  • In order to use body armor in conjunction with ALICE LBE gear, you will need to make a few modifications. Also, there are a few mods that I found to work out well in terms of making the system more efficient.

    I like what you did here. One of the best ,thought out ,combat gear set-ups I've come across. I like and use deuce gear, the Alice butt pack and ammo pouches with my plate carrier in similar fashion but I prefer yours much better from what I see. Thanks for making it necessary fir me to go spend some more money and search out some of these items.

    This is really well thought out! I have a MOLLE vest, but grew up with ALICE in the 82nd. Using it, along with my basic AR has me in a good place skill wise. I have so much time using those 2 that converting to an AR carbine with optic and MOLLE made me feel like a fish 🐟 out of water.

    Hey I really appreciated this video. I started out years ago with mags and pouches all over my plate carrier, and eventually started taking them off in favor of mounting to my belt. I had been thinking about getting an e-LBV suspender rig for my battle belt, but seeing this video sealed the deal for me. Waiting for the new suspenders to arrive in the mail, looks like the shoulder padding will help distribute the weight of my steel plates a little better. Thanks again, just found this channel & subbed.

    Looks very much like old British 1958 Pattern gear as you said. Very neat concept I was thinking about myself, but then I got a set of British PLCE (their updated version of P58/ALICE) to play around with.

    Really great doctrinal set up. I'm starting to shift away from plate carrier centric kit philosophy and more toward the scaling of gear philosophy where I can choose armor or not and not have to set up my system any differently. I think with your set up, a PACA style vest makes a lot of sense. The slickness of the PACA has the advantage that it wont' get caught on shit as you're walking, or on your gear when donning/doffing. The idea that I can scale the PACA to have soft armor for pistol threats (what you're most likely to encounter) or up to rifle threat plates also appeals to me. If you ran that with a chest rig or belt kit (as you've done) I think you'd get the best bang for your buck as far as preparedness kit goes that's actually purpose driven and not just for LARPing. (lol)
    I will say too, that if you don't want to use a sleeping mat material on your belt kit, Qore performance makes a real good pad that keeps you cool and allows air flow so you can stay comfortable. They're pricy, but I've worn a set on my IOTV in summer and it's night and day. Highly recommend.
    Cheers!

      @@doitriteak I would think triple mag pouches for M-16 would carry triple extra mags each for .308, as the mags are generally an inch shorter and inch wider across the broad sides of the mags ( 6 high and 3 wide on the broad sides, which is how I would orient them in the mag pouches, broad sides forward instead of thin sides forward. The 100 round MOLLE 2 SAW gunner pouches make great triple mag pouches for .308 20 rounders for a lot cheaper than purpose built .308 mag pouches. They are $20 for a 2 pack at Coleman's Surplus, and that's what I carry extra .308 mags in on the RACK vest I have set up for .308

    Nice set up. I sewed up my own front plate carrier and use a Battle Steel 3 dynema plate with thin 1.5 inch webbing straps. I rock a butt pack. I use plastic buckles to quickly attach or detach the butt pack. The excess paracord on my H suspenders allows me to tie the top of my buttpack Via its D rings higher up on my lumbar area, while securing the main body of the buttpack with Alice clips to the belt. And I can quickly untie it from the D rings from my H suspenders and use the male buckles at the top of the buttpack to snap into female buckles on the belt. This drops the buttpack to the low position so I can wear a backpack. I use a Condor nylon gun belt and use mostly MOLLE pouches. Alice pouches are secured vis zip ties.

    I'm testing my new setup and I have the twin SAW pouches at the back as well. I have a buttpack stuck in the mail system (gotta love USPS) that I plan to hang from the rear hooks on my M67 H-style suspenders so I can use it as a musette bag for day trips or patrol/assault, or swap it into the typical position for when I'm carrying a ruck. In that situation I plan to move one SAW pouch forward to the hip, as I only carry one canteen on the belt at the moment, and the other SAW Pouch I can stuff into said buttpack or into the ruck. I know some have complaints about the H-suspenders but I like the modularity of the M67 version. I'm hoping my ideas work as well in practice though - that will be the real test.

    Pretty cool setup, man. Personally, I don't run plates or even plate carriers sans plates, despite the extra real estate they provide ( I would rather carry that extra weight in ammo. Plus, I run AKM and sometimes .308, so I use Russian chest rigs and tac vests, the ANA Vest Alpha chest rig and the Spetsnaz Tactical Vest, since they are designed and built around the AK ), with a RACK vest set up for .308 ( CETME and Rhodesian FN FAL copy, since I couldn't afford an H&K G-3 and Belgian FAL in the 90s when I bought them ). I am a big proponent of carrying lots of extra mags and ammo, since I'm a civilian and, if SHTF happens, there isn't combat resupply in the field ( except for people who force me to shoot them and whatever I can find/scavenge/loot ). The main things I see missing from your setup ( at least I would want them ) is a good, powerful handgun with plenty of extra mags for it ( unlike most people seem to, I view the pistol as a viable and necessary combat weapon that I have affinity for. My main pistol is a Glock 21 .45ACP in a thigh holster ), a good combat knife like a KA-BAR, and bayonet for your rifle. All of that goes on my pistol belt ( the military, green type, like yours ), along with the mag recovery pouch. Rifle mags, drugs and meds bags, and trauma, kit all on/in the chest rig/tac vest. Water is carried in a hydration bladder on my back of the chest rig/vest, in the large ruck, and the assault pack ( also steel bottles in ruck ). Even tho our setups differ, you definitely have a good, solid rig that will stand up in combat. I enjoyed the video and seeing what various people carry and how. Oh, almost forgot, if memory serves me, the British webbing setup has 2 triple mag pouches and two double mag pouches as far as ammo carry for their SA-80s

    The British PLCE ammo pouches do carry 3 magazines each. But from what I've been told they don't carry 12 mags. They have 6 mags strong side, and in the other ammo pouches, they put 2 frag bombs in one pouch, and a smoke or flashbang in the other.

    • @cthulhu6697
      @cthulhu6697 Před 3 lety

      +Drauga man Ah, I thought it was 2 triple and 2 double mag pouches, whatever they put in them. Personally, I would carry a lot more rifle mags, as well as a pistol and double mag pouches for it.They do make purpose built grenade pouches, and the mess kits and some other kit the British military carries on their PLCE webbing gear ( a great combat load carrying system which I really like ) belongs in ruck, not on their line 1 and 2 gear I don't understand who decided that 210 rounds ( a 30 in the rifle and 6 extra 30s ) was a good combat load. My general rule of thumb is at least 10 extra ( plus 1 in the rifle and another clipped to it with a magazine coupler like a Mag Cinch or Mako, or even "jungle clipped" with duct tape and inverted, Vietnam style ) rifle mags and at least 6 extra mags for the pistol ( I personally view the pistol as being a viable combat weapon that should be part of every kit ), especially with rounds like the 5.56x45mm ( a high powered .22 that would not be what I would want in a main battle rifle ) and 9x19mm everyone loves so much and gets all butt-hurt when I rag on their pet calibers and platforms ( M-16/AR-15s, 5.56, and 9x19mm suck. There, I said it. Guarantee I will get comments by a bunch of whiners that will act like I bitch-slapped their mothers because I choose different weapons and calibers, and what they think and like is Holy Writ that must not be contradicted or you're going to hell ).
      As fast as ammo goes in real world gunfights, that would be the bare minimum, you wouldn't be carrying that much ammo after even your first enemy contact, even if you're just breaking contact with a superior force. Yeah, it's gonna be heavier. Whatever, if they're such bad-asses they should be young and tough, like most military personnel that also often carry 100 lbs + in gear in large combat rucks like the excellent British PLCE Bergens ( with the cool feature of being able to zip the 10 liter side pouches together for an assault pack, which is how I would adjust the way I pack my kit in that ruck, with essential assault gear in the side pouches ), plus their weapons, chest rigs, tac vests, plate carriers, whatever they wear. If my 47 year old ass can do it ( with life-long chronic pain because of a fucked up knee ) they should be able to. Cool screen name BTW, a Viking psycho zombie that is indestructible. Now that's a killing machine ;)

    @WetWiIIy Před 4 lety +1

    I'll just say, I've liked your focus on arguably "old school" ALICE kit. It seems effective and it looks aesthetically pleasing to boot! However, have you ever considered putting a modern battle belt through the LC-2 belt to assist in padding it out and to allow you to securely attach MOLLE pouches? For that matter, could you not use a surplus FLC vest under the plate carrier in lieu of what you've done? It's basically what the U.S. Army started replacing ALICE with, but I have no idea how comfortable it would work here.

    • @doitriteak
      @doitriteak  Před 4 lety +1

      MOLLE hinders your ability to stack pouches like ALICE. There is only so many slots. Plus MOLLE is more expensive and velcro based.

    • @WetWiIIy
      @WetWiIIy Před 4 lety

      @@doitriteak Okay gotcha. So what would you say you are primarily setting out to accomplish with this specific configuration? I'm honestly curious, because I don't see anyone on CZcams doing the same distinctive kit loadouts as on your channel. U.S. ALICE surplus is next to none in regards to affordability, but I wouldn't go as far to say it's objectively as good as a lot of modern standard kit, even if personally I wish it were so. Specifically I think the enduring LC-2 magazine pouches, which although very affordable and iconic, are quite clumsy with regards to retention (if you've cut out the separation straps like most people did); you really have to make sure a mag doesn't fall out, and honestly the clip design is archaic. I do think they make fine multipurpose pouches though indeed.
      I'd be curious if you'd ever try the same setup with a couple surplus MOLLE 2 mag pouches. The woodland ones with the snap closure, not the Velcro ones (essentially the same pouches from the LBV 88 vest). You can easily find them for like $5, same as the LC-2s, if affordability is such a concern. It's cool seeing somebody vouching for a return to maneuverable fighting setups incorporating body armor, rather than just plate carriers with all the ammo clumped all on the front. I'm no soldier, but it seems like the status quo these days is detrimental.

  • @rileyharville8379
    @rileyharville8379 Před 4 lety +4

    I actually have the same setup, with the exact same plate carrier ironically. However I feel torn, yes the belt distributes weight better. But I I feel like having everything mounted on your plate carrier is less awkward when running around. The belt just gets in the way more, especially in urban ops. I live in the city and going in and out of buildings the horizontal bulk of a belt seems to get in the way. I would like to hear your opinion on this

    • @doitriteak
      @doitriteak  Před 4 lety

      Hmmm. If you shove all the pouches to the rear and open the front for your legs you will have no issues. Also having SAW pouches over a fat buttpack makes a big difference. I'm very low profile here with this setup.

    • @draugaman2332
      @draugaman2332 Před 4 lety +2

      Tailor your load to the mission. If I was going on a breach, I would take nothing but fighting gear. Typically, I'd run rifle mags on the PC, and nothing but a pistol, 2 pistol mags and an immediate reload rifle mag on the belt, along with a blowout kit.
      IMO this is more of a patrol setup with the additional sustainment gear.

    • @rileyharville8379
      @rileyharville8379 Před 4 lety +2

      @@draugaman2332 I was running all my sustainment gear in a day pack. However having the weight of the pack plus the plate carrier kills your shoulders. I've realized that for long patrols any weight you can get off your shoulders and on to your hips is welcome. That's the reason rucksacks have hip belts.

    • @draugaman2332
      @draugaman2332 Před 4 lety

      @@rileyharville8379 Right, and for most 24-hour or so patrols, you can usually get away with no pack at all. In my old fart days, we would even use packs with proper hip belts for long patrols, and put the web gear over the pack itself on marches, and put it on, and leave everything but the essentials back at the RP with the main rucks.

  • @REDTK421BLACK
    @REDTK421BLACK Před 4 lety

    While I agree with the concept, the method could do with a touch of tweaking. No issues with the belt kit (the 58 style ‘kidney’ pouches I find more useful than a buttpack) but the yoke (suspenders) could be a lot more slimmed down. I would suggest some form of under-armour yoke (Karrimor do a version, as do JayJays of Brecon but the postage may be a pain) or one of Ranger Rick’s cross strap contraptions if wearing the setup under a PC. Unless you’re planning on assaulting any buildings, in which I would wear the harness on the outside and drop the belt kit at the door.

    • @doitriteak
      @doitriteak  Před 4 lety +2

      Slimming it down is going to have diminishing returns for you as you add weight. The lighter the better. I'm back to the ALICE LBE Y harness.

    I know this is an old video, but do you think you could do the same with a Gen 4 IOTV? Trying to minimize my plate carrier usage as I’m a SAW gunner and I like to distribute my weight more on my battle belt with the H Harness suspenders.

    • @doitriteak
      @doitriteak  Před rokem +1

      I'd say run 2 saw pouches on each side and then put your IFAK at the very back of your belt. Arrange your SAW pouches so you are able to touch your belt buckle on the ground. My recent video on my hybrid system may illustrate that better. Then you can just have your water on your IOTV. If you can, I would go on EBAY and look for the British multicam yoke. They distribute weight so much better since they have 6 points of contact.

      +Naplesyrup Coleman's Surplus, Ranger Joe's, Major Surplus and Survival ( and some more, which I will post here as an edit when I remember ) all give physical catalogs ( which I personally like to have to peruse, in addition to websites ) upon request when you visit the websites. If you want good, quality belt and harness systems the Russian Smersh and SSO/SPOSN are the best and most versatile with a lot more real estate than U.S. and most NATO belt and harness systems. Several Russian vendors, such as Grey Shop.RU sell them and the various mag and utility pouches, as well as the pair of small knapsacks/haversacks that have a good amount of MOLLE front, back, and sides on them to attach additional pouches and gear.
      Many of the mag and utility pouches also have MOLLE on the fronts and sides, which adds a lot of versatility, allowing you to attach double 30 round, single compartment ( 2 MOLLE loops wide each ) AK mag pouches to other pouches, including AK mag pouches of the same type, and pouches for the big PKM machine gun pouches ( which have more loops of MOLLE and can carry more than 6 AK 30s in the pouches themselves, as they are made for the big, 200 + round boxes of belted ammo for the large 7.62x54mm Russian caliber rounds ). Check Grey Shop.RU and other Russian mil surplus vendors and see how great those belt, harness, and mags/utility pouches of many kinds are. Whatever type of rifles and pistols you want to set them up for, they are high quality and high versatility systems which I highly recommend.
