    Nothing compares to the charm of Kingdom Hearts 1. There’s so many small details and cameos. There’s also a very real, ominous feeling of the game. Especially at the end. The End of the World has the most strange and apocalyptic feeling to it. There’s so much unknown in that game, and I just love it.

    • @smugaru
      @smugaru  Před rokem +1

      Exxxactly!! I think it's because the game ramps up really nicely to an exciting finale, but it is still a surprise that it would be so ominous and foreboding, especially for Disney at the time.
      And I still think about a what if, like what if we just got the one game, and were left on that cliffhanger😅

      It really fits with the older more dark Disney movie worlds. Not that the Disney Renaissance period is that old, but I imagine newer Disney movies are a lot tamer than they used to be. Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, and Pinocchio of course being older are even darker. And Nightmare before Christmas of course is appropriately freaky

    First: I love video essays and I love kingdom hearts. I always joke that my favorite genre of video are Kingdom Hearts video essays, but it's true. Thanks for this and please do more! It's such a good niche
    Second: On your story points, I relate with having trouble being able to explain why I think KH1 is better than KH2 or any of the other games (in terms of story mostly.) So this is how I do it:
    KH1 story is better because it's a better isolated story. You don't need to know any outside context like other games or cutscenes or etc to fully understand the plot. Everything is explained nicely, and all elements are introduced at good times. Princesses of heart, heartless, the keyblade, they're all simple concepts and explained nicely. After KH1, most games include references to events outside of the game, name people from other games, and generally require knowledge on other games to fully understand. I mean, take a look at KH2's long ass prologue. I understand this is all a given since KH1 was the first game and they assumed it would be one off but still. The simplicity of the story is very charming and I appreciate that it's a full-on classic "here is your quest, and you finish it" type of story instead of some of the other games bouncing around in terms of the direction.
    As for the gameplay, KH2 is fun and fast but I feel like KH1 has more charm. It's clunky but in a charming way. I've said charming like 5 times but still. I feel like KH1's combat progresses nicely (altho the ability points system is not really explained) and aspects are simple and easy to pick up. While I felt KH2's mechanics were fun, I felt they were kinda dumped on you ( they don't explain the new form system and just say "look new clothes" and you don't really learn what they do and take away).

    • @smugaru
      @smugaru  Před rokem +2

      Mmhmm I agree with a lot of that, KH1 times were just simpler, and the story really reflects that. That's why it still stands out for me, and my crusade to make sure people don't just skip ahead in favor of the flashy KH3 and 4 combat lol.
      Kingdom Hearts 2 for me is the "reliable" or "consistent" one imo. It has a broader appeal because of the increase in speed, the worlds etc, but it also feels somewhat compressed and even a little dense like you said.
      Drive forms are cool, but they are not explained well and leveling them up sorta disrupts the flow of the game.
      Thank you thank youuu soo much for the compliment!! I certainly plan to discuss more Kingdom Hearts stuff in the future💛💛

    The first game is the best given its less automation and more exploration in its worlds. However, I think the saga missed the opportunity to be a pure action game without RPG elements. If it was necessary to raise the statistics instead of the boring and tedious grinding, it would have been by opening chests by exploring the world.

    • @smugaru
      @smugaru  Před měsícem

      That's actually really interesting to think about! And I definitely see what you're getting at. It would make a lot of sense for the type of game I think people might perceive it to be. Certainly, for a Disney game of the time.
      Like, if skills and abilities were gained through plot events, exploring or the collectables, and if things like exp, levels, stats (and thus grinding) were taken out, it would still work honestly lol.
      They have definitely leaned pretty heavy into the action-rpg side now, but I don't hate the thought of KH being more of like an action-adventure.

After replaying The Story So Far collection before KH3 dropped I was every bit as entertained as when I first picked them up years ago. (Maybe more so because of the final mix iterations finally being easily available) KH3 let me down a little bit despite being a fun and polished experience and I attribute that completely to it's predecessors being the masterpieces that they are. @@smugaru Definitely. I think it has to do with certain limitations that had to be thoughtfully worked around to make a unique experience, where as checking all the boxes on a list of financially successful tropes is the default approach for so many franchises now. If you list the best selling or best critically received games from the PS2/Xbox/GameCube era, there is so much more diversity in mechanics and design. It seems like once general consumers became more interested in raw graphics and online components it marked a general decrease of originality in the industry overall. 1:56 All the Ansem Reports you get throughout the game were only the Odd Numbered Reports which showed Ansems good side and then when you get to Hollow Bastion and get the rest from Aerith it reveals his true intentions. The Ansem Reports also has lots of hidden secrets within them that reveal more than even the most dedicated fans realize.
    "All doors need a key to open much like the one I have"
    Implying Ansem always had a Keyblade. I could go on and on but yeah it's a complex story. Even when you get those Reports from Aerith says something along the lines of"The people who fled the castle told stories of Ansem protecting them... But now I see it's just for his evil schemes" Showing that at the very least Ansem had a change of heart or is not who he appears to be. When we then first see Ansem properly he's possessing Rikus body and we're never truly shown his original form. It's very complex but it does give answers which is why it's a much better story than 90% of other videogames stories. It's complex but it makes sense. Which is why saying "complex = bad" is just a bad take every time. Compare Kingdom Hearts to something like Zelda and you'll quickly see why Kingdom Hearts story is truly complex but makes much more sense than Zelda. Literally picking any other videogame and Kingdom Hearts is still not that complicated as the rest especially by today's standards. Ever glimpsed Halo lore? While I do disagree with most people that the story is complicated I cannot say that it is simple. It's just a good story with very clever twists that give emotional gut punch.

  • @Yurikon3
    @Yurikon3 Před rokem +1

    I agree KH series overall story is not that complicated. It is pretty simple for how much stuff there is.
    Personally I think the problem is not story getting bigger but rather losing some of the "vibe" in storytelling the first game had. The first game is like some sort of progerock song with pinch of anime in it.
    Future titles' story got bit too ample to use "tell, don't show" method in storytelling. Simply explaining its themes and concepts instead of just building story around those concepts and vibing through it. Perhaps we might had missed some details, but ride would have been interesting. KH2 still does something right in Roxas' segment and Days somewhat is able to transfer themes of "nothingness" to more mundane situation of daily job. But the further series go the more plastic it seems to get in handling of its concepts. I think it is the more "darker side" of anime-storytelling. There are times when anime-stories become too invested to waste loads of time to explain some unnecessary tidbits of plot which do not need explanation and could rather be left untold for audience to vibe. It a difference between genuine quest-storyline and fetch-quest storyline.
    The whole Xehanort's 13 darks and 7 lights jamboree felt more like some sort of engineering booklet stuff than genuine fairytale or progerock song.

    • @smugaru
      @smugaru  Před rokem

      I can absolutely see what you're getting at, especially that feeling of "tell, don't show".
      It definitely has adopted some of those not-so-great anime tropes.
      That's probably my biggest issues with 3D and KH3. But KH3 especially just felt made to appeal more to the masses (I get that they had to, but still).
      There were lot of instances (mainly in the Disney worlds) where it felt, like you said, as though we were being explained the feelings or themes, rather than having it conveyed through the visual narrative.
      It finally occurred to me another reason why the vibes were sort of off in KH3 game: it didn't have an introductory original world to get settled in and help lead us into the adventure. No Destiny Islands, no Twilight Town, not even Traverse Town. We get a version of dive to the heart, and then immediately are put into a Disney world.

    First game is honestly the best game in the series. It's grounded, has a clear direction, and not convoluted with all the garbage prequel, and sidequel nonsense. I did enjoy the second game, but it's mainly because it wraps up Sora, Riku, and Kairi getting back home. If the first game ended with them all reuniting, I probably wouldn't care for the second game as much.

      @smugaru  Před 2 měsíci

      @de1855 Yeah, the whole story arc revolving around 1-2 is still probably my favorite so far. And it's because KH1 had such a solid story that was easy to understand, grounded like you said, compelling ending, and just feeling so much like an actual Disney crossover event that we would have watched on TV as kids lol.
      KH2 is still good, but it didn't blend the Disney aspect nearly as well and did add in more of the complexities. I mainly enjoy the prologue and final act once they've reunited (and of course, the ending is fantastic)

      Yeah, I can see that with it being one of the final releases from SquareSoft. It definitely has just a nostalgic aura surrounding it.

      @chozochiefxiii3298 Před 6 měsíci

      @smugaru I should have clarified. I meant in terms of content and such. Even in vanilla the ultima weapon quest feels more rewarding, there's like 4 super bosses compared to kh2 or 3 vanilla. One of the bosses is named after a fan/contest winner. It's just some kind of stuff you don't see in games anymore that I wish we did get. It really does feel like those 90s days. The level of interaction in each world in kh 1 as well. There are chests some people still haven't found to this day because of how much is just hidden in different little interactions most players aren't curious enough to find or conditioned to anymore. I agree the main trilogy are still all good games in their own rights I just think 3 could have learned more from kh1 than it did.
