  • Today we're talking about the one rule all filmmakers must know.
This is a cinematography 101 basics that all filmmakers and cinematographers need to know.
Whether you follow that rule, or you decide to break it is up to you!
But it's something that we've learned a long time ago to help us elevate our images and make them more cinematic.
Over the years, we've developed a system that works for us to help us create cinematic images. There is a framework that we follow to help simplify our shoots. We will be covering these topics over the next few weeks.

This was so helpful in terms of entering a set and deciding where to shoot. Especially when sandwiching the talent with light. Thanks.

Yep so important! I talked about this on my video as well. The 3 tips: Shoot on the shadow side, 180 degree rule for your camera as well as catchlights! Def helped me so much!

A joy to watch. Even the rule breaking shots were very pleasing. Nicely colored as well.

Remember people, practice, practice, and studying. Also, the point is the depth of field. To keep your footage from looking flat,no matter what you are shooting with. Do not get caught up in your camera but in lighting, and telling a good story.

I haven't been feeling satisfied with how most of my shots look, I feel like there's always something missing and that they look basic. Now I've found your channel and already have 10 open tabs to watch! Thank you!

Other film terms you may hear on set when referring to "Shadow Side" = "Up Stage Lighting" and "Smart Side Lighting". Just to give everyone a heads up when being on various sets and you might hear these terms.

As our Portrait Lighting colleagues would say - Short Lighting .... Always the first step in creating a 'cinematic' look and feel (except when it's not of course...)

Great video! This aspect of filmmaking is overlooked often. I’m glad that you also showed the alternative, for the times when you can’t do a far side key, and how to make it work. You guys are really good at what you do. Keep going!

One thing I'm struggling is with white balance and mixing different temperatures. Overall I tend to shoot in 5600K, and use 5600K lights, and maybe add some blue rgb... Anyway I'm just saying this in case you want to add some of this info for another video. Keep it going!

Love it man, Only thing to add is many times shooting from the shadow side does not always work with Models and or with clothing brands unfortunately. Sure for Cinema films or spots where the clothing or the models are not that "important" it makes sense, But many times it does not look so flattering with many models unless you have ratios that fill the "shadow" side in quite bit..... Thanks for another great video..

    • @TenfoldProduction
      @TenfoldProduction  Před 7 měsíci +1

Absolutely, these things are always situational and thanks for bringing that point up 👏 fashion projects are definitely one that leans to less of a harsh ratio.

I love your videos man, and I watch every single one of them. Thanks for making them.
I have a question though, please how do you scribble on your videos? What software do you use or what’s the setup? I have been trying hard to figure it out for my own CZcams videos. Would appreciate a tip or two from you if that’s okay? Thanks mate.

We use a combination of photoshop (you can drag videos into it and write on top) and obs to record the screen. We the crop in post to make it full screen. Hope this helps!
