Here it is. One of my favorite comments ever.
STOP IT 😄
FYI - sitting here still trying to smooth out Red Haired Boy in F# 🥴
Michael Daves would destroy in this game.
A truly incredible game. Why isn't this part of normal guitar contests? haha
Andy crushing St. Anne's Reel in Bb after Mickey struggled to play it in B was amazing lmao
I want a do-over!
I knew Andy was good, but *damn* I need to practice.
I think you all 4 did incredible actually. This would be hard!!
I want to see you try this Libby!
@@MickeyAbraham2022 Oh, no you don't 🥹
Old guy at a circle at Bean Blossom back in the day said when I forgot my capo at the tent: Trying to play bluegrass without a capo is like drive a car without a steering wheel" 😊🤣
Wise words
I’m ready for one string fiddle tune comp all at the neck using only D demented.
This is the third or fourth Marcel video I’ve watched today. Good entertainment, great playing and Marcel is a great teacher. Thanks for sharing with us.
Andy is very good!
You should eliminate g, c, and d, just to spice it up even more
Andy's confidence is totally amazing... they all are ...
every single time andy played it sounded beautiful
I'm definitely using this as a practice technique. Nice job!
clearly I need to do it more!
You're not the only one @@MickeyAbraham2022...
Very amusing…and a good self challenge for the ear-fretboard connection!
Holy cow guys! That was not only seriously impressive but I have not giggled/laughed so much at 5am in the morning…ever. This may have been the tipping point for mr to sign up for lessons with The Marcel Mafia of bluegrass.
Great content. I watched the whole thing.
I would LOVE to see a banjo version of this. And that Doc lick that Mickey played in Eb and Bb was gorgeous…
Thank you -- one day I moved the famous Doc C lick to the other string groups
@@MickeyAbraham2022 Yeh, it makes a ton of sense in those other keys. F would be the last good key!
Aaah! Super fun! That's cool! I'll try to do every time with myself students with all melodies
impressive to transcribe all that in mind so fast
Andy just over here flexing 😭
This will separate the skilled from the foolish! Well done!
We used to do something like this in our group trumpet classes at Miami University. The professor would name a tune (usually something easy like Mary Had a Little Lamb or She'll Be Coming 'Round the Mountain) and a key, and we had to be able to play it on the spot. If I recall, sometimes they had us sight read a passage and transpose it to the key of their choosing. It was considered a vital skill for those who wanted to be pro musicians. Super stressful lol, this sounds like a ton of fun though!
This was awesome, and tons of fun to watch.
Need Stash for this :)
Totally
He’d start with the f sharp
I was just thinking that haha
He would choose modes that don't exist in this hemisphere
Loved it and will give it go as well 👍🏻😊
Also, can we get more of Monroe's Hornpipe in F? That sounded really nice, ngl
Love this channel! I’ve learned so much from yall
Thank you, Tyler!
Oh man! Thanks you for this video! 😆
Yes thumbs up!
All did good. Andy crushed it. The question I have is what skill/technique put him ahead of the other.
He knows these melodies better, is a national flatpicking champion (more than once), and he's had more ear training practice in strange keys.
9/10 you only need the keys of G, C, D and a capo to play bluegrass. Having any experience playing in keys like Eb, F#, Ab, etc is a huge advantage. I honestly think the rest of us did incredibly well given the circumstances. None of us knew Andy would be so good at this!
Andy here: 4 semesters of sight-singing and ear training in college. I was a French Horn major, which gives me all the flat keys, and I learned all my piano scales in 8th grade. When you do this game, think of the scale degrees. I.e., this song starts on the 3rd, etc
@@mandohatthat french horn practice really paid off here haha
@@petefeltman all those hours finally meant something. Swing away, Billy.
This is awesome! Amazing concept and amazing pickers!
Hey Christian!
So fun, your best vid in a while, for sure!
glad you enjoyed it! it was painful for me :)
You're golden Mickey, cool personified! On another topic; I am a thumb picker, just getting into bluegrass. Must I embrace a plectrum? I can flat pick ok, just love the thumb pick. I saw an album cover with Norman Blake holding a slot head, and wearing a thumb pick, standing next to Tony Rice. Blake and Rice 2 maybe? Of course I'm not Norman Blake, but is there precedent? Thanks man.@@MickeyAbraham2022
Great stuff.
Yer a wizard Andy!
I would be really bad at this..... I love my capo so much lol
Coolio!
I'm guessing Hank Garland who recorded some fiddle tunes in Nashville
in the 1950s, didn't use a capo. Maybe also Jimmy Bryant.
Well yeah, of course... but Jimmy Bryant and Hank Garland weren't flatpickers. They were country guys and they certainly weren't playing Whiskey Before Breakfast in Ab!
A great vid man here on my wife’s account cuz she got the premium 😂
I want to see this video, but instead of keys it’s modes, and it’s Dorian-Locrian on a d6
