There is a big difference between no coin runs and no ring runs.
In Mario, coins are just a bonus.
In Sonic, rings are a gameplay mechanic.
Also, the Studiopolis Act 1 boss should be the end of the run even if you did get past Chemical Plant. I don't need to explain.
In mario powerups are your health bar but in sonic, rings are your health bar

You have to get extremely lucky to beat the studiopolis boss
You can actually skip the transition bits on the Studiopolis Act 1 boss if you jump in just the right way. Not sure if you can skip ALL of them though...

Sadly, no mainline 2d sonic game is probably possible without collecting any rings. I dont plan on trying any other ringless challenges in 2d sonic games, but I have some other ideas planned.
Using debug mode is cheating. I cant just use debug mode to skip rings. If I allowed that I might as well go into the level select and just skip to the last level as well.

The thing about this video is that, although it wasn't possible, it was interesting to watch and learn about how you tackled this challenge. I don't watch because I want it to be possible, I watch because I want to see the process it takes to try. I've seen videos that tell me that it's possible but in an uninteresting way. Great video.

@Kienan_Gamer117 For me it was also act 2, but there's a part close to the end with moving platforms just above the water. I always got stuck there
I was actually really satisfied with the result.. there’s something about it being impossible that leaves me more satisfied than all the Mario vids where they manage. Sonic rings are just everywhere in most of his games and this was a treat to watch
In the other games, the Debug mode cheat reveals how loops really work. You don't have to run around the loop, you have to pass a threshold near the top of the loop to switch the colision of the loop that you're on. Now im not sure if this works on Mania, or if the ring hitbox is too big to let you reach it, but it's worth looking into if you haven't already.

They started years ago, there are rom hacks where you die for collecting a ring, or you can go a certain direction or use an ability etc... This shit bene going for a long time

The hard boiled heavy boss fight in studiopolis makes you automatically pick up 3 rings partway through the fight, it would've been impossible to avoid those too...
Since it is technically like a cutscene, should we not count them or can you actually jump over them?

I thought you'd be able to make it a lot further, knowing that there are a ton of routes you can take. I think we're all just as surprised that it ended so early. But you put a lot of work into this! That whole elaborate character swap is where I would have definitely drawn the line

I don’t know if this helps, but loops leading down in sonic mania work weird cause at a certain point in the loop it counts as going through the loop letting you go down. If your lucky the point is where the rings aren’t. Also I know this because I try to find tons of special stages and a lot of them are near loops so this happens to me a lot. Great vid by the way

Have you tried to position yourself here and do the glitch? have you tried a 2nd controller to position ray far away so he can teleport to you and trigger the glitch? Also the ceiling right here looks high enough so Tails can fly above it, why not try this and do the glitch on the other side?

there's even a sonic 3d game (i think adventure 1) where you can do this.

Step 1: beat the game and then you unlock debug mode
Step 2: go on game options and activate debug mode
Step 3: start a new game
Step 4: in any level activate the debug menu and fly to the end of the stage
If you followed the steps correctly you have beaten sonic mania without collecting a ring

I immediately thought "no" because you're forced to collect 3 of them as you go to the second phase of the Hydrocity Act 2 boss (the washing machine)... although I've seen at least one person who somehow forced himself to the right of the tube and miss them (and get a game over as a result a minute later!) so maybe it's possible.

You could use *DEBUG MODE* and skip the loop... heck, you could summon the goal post at the beginning of each stage and skip the stage. Sure it’s cheating but *it technically is possible to beat Sonic Mania without collecting rings.*

Hey BillehBawb, if you use tails in chemical plant act 1, you can get past the three rings on the higher path. keep moving slightly right until you can fly upwards and over it. Also, when you get to a loop you can fly as tails and touch in between the top ring and the closest on the left to continue. This is because it thinks you touched the advanced layer, so you can continue.

Actually, it might be possible to beat Chemical plant 2. Let me explain. Basically in sonic games (including sonic mania) there is a foreground and action layer. These are usually used around loops. If as tails, you hit the foreground layer trigger, WITHOUT getting the rings while flying, you can just fly around the loop

It's normal that when you restart, they give you back the characters you had at the beginning. If they didn't do that, it could be abused to get a full party of 5 by collecting a character and restarting over and over again.

Without watching the video, i can tell you right now, it's impossible. I doubt you can get pass Chemical Plant.
In Mario games, coins are avoidable cause they are there for points and extra lives in Sonic they double as your life bar so i think they're placed in some stages to be basically unavoidable... unless you use debug mode to skip specific parts.

In all seriousness, I actually made a jump in CPZ1 a few times. You just have to fly under the roof, and the moment Tails begins descending, move right. It'll take a few tries, but it works.

I dont think you can get very far in any sonic game without collecting any rings. Most force you to collect rings at multiple points.

Chemical plant two in mania mode could be possible as the foreground background thing triggered anywhere. Just get tails to fly at the top middle of the loop and it should send him into thr background.

Just use the layer triggers in the loops - I'm fairly sure the layer triggers stretch over the entire radius of the loop.
