Railfanning the Bennett RR: The Eugene Turns works Lake City

  • Cletus and I caught the Eugene Turn working Lake City. We also made a quick side trip over to Wallace Junction and caught a coal train coming off the Olean Branch.
WARNING: It seems the Sarcoidosis in my lungs is going to be an issue when making these types of videos. During editing I noticed (and it annoyed me!) my breathing. To try and mitigate and still post this video, I reduced the sound level of the base clip and added in some gentle bird sounds to help hide "Darth Trainious" from the soundtrack. I may try totally muting the recorded sound and add in some train sounds on future attempts but that takes a lot of time and effort. I suggest you do NOT raise the volume- just enjoy a nice, quiet and relaxing video of some train action.
    Thanks for watching!

Thank you for taking the time to do this.!!! That was awesome!!! I love the background sounds and especially enjoyed the locomotive sounds being played at a low level, I think many people overlook the fact that when it comes to sound equipped locomotives that less is more, it gives more depth to the scene and sounds more natural. Excellent work!!!!

So relaxing to watch after work. What a wonderful layout. Such detail and care. I’ve watched those scenes grow and come together from my comfy chair and now get to enjoy the fruits of your labor from that same chair. Hats off to you sir.

Even though we're all suppressed by this terrible Covid-19 virus; It was really nice to see some ops on your railroad. You put so much work into it so everything looks as authentic as anyone could make it. Adding sound during operations is also impressive. Your landscaping talents looks so realistic and and leads the way in standards for the rest of us to follow. Happy railroading!

Others have said it and I agree.....perfect. Beautiful scenery with lots of detail yet without clutter and chaos. Nice camera work too. I could actually keep the sound on and not get fatigued by loud non-stop diesel engine sounds. The trains don't run a light speed and you can take in the scene and details. Brilliant!

I really enjoy this type of video, when you post them. To think back to all the videos you have done, from the teddy bear fur hill side to the yard. some of the housing projects you have done, the bridge over pass to the field with the tractor. Just so cool to watch the train tie it all together, in something you can get lost in, as far as realism goes. All the time you spend in the detail, humor, and explanation of each video.
And you did so with this video as well, telling a story as we follow the daily job of the crew.
I just want to say thank you. you are an inspiration to myself, and I am sure to a few others as well.
Have yourself , and your family. A wonderful, safe and happy holiday season.

  • @Hvitserk67
    @Hvitserk67 Před 3 lety

Fantastic and the whole scenario is really realistic. I can really identify with the time period and context, not from the USA/Pennsylvania, but from Norway. The long and heavy trains did not (and do not) come with coal, but with timber and the trains can be really long. In the 70s, it was common with a double set-up NSB Di3 diesel locomotives with a single upper headlight, for such transports. The Di3 locomotives are a German/Swedish variant of the General Motors EMD F7 locomotives with the EMD 567 V16 engines (licensed and built in the respective countries and hugely popular in northern Europe). The European version was symmetrical front/rear. Even today, 4-5 of these locomotives are still used on the Ofoten line where they haul iron ore 12 daily from Kiruna in Sweden to Narvik in Norway - and this is further north than Fairbanks in Alaska.
The time period is interesting (ie for your model building) because it announces a change between old and more modern times. Here in Norway this shift took a little longer and when I grew up in the 70's I saw much of the same as you try to express in your layout with really old buildings and infrastructure along with more sporadic modern designs like gas stations (they always came first and were in their own way modern landmarks) and fx the development of roads from gravel roads to asphalt roads. Thanks for sharing :)

Stephen the railroad has come a long way man!! You have captured the New York state
features to a T!! Reminds me of N.E, Ohio where I lived in a town called Perry, Ohio where
the Pennsy and the New York Central had rails running from Buffalo area to Cleveland and
points beyond. Isn't model railroading fun? Oh well you have given me reason to get back to
my n scale layout of the Pennsy and Reading railroads in the rural area of Pottstown PA and points beyond. I'm modeling Pottstown from what a fellow model railroader who lived in the town has told me about it. With some of my own twists of embellishment to make it more fun to operate with set outs and run through's. Well keep up the great work!!

great job! Bravo! i am so glad to see your layout finished , especially with Lake City. the tractors for sale at the feed store, the traffic lights working, the Sinclair station, etc.
i vaguely recall the 50s as i was just old enough for Kindergarten when they ended. the 50s is a little vague for me since i was not quite able to comprehend my world. i do recall some of the scenes like what is on your layout. i loved watching the train work, very interesting. perhaps, it would be in the budget of Yokel Electric to buy a locomotive for switching. it may be worthwhile bringing it before the board of directors. Maybe you should talk to Cletis. i never saw Wallace Junction complete and then in operation as well.
i think Cletis and Joe Yokel should run for mayor of Lake City. Where's the lady sitting in the outhouse LOL)?
Sinclair brings back childhood memories. I remember having a toy green Brontosaurus like the Sinclair brontosaurus. I watched it being molded. Perhaps somebody could buy the old warehouse and build a lumber company in its place.
I love the background noise of the Mourning Dove, a Cardinal and a crow. I think i also heard a dog barking, i was so absorbed into the layout i didn't notice the distractions like the ceiling lights, etc. i imagine it is stuff that has to be overlooked and i have learned to ignore them and use my imagination.
    Merry Christmas!!!

Hi Rob and a Merry Christmas to you.🎄
Nice to see you having some fun with the layout, just "playin' trains". This is when all that hard work pays off. You've got some great spots for photography and everything looks fantastic. All the details in the scenery and infrastructure have come together beautifully and you have a thoroughly convincing scene there.
I've commented before about the native bird-life; it really does add a little something to these views. Does the tweeting get played on the layout, or just on the video? For all it's effective, I could imagine operators getting fed-up with it on a long ops session.😁
The only time when the "realism" slipped, a wee bit, was you two driving like maniacs back to Lake City. It's maybe different over there but, here in Scotland, it's only the 𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑎𝑚 𝑔𝑢𝑦𝑠 🚂 who do that. We diesel photographers 𝒂𝒍𝒘𝒂𝒚𝒔 drive carefully, with courtesy and consideration for fellow road-users - honest!!😂
Thanks for taking us with you.

I do have a Dreamplayer on the layout that can play background sounds- birds, dog barking, airplane overhead, etc. BUT- you are correct it needs to be carefully balanced, or it does get annoying. Similar to sound equipped locos- fun and neat to listen to, but for a longer Ops Session even this can get on your nerves! Some people love it, most seem to like to run with sound but at a low volume, and they tend not to use the bell, whistle, etc. as would the prototype.

@@robbennett1965 Not familiar with Dreamplayers but I've heard a few layouts with ambient sounds at exhibitions. The volume level is 𝑠𝑜 important or, as you say, it'll get on everyone's nerves. Never thought of "a dog barking"; that could be quite a cool effect, as long as you remember to put a dog somewhere relevant on the layout.😁

Looking GOOD! Is the premis that this is shared trackage (Pennsy and NYC?). This SCENE really looks RIGHT. (natch, Mr. Detail Maestro)

Anything Pennsy, I love! Are you going to add working crossing gates to the street scene, just back of the traffic lights?

One question: are the bird sounds an effect for video or are they actually on your layout and if so what method did you use?

LOL, yeah just some sounds I found somewhere on the Net. Wouldn't be cool to have real HO scale birds flying around? I bet it would drive my cats CRAZY.
