  • In this video we're trying out another tune from Gary Numan. We're certainly enjoying Gary's eclectic musical style and we can't wait to get into this one. Enjoy!

"There are still people trying to work out what a genius Gary Numan is"
    -- Prince

  • @thelwulfeoforlic6482

The song was written about an affair Numan had with a girl, Deb, who tried to sell her story to the papers (at a time when the press was trying to destroy him), hence “We Take MYSTERY To Bed”
    “Confiscate letters like D.E.B.
No natural course of things for her to expect
Withdraw the feelings 'You can, you can't'
I called your number as you told the world
    Something is wrong
    Something is wrong
I'll find the answer, you'll take mystery to bed
My sister coma she was always too shy
You told the story crying 'darling too good to last'
You taste of love just like the sex smell of me
    Someone is wrong
    Someone is wrong
There is no longer any normal to me
You're my assassin but you can't see the crime
Pointless possessions of me and you and greed
I looked at you mistaking needles for eyes
    Somebody's gone
    Somebody's gone”

Numan started wearing a fedoras whilst waiting for his hair transplant to take! And started to mumble after being savaged by the Music Press

Your next Numan song should be, “We have a Technical”. Great song! I won’t steer you wrong 🙂. I’m a long time Numan fan (since 1979) and I’ve talked with Gary a few times before and after his concerts. He really is a great guy. Very short but powerful. His 1980 tour (called Teletour named after his album at the time Telekon) was the absolute best concert I have ever been to. The stage show was awesome! He’s a genius

Hey guys. You are correct, Prince did actually name Gary as an influence to him. As for his shyness, that was more to do with his (later in life) diagnosis of Asperger’s Syndrome.

the look came from a time in the late seventies , from memory gary was in the london underground with a friend and were heading through some of the underground network tunnels , they were behind a man in a long coat, grey hat, smoking a cigarette ( are friends ) and they rounded a corner and he was gone and it was a dead end ) , so that plus Gary's admiration for the style of frank sinatra , created the Dance and I assasin style

You are so right about the vocals gary had lots of criticism from the music press especially about his voice and also his music it stopped him singing like he did on cars and are friends electric etc. The it eventually sent him down a path of faux disco type music and he lost his way for a few years. But he came back in the late 90,s with an album called sacrifice. Please try I die you die next or we are glass if you can😊

I'm pretty sure Prince did mention being influenced by Numan, as well as many other artists, in the past. As a lifelong Numanoid I'd buy anything by him back in the day. And though I did buy this I wasn't over enthusiastic about it. Strangely though as the years have flown by this track in-particular has really grown on me. Good to see such a great reaction some forty years on.

Gary was convinced that his voice was a weakness and so, as you've noted here, he tended to mix it down - thus it sounds muffled. He did this for many, many years, until finally he met with his current producer, Ade Fenton, who convinced him that his voice was actually one of his amazing STRENGTHS and is why so many of his "Numanoid" fans have hung around for 40 years. So, fearfully, Gary allowed Ade to mix his vocals UP on the last four albums and they are *AMAZING*. Prolly the best example of this is his latest single, "Saints And Liars", which I recommend you review.

Many of the punk rockers wore trench coats. Numan was wearing them since 78 in some old pictures whether he had one on an album cover or not.

Hi guys, loving your honest reviews 👍 If you want to hear Gary Numan "unplugged" Have a listen to the song The
1930's Rust" It's from the same album as this track."No synths"😮 Harmonica, saxophone, drums and Gary of course 😅😅😅😅.

Nice to see you two having fun with that song 😊 I've had an extended version on a Gary Numan compilation album since the mid 90's, and it's always been one of my favourites of his, too. This album version isn't all that different to what I'm used to, though 🙂
Pino Palladino is on fretless bass. And apparently Chris Slade played the drums! The same guy who'd replaced Phil Rudd in AC/DC for a while and who can be seen in their 'Thunderstruck' video clip 😀 Gary himself played all the keys and the guitar.
Interesting how you picked up on the Prince similarities! 😀 Gary himself definitely must've been influenced by bands like Japan! Their bassist Mick Karn also had played on one of his albums, including saxophone. I still have no idea myself after nearly 30 years what ol' Gazza is singing in this here song! 😅

During the Dance sessions if Gary was stuck for an idea, he'd retreat to his car and listen to GTP by Japan (as told to me by someone who played on the album).

In case no-one's mentioned it, you made a wrong choice here. Only the 12" extended version has all the lyrics intact and in the correct order. The album version may be shorter but because of those missing vocals it feels over-extended and over-repetitive.
The odd thing is, in the days when he played it live he only used the album arrangement, but he did compensate by using it as the framing song for a jazzy-funky bass solo (mainly when either Joe Hubbard or Nick Davies were in the band).

This was Gary doing his version of funk. The whole album has a funky feel. Gary was one of the first to use the fretless bass on his album (Pino Palladino played bass for Gary and then Paul Young) Totally different to Cars wasn't it.

Your use of the word "mumbling" is something that has been said about him before. There is a track by M83 called Skin Of The Night that sounds like it was a track from Berserker, Synths, guitar, and drums are the same. The vocalist is doing a similar low and mumbled voice while a female singer is up high and clear.
