  • [S09 Ep18] Get an inside look at one of the most famous buildings in the world as Marilyn Forbes gets a private tour of Frank Lloyd Wright's masterpiece Fallingwater. Reservations and more information can be found at: fallingwater.org/
    Fallingwater is a house designed in 1935 by renowned American architect Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) for the Kaufmann family, owners of Pittsburgh’s largest department store. Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater is one of his most widely acclaimed works and best exemplifies his philosophy of organic architecture: the harmonious union of art and nature.
    Fallingwater is located in the mountains of Southwestern Pennsylvania, also known as the Laurel Highlands, in Mill Run, Fayette County, which is about 70 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. Wright designed Fallingwater to rise above the waterfall over which it is built. Local craftsmen quarried native sandstone and other materials from the property and completed the construction of the main house, guest house and service wing in 1939.
    The Kaufmann family-Edgar J. Kaufmann, Sr. (1885-1955), Liliane S. Kaufmann (1889-1952), and their son, Edgar Kaufmann jr. (1910-1989)-used Fallingwater as a vacation house during their lifetimes. In 1963, Edgar Kaufmann jr. donated and entrusted Fallingwater and the surrounding 469 acres of natural land to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy., a nonprofit conservation organization established in 1932.
    Fallingwater is owned and operated by the Conservancy and open to the public to tour as a museum. Fallingwater is surrounded by 5,100 acres of natural land, streams and trails known as the Bear Run Nature Reserve. On July 10, 2019, UNESCO inscribed Fallingwater and seven other Frank Lloyd Wright-designed buildings to the World Heritage List. In addition, Fallingwater is designated as a National Historic Landmark and Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Treasure, and named the “best all-time work of American architecture” in a poll of members of the American Institute of Architects. Since the first public tours began in 1964, Fallingwater has welcomed more than six million visitors from across the globe. Travel+Leisure Magazine stated that Fallingwater is "one of the 12 landmarks that will change the way you see the world."
    Fallingwater is the only major Wright work to come into the public domain with its setting, artwork and original Wright-designed furnishings intact.

    if I had grown up as a child in that house, WHAT an adventure it would be to explore the forest and the stream area under and around the house...as well as the house itself! What a glorious home, one of the most unique and special in all the world. FLW changed the face of architecture forever!

      Well I didn't grow up in that house but I grew up in that area. Just up the road from this house is Ohiopyle state park and Wright's other house, Kentuck Knob. I was really lucky to grow up there. The Laurel Highlands overall is a gorgeous area full of waterfalls, forests, hiking trails, mountains, and rolling farmland.

    Like most people I suppose, I've appreciated Falling Water based on the limited images and descriptions found in books and magazines, all of which seem to show the same few angles of the house and property. This tour has exceeded all of those and in every way. This was so well done, such an intimate, casual, and fun look around I almost feel as if I had been there myself. Thank you both, you've served Falling Water well. I believe, if I'm not mistaken, that Falling Water herself was having a good time of it.

      The rest of the tour is incredible too. The guest house, the bedrooms, the pool, the garage, all of it is awesome. We're so so thankful we were able to see and record what they were willing to share with us. Normal tours don't allow photos inside at all. And, of course, they were wise to leave some mystery there so people will need to come to take the whole tour themselves. Haha. Hope you get a chance to visit it someday!

    The reason the “kitchen” looks plain is because he didn’t call them kitchens. He called them workrooms. They were simple and very functional

    Truly, I enjoy so much of F.L.W. work, but somehow I can't get over the fact that he built the house on the actual stone out crop where the family picniced for years. Well, now that our favorite spot is ruined, where will we go?

  • @fairamir1
    @fairamir1 Před 13 dny +1

    What is the red object left of the fireplace ?

    • @ArmstrongNeighborhoodChannel
      @ArmstrongNeighborhoodChannel  Před 12 dny

      I don't know the exact name of it, but it's a big soup kettle pot type thing that can swing out over the fire to cook right there on the fireplace. It's been a while since I've taken an actual tour, but I know they talk about it during the tour and I've seen it pulled out over too. Kauffmans used it for soups and stews and even hot beverages if I'm not mistaken. (At least I know that's what I'd use it for! Haha.)

  • @flipperssuperawesomechanne7090

    You are constantly repeating to appreciate the house you have to come here and see it. It's like you don't want to give much information about the house because you lead people to believe that you will tell them when they come. I wanted to see the house and it was nice to look in but compared to other podcasts on Wright's homes I learned very little from this tour.

      Yes, this episode is not a sample of the tour one would receive when visiting. Neither persons on this episode are daily tour guides. Marilyn is the host of this show and is being shown around the grounds, Ashley is the Senior Director and Curator of Education and was very kind to give us this tour on a day the facility was closed to the public. You are fortunate to have been there, it is a magical place.
