- This is the update for week 55 of my journey with Oropharyngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma, more easily identified as "throat cancer" or "base of tongue cancer." In this video, I talk about my nine month post-treatment follow-up visit to the UT MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, the good news, and the not-so-good news I received while there. Thanks for watching!

11/1/23. How are you doing?
Hi, @sallymccoy6286! Thanks for writing. I’m sorry I missed your question the other day. I’m actually going to MD Anderson tomorrow (11/2) for my annual follow-up visit. They’re supposed to be in June, but “the COVID” pushed everything back, so I see my ENT in my hometown arounf my actual treatment completion anniversary and MDA six months later.
To answer the question from your previous comment, I’m as healthy as I’m going to be. I still have a laundry list of issues, but things could be a LOT worrse. I’m able to work full time and to go to work most days. Food is okay but not the joy it used to be. Tastes are still limited and I still can’t handle really spicy hot foods … like black table pepper. LOL!
My heart condition is “under control” but showing no improvement or signs of resolution. Though no one wants to admit it, I’m pretty sure that - along wiht the scarring in my lungs - is risidual radiation damage … the gift that keeps on giving.
What it all really comes down to is: I’m glad I went through treatment and, yes, knowing everything I know now I would have made the same decision to have treatment, though I probably would have pushed for a lower dose of radiation.
All of my side effects are either manageable or tolerable as is. They’ve essentially told me that - short of divine intervnetion or some new breakthrough - none of this is going to get any better. But that’s okay, because they also said it likely won’t get any worse other than the natural progression of aging.
I haven’t made any new videos because I really don’t know what to say. “I’m still kickin’ … not as high or as hard as I used to, but I’m still kickin’” just doesn’t seem to justify bothering people with a new vid.
Thanks for checking on me. I hope you’re doing well!
Start eating more fruits and vegetables eat garlic, onions, fucking kale with fresh chopped broccoli. Drink green tea.
I might consider eating more fruits and vegetables and, possibly, even garlic. But - no matter how sick I might get - I'm not doing that with kale, with or without the fresh chopped broccoli. Enjoy your green tea! ;-)
