This is the best instructional I have seen on making a long splice since I was taught marlinspike seamanship by an English sailing instructor in Maine (USA) in about 1960. What you omitted is that synthetic rope is more slippery than hemp or manila rope, so the length of the overlap needs to be increased accordingly. And a long splice is NEVER as strong as the rope it is made in, which is why the short splice should be used wherever possible.

Actually, the short splice isn't as strong as the rope either, but it is stronger than a long splice.

Nice, thank you, enjoyed,l put the half tails in centre of rope. Makes me happy you have the right terminology for splicing. From an old wire & fibre rope splicer, thanks.

Nice and clean result. Have taken over as a bell tower maintenance and have a workshop booked so researching how to splice ropes; both long like here and short splicing. Much cleaner result with the long splice shown here, will work with the movement of the bell rope through the various ceiling/floor openings between the Sally and bell framework.
    Thank you.

How much of the rope strength is lost with long splice? I thought of using it to extend my anchor rope. I believe the size of my rope is more than enough for the size of my boat hence lost of some strength from long splice shouldn't be an issue.

What are you doing, if you have a four strand rope?
You also leave one in the center or you twist two to the right and the other two to the left?

Excellent basics and fundamentals, good basic understanding and starting point for a person who has no knowledge of doing such a task. Thanks very much for your time and I can not wait to get some waste rope and practice God Bless and good luck cheers Les 🙈🙉🙊

Nice camera work, voice over, and information- but you could edit this down to about 4 minutes and "the cutting room floor" wouldn't cry ;-) Thanks for posting!

Thanks for the helpful video. How do I splice a very soft rope? It doesn't seem to go well with this method.

A lovely video, spoilt by lots of silence.
When training people, pretend that they are 3 years old and tell them everything you are doing and why. Pointing your fingers as an example means very little, unless the people are mute and understand sign language. Look up the word Pedagogy... I enjoyed the video, Thank you.

I really do not think so wire rope can slip very easy and i watch a guy do it on my boat and he did it another way,, try to find a video on how to do it right because you can get hurt very badly if not killed if it comes apart,, good luck and be careful.

Do complete just one is enought, two remain same. Don't do three all, waste time!
