    Hey guys! I'm Alexandra Gater and I show you how to do rental-friendly upgrades and DIY projects on a budget. Today I am transforming a tiny bathroom into a vintage-inspired, dark and moody space. I up-cycle a thrifted vanity and give the walls a lime wash effect, but with regular wall paint!

    For the best results when you want to achieve a lime wash-like finish on walls without using lime wash, you'll want to start with a base coat in a lighter shade of the same color used for your top coat, then mix the top coat 1:1 with a clear satin glaze and apply with whatever tool gives you the visual texture you want. I used the glaze method with a sea sponge to finish my hall bath, layering 3 darker yellows (the darkest being almost ochre) over a pale yellow base to achieve an aged parchment look, and it came out stunning.

      @rtd1791 Před rokem +15

      I was wondering. I’ve never done this just had a vague recollection that your explanation is how it should be done. The desired result is tonal contrast rather than different colors, right?

      @mdeeaonetwothree5162 Před rokem +4

      Well I was thinking that the variation is a bit stark, so I can see how that might work. I was wondering what would happen if you put gold or burnt orange underneath.

    Overall I think this is gorgeous, and major props for being bold and going dark!
    One thing I’d suggest: for the walls I would have done the sponging on top of a base coat of slightly lighter blue… the white showing through looks a bit unfinished to me.
    And the sink is beautiful if it’s mostly a guest bathroom, but man I would hate trying to fit my hands in that tiny thing on a daily basis without splashing water everywhere 😂

    • @jhutch1681
      @jhutch1681 Před rokem +27

      A third coat might have been the solution. And maybe two or three colours might have been more interesting. The large sink spout seems to be completely out of proportion with the small size of the basin. Splish-splash indeed!

    • @rneustel388
      @rneustel388 Před 3 měsíci +3

      I thought the same thing, too, about the size of the sink. Guests probably won’t think about drying the wood top after washing their hands, either. I know it’s sealed, but it just seems like it wasn’t well thought out.

    I’m an occasional professional painter (of illustration not rooms) and have to echo the comments advocating two paints for a lime wash look using regular wall paint. I would suggest identifying the lime wash color you want, finding the closest color in a wall paint brand, and buying two paints: a paint two shades lighter and two shades darker. Paint the darker shade over the entire wall, allow to dry, and then go in with a rag and dry buff on the lighter color, slowly building up as desired. You can always go back over with the darker shade! This way you don’t need to entirely rely on that difficult arm work AND the eye will naturally compensate for the difference in the colors from afar/see the desired tone with added dimensionality. Anyway… I love this makeover ❤️

    • @mortalemily
      @mortalemily Před rokem +3

      The trick to this I think would be using less of the buff color than you think you will need so it can really blend into the existing color

    • @gnarbeljo8980

      As someone with similar background I agree. I'd also rather use a matte emulsion than a regular latex paint. Latex paintd attract dust (static) and have a plastic feel. Emulsions come in many varieties and arent static, and much better for the environment and prettier. Mixing your own emulsion also isn't that difficult. So much cheaper than buying Little Green etc. But you can't paint with latex paint over home made emulsion or limewash. Sponge-painted latex paint walls was done to exhaustion in the late 80s. Sortof like glossy apricot paint on textured wallcovering.

    I think I would have liked the wall paint effect better if it was done on top of one basecoat of the blue paint. To me it looks like something went wrong.
    It’s a rare Team AG miss for me.

    When I saw the sponges come out, I was crying, No!!! 🙀 I sometimes wonder what the new owners of my house where I did a textured sponge effect in the early 90s. When they wanted to paint a new colour they must have had to sand all the walls as really it was a bumpy mess. To be honest, I would prefer the solid colour . It’s such a gorgeous blue with incredible depth.

The vanity is my favorite ❤ it's nice to see moody dark styles because I'm burnt out on the light and bright tones where everything kinda looks the same.

    • @StephanieGraska
      @StephanieGraska Před rokem +25

      I was coming here to say the same. Everything looks great, and I don't mind the kookey mirror so much, but the paint... I saw so many 80s homes with sponge/rag ain't and it never ever looked good..I could say that this technique might have worked if they used it on an already tonal wall (shade up for brighter and down for moodier, your perference) but on top of the white it looks shabby cheap.
      Otherwise, I would love this in my house,
      P.s. I bet you 100% they repaint within the year.... sns

      I agree. Probably my least favourite renovation. The elements work but not quite the way it's been done. The white streaks are too prominent for my liking, and does not look like lime wash to me. i would prefer a more muted cloud look rather than the streaks. While the cupboard was lovey, I didn't like the glass as you could see the toilet paper and plumbing, which to me is an eye sore. It was kitsch, and will date pretty quickly. This was basically my reaction to the entire makeover. The walls look completely amateurish. The cabinet looks like it needs to be refinished. The sink -- how old will her toddler be before he can reach over the sides to wash his hands? The towel holder -- why not just order it in brushed brass instead of another amateurish attempt? Once the finish is altered, will it withstand the test of time? The toilet roll holder does not blend with the style of the room, and the metal bits are silver. The shelves look cheap. This is a hard no for me, except for the cabinet knobs. Compare those to the toilet roll holder and decide if they belong in the same makeover.

    Love the dark/ moody Navy direction for this small powder room with it's burnished gold accents & curved black shelves.

    I really enjoy your videos transporting myself back to the 90s when I was a few years older than you are now. The HGTV & TLC contents were full of DIY design projects with probably faux paint finishes being the most popular. I threw myself into that wholeheartedly. Christopher Lowell was extremely into this vibe. I copied one of his looks. It was faux leather. I painted a dining room with a deep red flat paint. In the same color applied high gloss, lifting off with massive wads of plastic wrap. Man that was ambitious.

    I love the mood of this bathroom. My Dad redid his bathroom in these charcoal tones and something just is a little off, and I realise now that it's the fixtures. They need to be brass, and adding some wooden elements will give it more balance. Thanks for the lesson, team AG.

      @@icecreammaker5007 oooh, stripes would be super distinctive. We had a sponge paint finish, and the wall looked like it was covered in drips or finger prints. We had already done one coat of the new colour and had to sand the whole wall pretty aggressively.

    Finally the style I’m into is featured, I love to see all the different styles for Inspo but I love Victorian vintage cottage dark academia moody spaces with hint of retro.
    I love the dark wood dark wall color, brass and gold elements, but not into the modern ones, some of it feels misplaced. Also don’t love how the texture pulled together but it had potential I think the sea sponge maybe with one coat of blue would’ve been interesting to see.

  • @Elin.Noller

    Walls look good, but do not look like lime wash. To "fake" lime wash you need two paints, one lighter and one slightly darker. Paint a solid coat of the lighter color, then dry brush (dry with just a hint of paint, dab it on a paper towel to remove excess paint)on top with the darker color. Use a lime wash brush and the same technique as when doing lime wash. Criss cross pattern.

    But somehow I feel like the functionality is being forgotten a litttle. Glass door into a bathroom storage is not gonna be so pretty when you remove the decorations and actually live there.

  • @shirleykathan-sayess5764

    A really beautiful technique, is to put on a base coat then apply a lighter or darker coat in small (3’) areas and go over the wet paint with wadded plastic wrap removing paint and leaving a texture pattern. You need to twist your hand so that the pattern is random and doesn’t look stamped. Labor intensive, but, in my opinion, worth the effort. It can be done in conjunction with a sea sponge, but the twisting hand is critical. Also, go over the edges of the sections so it doesn’t look checkered.
