    Note to self
    1. 15 minutes straight of just working on footwork (may include some head movement)
    2. Explosive workouts, speed ladder.
    3. Plyometrics (death jump)
    4. Being able to synchronize your feet and punches together. Retreating with the jab, pressuring with the jab.
    5. Balance: stand on one leg for 1 min, then the squat position 1 min

Thank you for this; I boxed when I was younger, and now I’m training my 10 year old daughter. We work the focus mitts, and use the bell, but her footwork needs work. I have tried to show her what to do, but this video has given me ideas of how to improve her coordination and speed. Again, thank you for this video.

Thanks so much for your wisdom Coach Jay Van. Your videos are a Win/Win for us boxers because if you are serious and humble, and stay open minded, you will always continue to learn something new. For me, the balance drills you mentioned are new to me and something that I must incorporate into my boxing training. As I incorporate the balance drills (examples: standing on one leg for 1 minute and squatting for 1 minute) into my workouts, it will only enhance my boxing.

I studied Chinese boxing goin on 12 years now. I always watch your vids. When you brought up boxing and training stances better like traditional martial arts...in my study thats the key to the next step in evolution of combat. Combination of east-west movements or circular/straight or slanting steps. I look forward to evolving the sport and maybe someday working with you coach! What you think about mma boxing? I think I'm better off boxing in mma and only focusing on a liver kick head kick and inside and outside leg kicks. Boxing is key man its the key for a more efficient takedown defense as well. The clinch range is perfect to combine some Chinese and western boxing. Creating new flows!!! Footwork is key!!!

Hey Jason, that’s a fairly difficult concept to grasp for most boxers until they have been at it for quite a while and I think you have simplified it as best one can. I have seen Eastern European inststructors utilize a full class heavy bag drill that humbles anyone because it shows just how difficult perfect coordination of a strike with a companion foot step strike can be- and they require both lead and rear and same and opposite side foot strikes. Yes it’s an exaggerated measure but if it’s mastered then going forward generating power from the “drop” so to speak of any leg/foot at any location will support any punch. I don’t know if I am being too clear and honestly I watched several videos on the subject before it started making sense. Related, and a necessary component you didn’t mention but it appears you certainly understand, the punch resulting from the this end chain starting at the ground and moving up your posterior chain more or less ideally “whips’ such that the trajectory from the shoulder would angle downward a few degrees and with that slight downward crook in the wrist which (the latter)I think is for strongest structural support. I believe the angle of the punch from the shoulder is not only to cap the shoulder for strength and power,to help shield the chin and face as with a proper jab when extended, but also because the power generated from the ground,up through the foot, leg, hips and on up will kind of whip almost centrifugally up and over the shoulder and down through the punch, kind of like a roller coaster I guess.
As to a visual- look no further than your logo- this is why I suggested you knew just what I meant even though I may not be explaining it that well.
Thanks for taking up the topic. As I am sure you have seen, there is not a whole lot written on this and what is has not been translated.
BTW, I think I have something constructive to contribute on the pendulum. I find it interesting that 6 months ago any mention of the pendulum on CZcams boxing comments was rare. Then Usyk-Joshua and it’s non-stop. I will get back to with my pendulum comment soon, thanks again for your efforts- the fact that you are always educating and updating yourself doesn’t go unnoticed Jason. I have quite a few years on you and am a Niagara District veteran from central New York. I remember several guys from Cabbagetown back in the late 70s and 80s,anyway....
