  • On September 12 & 13, 2015, the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum hosted their 5th annual Railfest event. The main attraction was Southern 2-8-2 #4501, which pulled two 21st Century Steam excursions each day along the Norfolk Southern line from TVRM's depot in Chattanooga to Bradley Yard in Cleveland, Tennessee.

I was right next to you at the crossing on Pine Hill road below Mcdonald , TN. This was probably the money shot of the entire series of trips in my opinion. That runby was simply epic and the curve just added to the drama. This is a favorite morning spot for me and has been for years. I try to keep the brush and trees at bay. Another good spot is between here and Ooltewah at a nice reverse curve at Dead Mans Curve , just off Lee Hwy. The shot is looking down on the curve and has been another favorite of mine for years. It took many hours to groom this spot with only a weed whip and bow saw. It has gotten away from me over the past year or so and is today a jungle. You will soon be able to see this and other of my train vids on jessestrainsandthings. Great vid by the way !

How far could the 4501 go on a tender full of coal and water before she had to stop and be serviced?

It depends on the gradient of the line and the weight of the train but based on what I've seen TVRM seems to run it about 50 miles between water stops and maybe a little over 100 on one load of coal.

Something funny at the 8:32 mark. A guys shirt gets snagged on the light on the crossing arm and it makes him stumble as it tries to lift him up. You have to look closely as right after it happens the video goes to the next scene.

Was the 630 able to run this year at the Railfest?

+HD35martin Unfortunately no, the 630 was undergoing maintenance. 1829 handled the local all weekend. Hopefully we'll get to see both under steam next year!
