Bowing any percussion instrument makes amazing sounds. Bowed vibraphone is definitely my favorite though, especially with the motors creating vibrato.
Another really unique sound that a piece once called for, I had to put an upside down suspended cymbal in the middle of a timpani head, and did a cymbal roll while changing the pitch of the roll with the timpani pedal. Really cool sound. Percussion is the best.
Btw for the first one, the person used a German double bass bow. It was able to make a somewhat cohesive noise (but still enough to make you squirm) bc nowadays most string instruments have metal strings (used to be pig intestines but that’s not relevant)
Just thought it’d be a cool couple of facts to share :)
