Scratch Build #8: Parker Industries Process Building

- Here is a quick (relatively speaking, for me...) video on the scratch build for what I am calling the "process building" in the Parker Industries complex. This is the name- Parker Industries- I will use for the "left side" of the Sharon, PA area. I am incorporating Shorty Parker's Erie Builders scratch built conveyor/storage silo into this area. I obtained this building from Shorty prior to his passing, as he was dismantling his beautiful HO scale layout.
I needed something to tie in the silo with the rest of the area. I am not using the building in a prototypical way, but I am insistent on using Shorty's building. So I came up with a scheme for the complex. I started with a Walther's kit- Aggregate Rail to Truck or something like that as I liked the look of the twin silos. I then needed something to tie the silos to Shorty's building- thus the "process building" was created.
This was built using Monster Model Works brick and cinder block 1/8" thick wood sheets. I had this material and figured I might as well use it. I didn't have enough for the back wall, so my man Bill Schopf graciously provided me with a sheet of Gatorboard. I cut a 6" x 24" piece for the rear wall, painted it Zinc Chromate primer and was good to go.
I "borrowed" two window/door pieces from another Monster Model Works kit- the Machine Shop. I like the kit but don't have a place for it, so decided to use the pieces. The rest is fairly straightforward scratch building- braced the walls internally, added a light bar for interior lights and added four exterior lights. Roof is also a piece of Bill's Gatorboard. Roof details were added as well as some exterior extras for around the building, and onto the layout it went!
The video includes a final segment(s) on the incorporation of the Process Building and Shorty's building into the entire complex. I am very happy with the final result, and hope Shorty would be as well.
The area needs a bit of scenery and detailing which will commence right after I post this video!

Really great industrial area you have now. Your style of building production is an inspiration. Thanks! (and we like the babbling! 15mins? that'll be the day we don't want to see, keep it long!) What would look nice is the word "PARKER" in big letters running down the chimney. See that a lot all over the world. The workers enter from the front of the building which is the other side against the back drop - simples!
Parker Industries parking is above and beyond the retaining wall in the rear with stairs running down the front of the wall behind the structure where you cannot see them. Great looking industry, because sometimes fictional is just fine. Thanks Rob.
I agree! I posted essentially the same thing... The front of the building would be the Street represented by the background. Parking would be there as well. No need for access roads in back just some local small roads for small equipment... All the product gets shipped by rail.

Rob, again you deserve to give yourself a pat on the back with no apologies. You have worked hard and the results are stunning. A modest man you are. I would say the workers at Parker Industries enter from an access road on the other side of the viaduct, perhaps. It looks like the backdrop may help with that theory. When you get the scenery in it will be another great project you have completed on your beautiful layout. What a nice tribute to Shorty. Thanks, enjoyed every minute of the it.

As far as the roads are concerned You know there's fluctuation in different elevations of road crossings. Even in some buildings. However You have a knack for making it work. You really have a right to be happy with that whole area. You have done a magnificent job with that whole area.It's museum quality work.
Just a suggestion, it could be a sand blasting industry. You would have to turn Short’y’s tower around and put the tower next to the building and have sand unload at the low end of the convairer belt

Turned out very nicely and links into Shorty's building. There must be millions of plain rectangular buildings in the world, but as modellers we always want odd shapes and bits sticking out! I think you were quite restrained........for the moment!
Road access to Parker Industries - How about a blank (ie, black, no in depth detail) tunnel mouth in the back wall to the left of the smoke stack with a large vehicle (or two) blocking the "view"? So access is from off stage/scene and not across six or seven busy tracks. Just a thought.
I am sure that "Shorty" loves what you have done. Maybe another set of steps down from the Viaduct on this side would give workers access to Parker Industries. Martin. (Thailand) Just one note the bases under the silo's stick out like a sore thumb. Darkening down may help. (Just suggestions)
Looking great! Almost needs its own switching railroad to handle the area. For access to parker.. why not a tunnel through the facade in the background. That way it can be hidden in the far back and not have to worry about the inside.

Rob you have done yourself & Shorty Parker proud as the whole area just pops/gels perfectly. That back scene was always maoooosive and knew the Westinghouse would be big to suit. It all just blends in with the back scene on many dimensional levels as well. you said june, i said 6th D-d=Day or SID Sharon Is Done day ( only done but not complete ) as we know how you Love your going back later for extra detailing the icing on the cake 😂 cheers ken uk

You don't have to worry about a road because that is the back side of the factory by the tracks and the front opens up to what would be the street side on your background so that is how employees would access the plant...
I sure think it's about as perfect as I wish I could ever get on my RR! I was thinking the same as a previous comment.. some type of maybe quanset shape tunnel under the conveyor into the back wall? 🤗

Catching up on some of your videos. Really liked this build, definitely cool. Like the technique of using what you have and making it look functional and serving a purpose. Exact as real world or not, you definitely make it apparent it fits and functional.

I agree with George, if you cut a one car/small box truck opening in the stone wall where there is a space that goes under the convey belt that should solve your entrance to the buildings, there is even enough space for a small parking lot area too.... Well done btw keeping this video under 30 mins....
Rob, Shorty's tall building is a redi mix concrete plant, I loaded at an old style plant like that long ago. Parker industries looks great,, you have the talent.!

Just an idea for a road. You could have one come from behind the building conveyor then turn and come under the conveyor as a worker access. That way you aren’t dealing with crossing all of the tracks up front.
The access road is no problem as you have the walls against the background, so there might be a street right there, maybe you could punch a hole in the the wall, add a photo of a street view and hide it with gates and a security shack as I guess the property was not to be accessed by the public!

Think about it as the back side an the parking comes from the front side like your road way just down from it

Build a walking bridge over the tracks like the one the LVRR used in Sayre, Pa.
Looks good, I guess it depends on what you are processing. how about a dump pit by the conveyor building where you can spot hoppers and then put a load out area for the tank cars by those vertical tanks to load the processed materials .
Really good job there Rob. Didn't know that making a mess of the paint work on the brick would enhance the look of the finished building so well. Question - do you know what happened Shorty's Sandusky coal loader? That was an amazing piece of engineering that shouldn't be lost. Looking forward to a time when we get to see trains running through Eugene Yard :)
Thank you- and on Shorty's unloader- he donated it to the Maritime Museum of Sandusky. So it is still in existence, and viewable by the public.
