- We managed to get our hands on the relatively new Nikon Z 600 f/6.3 and Z 180-600 f/5.6 - 6.3 to head out to the Red Bull King of the Air. We put two of Nikon's most popular super teles to the test in some extreme conditions and they held up incredibly!

Good job ! Sorry for my english, I’ m frenchspeaking... nobody is perfection ! 😂 for me, there are 2 big differences between those 2 very nice lenses. The best photo is one you have been able to take... I mean.. maybe you will take the lighter one with you ( 600mm pf ) with other lenses in your bag for your trip and you will not take the 180-600 because heavier... one point ! After that, zoom will be better to frame a pic.... certainly ! But if you have not with you ... pity! Secondly, 600 mm pf will focus much faster.. so, you get many chances to get an unblurred photo... if you need it: for landscape, no problem, for birds, you need it. So, the 2 lenses are very good, but depends on what you want to do with .... light ( 600 pf), you take it with you and you focus better .... zoom, you get more possibilities of frame but maybe you loose the possibility to take the photo cause its weight or its slower focus.... life is choices...
Absolutely, the best lens is the one you have! And these two lenses are definitely for different uses.

Nice video. I currently have a 500mm f4 and want to be fully into the z mount. I'm hoping they bring out a 300mm 2.8 tc lens that I could the pair up with the 600mm pf. If not it would be the 400mm 2.8 tc and have the 180-600 for the versatility.

Excellent. How is the background blur in the 300-600 range of that zoom?
It obviously depends on the spacing between you, your subject, and the background. But when you do blow out the background it looks fantastic.
Excellent video with a lot of common sense thrown in. I just made my choice and ordered one of these today. There is one other consideration that you didn't mention. Nikon will probably address in the future, but for now, it made the decision for me. The consideration? One of the lenses has been out for a long time but is still unobtainable, and the other is in stock and immediately available from the major dealers. I finally cancelled my long-standing order for the non-existent one and placed an order for the lens that is available. This way, I can start using a lens this week instead of waiting until some unknown time next year.
Thank you! Availability is definitely something you need to consider. Some are happy to wait for what they want, but some want something to shoot with ASAP, depends which camp you're in.
@@OrmsTV Since I already had the Z 100-400mm, "sacrificing" zoom flexibility and going with the S-line Prime was probably the better choice for me. Your video helped me decide to go ahead and $pend the extra $$. Thank you!

The prime is 3 times more expensive, and I don’t really get it. They are both F6.3 at 600mm. With the zoom you get a range from 180 to 600mm......so for me that one shuld be more expensive.....
I thought backlight was the nemisis of all PF lenses.
I've had my Z600pf for a month and pick it up every day! Out of this world fun to use and sharp! Works great with my TCs and the IQ is awsome edge to edge. I've handheld it all day on my Z7II the combo weighs just 2.06kg (4.6 lbs) at the zoo all day. I bet you can't hold the Z180-600 to your face for up to a minute waiting for a bird to fly off the perch (I can and do). You just compared two lenses that aren't in the same league just because they're 600mm. You couldn't have made it any more obvious. To tell the truth, if you don't have or don't want to spend the money you can't go wrong with the Z180-600 It is a great lens and Nikon did well here. Yet, I have friends with the Z180-600 (in forums) and they've said it's a great lens but it has been said, it's a little front-heavy, the sweet spot is around 500mm, and as for edge-to-edge IQ, the Z600 prime is clearly better. Oh and the Z600pf AF is definitely faster. Is it worth the money? The people that have it ... will tell you, yes! Size and weight alone make it so.
180-600 beats the 600.
Say prime for 600 f6.3 and save 6 syllables. Say zoom for 180-600 and save another 6. Cut your video down by a few minutes and make it easier for your audience to follow.
none of them (the lenses you show) is a "power hose of the Nikon system...
The 600mm PF should have been a f/5.6. At f/6.3 it’s harder to choose over the cheaper lens.
They do make a 600 f/4 but its obviously a lot heavier and more expensive but I suppose a 5.6 would fit well between the 180-600 and the 600 f/4.
