In this video I take you through step by step the process of removing the headliner in an Audi A4 Avant (B8/8.5 // 2009-2016). Every painstaking step is shown on camera and discussed in detail so that you can confidently attempt this job on your own and remove the headlining.
Whether you need to fix a rear drain leak or replace the headliner material, this step by step guide will have you covered.
This is the first video in my 3 part series on fixing a water leak in my Audi's rear sunroof drain. In the next video available on my channel I successfully fix the leak in the sunroof and then in the last video I re-install the headlining and reset the airbag warning light on the dash.

Finally, a competent DIY for the B8 avant with the pano moonroof. Dealing with the same issue right now, just got my headliner out and this video would've helped a lot. Thankfully I'm replacing it with the black headliner so I didn't have to worry about my old one, but getting the new one in will still be a pain...

Waiting patiently for part 2, I have the same issue.

There is NO WAY I would have made it this far without your help. Cant wait for Part 2 - especially since I’ve removed all the parts and now realize Part 2 isn’t uploaded yet!

I’m so close to finalising part 2. It’ll be up in a matter of days. Glad this one helped you mate. Stay tuned

Tremendous gratitude to you @@MichaelDrowleyCars from Vancouver, BC. Mine appears to be leaking at the frame ☹️ but I am hopeful Part 2 provides further insight that may help me.

@GHHodges I thought mine was the same too but it turned out to be a blocked rear drain - right at the top of the drain was gummed up so probing from the rear wheel well did nothing to fix it. Good news is it hasn’t leaked since but there also hasn’t been a huge downpour yet. But in part 2 I block the front and rear drains off to test the frame with standing water and the frame didn’t leak.

@@MichaelDrowleyCars That s EXACTLY what I found on mine! (Sorry… I couldn’t wait for Part 2 and started poking around on my own). I removed the drain tube at the top and then poked a pipe cleaner I the most upper portion. Water started flowing out. If I overwhelm the system with water it will leak at the frame (cassette) but it will now accept a very steady flow of water and divert it through the drain tube. We get A LOT of rain in the Pacific Northwest ( about 1.6 m per year) so it will not be long before my alleged fix gets out to the test. Parking on my sloping driveway only adds to the problem.

@GHHodges Can you seal up the cassette with some RTV/gasket sealer? Also seen guys use captain tolley’s boat sealer and you tape the underside and slowly build up a seal over a couple of days

25 subs but the most complete guide how to do it... nice :D
You also should consider to get plastic trim tools - they are nice to avoid any damages like on the fwd airbag sign.

Thanks for the advice on using plastic trim tools. Let’s hope there isn’t a next time… but probably will be when I have to redo headliner eventually

I JUST bought an 09 A4 avant and the rear compartment is full of water. Both sides by tail light and the spare tire area is soaked.
With this drain issue cause it to leak in those places?

Hi mate, Yeah I would say for sure this is a very likely cause of leaks into the rear quarter panel. Also check the rear wiper connection is still working as that can sometimes leak water into the rear quarters and finally a crack in the sunroof frame can allow water to seep in but that often also would show in the front quarters or in some cases it can drip down onto the front seats or soak the mid-console.
