tightness is importanto. Thanks for the vid
Finally...someone who knows how to keep his hands out of the way while teaching. Best video on this . Thanks you so much!
Thank you for doing this video. I learned this from my grandfather. It will be a lost art if we don’t teach the next generation 👍🏻
We eye-spliced a halyard back on to a fire service extension ladder. We took colored markers to color each of the three strands differently making it easy to trace. Worked very well. Then we discovered we cut our rope too short. Practice makes perfect they say. Thanks for your tutorial!
The clearest demo' for an eye-splice I've ever seen. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge.
This is a great tutorial. Splices are won or lost on the first tucks. This explains really well how to make the first tuck correctly.
Everytime I need to splice I always come back to this video. The easiest most basically explained splicing video there is 👌
I used to do these in scouts. We got pretty good at it, but sadly I'd forgotten how to do it. Thanks for the refresher. And thanks for the reminder of a great memory.
This brought back an old memory. Back in 1973 my sister had a horse. She had some manilla 3 strand, so I spliced an eye with a spring loaded clip on the eye. She used it for years to clip the horse to a tree while she brushed or saddled him up.
Sure I could have tied it on with a knot, but the splice is much more elegant!
Learnt this in Boy Scouts, and taught it to others in the Navy. Good job. My appreciation to you.
That was very helpful and I have now got the fenders on my boat attached by neatly spliced eyes instead of the untidy knots I had before. Might I suggest though, that the three strands are identified some way - maybe different coloured PVC tape around the ends, as it is otherwise pretty easy to mix them up as you go.
Just did an eye splice on my anchor line . Clear and concise instructions made it a breeze .
That's the clearest instructions I've seen on the eye splice. Thank you!
I really like your presentation style. Clear, no nonsense, no fanfare, no fluff with simple demonstrations. Thanks to you, I can now splice an eye in the end of a rope. Well done. Subscribed.
Thank you! So very helpful. My husband asked me to do this and I wanted to do it right😊
Thanks WhyNot. I was really struggling to eye splice a 16mm nylon mooring line for my boat & even the web pages with images weren't very clear. Your video got me on the right track & I ended up with a great new line with eye splices at both ends to replace an old one that was almost worn through. Great tutorial!
Glad it worked out for you.
This was the absolute best and easiest video to follow. THANK YOU 🙏
Thanks for posting. I had learned this 20+ years ago while in the USCG but over the years I had forgotten. How to start the splice.
After a few minutes of your video it all came back to me. Thanks for rebooting my memory.
It’s the one down on the right third strand I always failed to remember. Figured it out. Thanks.
Thank you come across this while hunting for instructions on how to re cord the close line found this much more useful and relaxing. She can hang the towels over the hand rail im getting myself a beer and some rope. Have a great day cheers
I want to hang an old ladder from the ceiling in my house with a jute. Watched the video twice and tried my first splice. Husband said it was a good as many he'd seen on boats. Thanks for easy(ish) and clear instructions. I'm confident!
Nice and clear. I have done hundreds of eye splices in double and single braid I think I’ll try it in 3 strand. Thanks.
Boy Scout 101 when I was 12. Thanks for the memories. Thanks for showing others how to do it.
Cheers Mate, I now have my trailer ropes all sorted. Easy to follow.
Just wanted to say thank you !! Best video I could find on how to do this splice.
Great video, decades ago whilst attending aircraft maintenance trade school we were taught this (including steel control cables which was really prickly), as well the back splice, which I'm all way's forgetting how to start with the proper "crown knot", so I'm subscribing just for those "old timer's" moment's :) !
Great stuff. Best eye splice tutorial I've found. Just added splices to some 5/8" Sisal to make a fresh tie-out for my doggo!
THANK YOU! I'm teaching knots to a group of teen Pathfinders (similar to Scouts but co-ed) and myself, and we were struggling with our splices. This video was very easy to follow when we couldn't get it through other instructional tutorials. We're now searching your channel for the Matthew Walker's or Double Crown knots.
My father used to do these splicing knots, but I have not learned. He passed away so many years ago. I was looking for how to do these knots for many years! Thank you very much for teaching.
Thanks WhyKnot. I been doing some of these wrong and some correct. Couldn't figure out why. It was the 3rd step. I was putting all the strands forward instead of the 3rd (right strand) one down and back. Finished product put it on the floor and roll it with your shoe. It'll help the strands flatten out and fall in place.
Wow I think I'm in knots. Love the accent and the tip for the Eye Splice. Great video.
Thank you! I have seen this knot but never knew how to make one, now I have an idea! Thanks again.
Nice! This allowed my to splice the rudder ropes on our Gig! Thank you!
Excellent explanation. Also, I clicked the video expecting to hear another US-American speak, but your awesome 'Strayan accent put a smile on my face!
Best 3strand splice video I seen.
this is the easiest to follow tutorial i have seen so far on Eye splices THANK YOU!
Marie-Clare Parks I'm glad you could follow. Thanks for your feedback.

Thank you! You saved my life
I just spent hours trying to do a "Pro Splice" as described by Brion Toss in his book. This is much, much easier to follow!
Perfect 👍 I just followed your steps and spliced two loops in my rope first time 🤙🤙🤙
Clearest, simple and concise instructions. Thank you.
Great video, I'm about to make some tricep rope attachments for my gym/weights setup and this has helped hugely!
Thankyou 👍
Scouts was a long, long time ago. Thank ya sir, for the refresher.
Excellent job teaching a slightly difficult knot,
Thank you
Really clear explanation... and nice to finally hear an Aussie using the metric system.
Of course, I just HAD TO SUBSCRIBE. Cheers from Broken Hill, Rolf
Nice Video I haven't done this since I was a kid and my dad showed me. I needed one and totally forgot how to do this **correctly** great tutorial and brings back memories of dad showing me....
Great job. Takes me back to my scouting days. Thanks for sharing.
Clear, well done instructions. Picked up some good points by watching someone do this.

Best video I have seen on braiding rope. My first one looked like a pro did it.
I've been braiding these for years and your demonstration is correct and easy to follow. Thank you!
It's not easy to follow! I've been watching the video for 3 Days. It still makes no sense!
@@xv7501225 over one and under one. There are only 3 so it’s quite easy.
Great vid, have seen a few on here, you show how I was taught to do a splice by my father who had served as a signalman on a WW2 destroyer, and a I am always making mooring lines for pals with narrow boats and dog leads, but really struggle with 8 core multiplait...
Clear Concise and No Bullshit. You are a gift from God, thank you.
Best instructional video on the subject. Thank you!
I was looking for this method for jewelry. Thank you for posting this
Thanks for your video so I know how to make a loop . I'm so happy when I finish my robe without you I won't do it. And thanks to CZcams. Thanks
finally, someone that has figured out how to show this technique with the correct camera angle. Thank you
Thank you ! Finally ! I did it thanks to you !
Great video with No useless rhetoric! A quality demonstration and explanation!

Nice job. I never knew how to do those. Wish you would have shown the final finished up splice but this pretty much gives the gist of it all.
Thanks from Austria. Very easy to understand, great job.
Perfect. Thank you from France
hey thanks a lot for this. by far the best tutorial on this!
Super easy to understand! Very good explanation, thank you!
Excellent job. You explained slowly enough to follow and didn't say "Easy peasy" once. Everything is easy when you know how but not until then. Thank you!
One of the best splicing vids.
Thank you, key part for me was the start and identifying middle, left and right! Cheers buddy
Thank you. This is a really great explanation. As always.
Great tutorial mate, very easy and clear to understand. Thank you. Regards Scott.
superb...Thanks to your detailed and very clear video...finally managed to do a splice

Excellent explanation and illustration. Might have to try for my dinghy.
Very clear instruction. Thanks. I have often made a pigs ear of it in the past!

Nice, simple explanation, THANKS!
omg pfff FINALLY, i live in Belgium and searched for a splicing video in my country, but they all sucked and were unclear, thank you very much for this video, it finally succeeded! tomorrow i have my exam ! :D
Thanks for the nice clear video. Very good! :-)
Very clear instructions. Thank you so much!
Thanks for this; a great explanation of the process. I look forward to exploring your other videos.
Do you have any further tips for doing this with natural rope?
What a great demo. So simply presented. Thx & liked.
Good video. My first attempt was serviceable but untidy. Next time, I will colour code the 3 ends so I don't lose the sequence.
Great video, thank you for sharing.
Nice work. Clear and easy to understand. Thankyou for a great "how to" video...
