      It was a problem created by too many egos. For too long school faculty would assault, harass, fail as educators. The problem went on for too long with the educators pointing the finger at parents and students. School faculty would not take responsibility for their actions so they were forced to take responsibility. This did not fix the problem because one of the problems was always criminal minded faculty keeping their mouths shut, making sure the abused students were made out as thugs so no one would believe them, and the people who were supposed to be there for checks and balances not doing their job.

  • @grantcritchfieldstexastrai7072

    True story: for about eight years during my teaching career ONE of my "second" jobs was a seasonal park ranger at a federally owned lake for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. That included citation authority to write tickets for various park violations and even the authority to remove problem people from the property if necessary. That meant that my citations and decisions were going to and be addressed and accepted in Federal Court. However, I was never able to get discipline referrals for unruly students to be accepted by my HS admin.. In their eyes, the problem kids were ALWAYS in the right & I was never justified in my actions for even major classroom issues. I learned to just lay low & just deal with whatever happened. Kind of a morale extinguisher to accelerate teacher burnout.

      @grantcritchfieldstexastrai7072 Před 2 lety +4

      @@TrueHelpTV Nope, not me or any other COE people. All fish & game laws are enforced by state game wardens. The COE has no authority over game laws. All the COE rules involve personal safety or park property issues. About the only thing I ever wrote tickets for violating park rules (& then after REPEATED verbal warnings) like jumping off dangerous cliff, glass on the beach, large dogs running loose through crowded parks, & other "hard hitting" violations like that. I would much rather get voluntary compliance so people would have to have had at least three warnings before elevating it to a written ticket. And then be complete jerks that absolutely refused to just go along and be just cool. In the case of drunks, fights, mean or unruly individuals or groups, I generally called the local sheriff's deputies that also patrolled the lakes to deal with that. Those offenses generally involved criminal offenses that the deputies were more than happy to handle. Most of my time was spent in customer service types of activities, recovering drowning victims (usually several each summer season), towing boats from the lake after mechanical failures, and such. Definitely not on a power trip. That would have involved more paperwork that I didn't want to do. I got enough paperwork during the school year to last through the summer.

      @grantcritchfieldstexastrai7072 Před 2 lety +8

      @@GaryLiseo No, or not in the practical sense. I taught in public school for 26 years & another 8 in a private setting. During that time I quit education twice (out of utter frustration) & retired once. I loved the actual teaching & the students. It was the ADULTS in charge I couldn't deal with. They took all of the fun out of my classroom and thusly put out my fire that wanted to be there.
      I love sharing my passion of science and nature & have it my mission to have people out to my property in central Texas to share my passion with anyone that wants to visit. I have had several college level groups (Texas A&M, Baylor, Steven F. Austin, & Texas State) and a few other groups out to conduct field work but I'm trying to set up visits from public school groups. I have a CZcams channel that show some of the animal interactions collected from my trail cameras but I want to see people get "boots on the ground". Videos are nice but to truly experience and develop a passion for nature and the related sciences, one must get into the field. You have to be able to see it, feel it, smell it, hear it and experience it in a way that sadly most people in today's world don't get a chance to experience. I'm blessed to have upland, wetland, riparian habitats as well as caves and karst geology features so it's a very diverse area.
      I'm sure I gave you more information that you wanted but it wasn't a simple "yes/no" question as you intended. I guess I'm still teaching but with my own rules and minus a paycheck.....and no useless time wasting PD.

    I started teaching (straight out of one of my state's best prep programs) in January. I've already turned in my resignation and am not even sure if I'll be finishing the semester. I have a full lab, class sizes in the low 20's, and a decent ratio of interested students, but even that isn't enough. I don't care how much they pay me at this point, it isn't sustainable. To operate and teach technology classes, you need time to prep the lab, design and modify lessons, create online resources, perform required accommodations, etc. There aren't enough hours in the day to do that for 3 classes after dealing with the students for 8 hours. It just isn't possible unless you give up everything else, have a spouse that can handle daily tasks, or have been teaching the same thing for years (which just isn't an option in a good technology class). I'm sad to say it, but the spark is gone and I'm looking elsewhere. Hopefully I'll find a place in a community college or library Makerspace where you don't teach curriculums, but instead assist in the learning process directly.

      @@lisadiconti Thanks! I had some level of expectation going in (at least after I learned more in my final year of college) but I didn't think it would be this bad in even some of the best situations. I really hope that schools start considering doubling up teachers more often. One of my old schools had 2 teachers teach 4 periods (each teacher was officially in charge of 2 and planned/assisted in the other 2, so neither had full workloads). It's the only way I see this working for more involved subjects like technology.
      Still sad though. It's going to be hard for a few of the students. Even if I'm barely surviving I still make an OK teacher from there perspective it seems, and I definitely know my stuff. I don't know what it'll take to change this, but I hope it happens soon.

      I had a head principal that didn't discipline students who got into a fight. They were at school the next day like they had done nothing wrong. Yet, he allegedly wrote up 28 teachers (over half of the teachers) during his first year on the job. He also wrote up a teacher because her son got sick while at school and had to go pick him up from the elementary school, but instead of informing him about it, she informed an Assistant Principal. Apparently that was not good enough. He also prohibited the assistant principals from doing discipline. A seemingly power hungry individual.

    Anyone who really enjoys teaching (especially teaching students who are interested in learning,) if you can move far away, look into private schools in other countries. Don't blindly accept a job at one, do your research because some private schools are just as bad, but there are many AMAZING teaching opportunities in countries that are not the US of A (and for the most part, stay away from public schools in other countries as well.)

    Tried teaching part time nearly 30 years ago- unprapared students and absent parents were a problem even then. But, as far as summer vacation goes, could always work in the summer and be paid additional income. Always short on staff in the summer. Same was true when my mom & her husband worked for the school district. 3 months off is a long vacation, alternately you can work it & still get at least a month. Plus Easter, Christmas, Thanksgiving,etc. You get the point.

I do appreciate the teachers and how nice they are I just dislike the office ladies and school district…👎🏼 I don’t like yelling at teachers because I know they have so much to do and they are trying their best. But just like hospitals the system is broken even if we change the people in it maybe we need actually parents and grandparents on the board who actually care. Haha
