I've been a big Gary Numan fan since the late 70's, and his music gets better as the years go on. He freely admits he has had a couple of facelifts but it is subtle, he still looks the same. And his voice is so distinctive.

You have missed his whole evolution...from Sacrifice, Pure, Exile, Jagged on to his new one about to be released, he has only gotten better and darker.

Love Gary Numan, still great after all these years. Also a hero in my other passion for aviation, he piloted a Piper around the world and was also an aerobatics pilot and instructor on the British Airshow scene. Clever chap.

You should have let the autoplay continue. It was loading a live concert, where he brings his daughter Persia on stage for her to sing her part in this song and it is so cute. She brings a note sheet because she is afraid to forget her lines. And Gary, being this goth idol breaks character, because he is just so damn proud. Incidentally, this is only Gary Numan song I know. I stumbled on it when it was released (is that really 3-4 years already) an listened to it for a month without even needing to listen to any more of his song. It's a great song, but has a strange structure where it basically starts over halfway through.

I saw Gary open for Nine Inch Nails many years ago and I didn't know who he was until they played 'Cars'. I had heard the song before, but knew nothing else about it. His performance blew me away and I have been a fan ever since. I saw him in a video series called 'What's in my bag' or something. The premise was that artists would go to a record store, pick out several albums, and then explain why they chose them. One of his albums was Nine Inch Nails. When he explained why he picked it, he opened up about some hard times he was going through and about how he had hit a 'creative wall' and that NIN (and Trent Reznor) gave him the creative spark he needed. Very humble and cool guy. You have some cool patrons if they are requesting his stuff =)

It's amazing how NIN's Trent Reznor speaks to how much of an influence Gary Numan was on his aesthetic.

      @StephanisRail Před 2 lety +1

Gary has also credited Depeche Mode for helping him find his newer sound as well as helping him through some really dark times. Could you imagine a DM, NIN and Gary tour?!

FYI the video was shot on the 16th & 17th of june 2017 near 29 Palms, California in 118F/48C heat
2:17 we get the opening panorama of Joshua Tree desert with "snow" & mountains i can't locate
3:21 & 3:40 Gary is walking (west?) along a deeply rutted dust path , (pole or pipe, line road ? )
4:41 & 6:21 the 25 X 15 foot building was on a 1400 foot across ice age rock debris mound west of Amboy Rd
at 34.1947345,-115.7280922 & from this vantage point some drone shots were done looking E/SE & W/NW

One reason alot of Gary's fans hadn't heard or realized that he was still making music is because radio stations don't play his stuff but just all the modern crap.I have owned his original stuff for years but actually found his new albums on Amazon and bought most of them.I first heard Gary in a record store but today, there are few of those left.I loved spending time in the local record store just hearing bands for the first time. That era is lost now.

I love this song. This is right up my alley too. I should have been following his career . I was an 80's girl and loved "In cars" This sound is badass. And his daughter has a great future ahead of her too. I love to see father and daughter working together. Great song. Great sound.

Much of Gary's newest sound is down to his producer Ade Fenton. The latter put out an album a few years back and had Gary contribute vocals. This video, "Healing", is the highlight of that album - very, very dystopian. Y'all should do a video on this one :)

Scary when loud. I' a metal fan for 40 years or so BUT like Tubeway Army. Didn't tell my friends - would have been ridiculed. At University I had a friend lover (80s university Manchester everyone liked everyone). Tracey had 3 tickets to see him signed by Paul Gadd - we had no seats but her dad worked with the keyboard player of the backing band. HOW ZEN IS THAT!! now it seems insane
With bands of the time - Numan and Kershaw and "look mama" (in my top 5 Jones tracks) THEY WERE the 80s for me (in addition to metal)_ and bizarrely Cliff Richard (no idea - for psychologists in future life)

Nice - think I actually saw this when it came out, rahter than discovering it 10 years after everyone else, which is my usual way.
Random link, but the white cross on the girl's face reminded me of the same idea used by Skin in this aboslute banger from Skunk Anansie:
    czcams.com/video/Nc0zDfH1jog/video.html
The song was used in the movie Strange Days, which is why the video is a mix of movie clips and performance footage.

I was 16 years old in '79 when I discovered his album Replicas. I think that album, along with The Pleasure Principal are within the top 10 synth/rock records released between '78-'90. Groundbreaking and very unique. I still listen to them regularly. However, his album Telekon was a bit of a letdown and the quality of his music after that took a severe nosedive. A few good songs here and there up until about '84 but everything after that is pure crap. My opinion is that he "had his time" and became wildly obsessed with Trent Reznor...to his detriment.
