  • The idea of Manifest Destiny was a major factor in westward expansion in the United States in the 1800s. This video will introduce you to the meaning of the phrase as you explore a primary source by John O'Sullivan and examine the painting "American Progress" by John Gast. You'll also understand the consequences of Manifest Destiny and the impact it had on different groups of people in the 1800s.

    This is a good presentation of American Expansion westward. It brings up many questions with European migration to the Americas and the confiscation of land from the indigenous Native Americans. In addition, there was enslavement of millions of African captives who were brought to the Americas to work for and to enrich a few European immigrants. In school we were taught Manifest Destiny justify European conquest and settlement of the American continent, while ignoring the killing and displacing of Native Americans. Yet would we want our homeland to be confiscated from us by force of arms? Then given to and owned by immigrants from the Europe? How would we feel if those same European immigrants then brought African captives to work on the land stolen from us? Such self serving barbarity. Is this not Manifest Destiny? Yes, it is.

      Yeah but one of the craziest parts is that we have people in the 21st century coming up with all sorts of ideas to try and justify this. And then they complain about illegal immigration and use the analogy of people coming into your home uninvited and "invading" when their ancestors did the same. And they don't admit it, in 2024, crazy times we live in!

      Our wars are fueled by the idea that we should force democracy on other countries. I personally believe this is a good thing but we’re forcing our will. I do not like war but we should all be free as human beings. We also influence with our culture or with propaganda that could be used against Russia, China or other federalist states. I’ve learned recently that American culture is absolutely everywhere and we influence the world in ways that no American would ever guess. It’s manifest destiny but we don’t take any land. Which is honorable in a way. To me at least. It has pros and cons of course.

    manifest destiny is the greatest example of american entitlement, they had no regard for the nations already thriving in the land. in my memory teachers never seemed to convey the idea that it wasn’t just a couple “tribes” but in fact half of a continent of nations with developed land and infrastructure. to me it holds the same sentiment we’ve held throughout history being it’s our apparent right and responsibility to “protect” the world from “dangerous” ideas i.e. anything different from our own. the reservations of today are an insult to the people whose land we’ve raped and pillaged for centuries. reservations are intentionally placed in inferior and low quality land forcing the people to rely on the american food supply and resources. our corporations have poisoned fishing communities, and dumped toxic sludge in the lands of the indigenous people for decades. making the national parks the property of the government making it illegal to hunt and fish was robbing the native nations from their long standing respectful and sustainable relationship with the land and animals and plants. and now international trade and the spread of capitalism has spread the disease of the american way. manifest destiny is a disgusting fucking sentiment and i despise this american brand of patriotic ownership of the land that we abuse this land is not my land or your land it was made for the human beings we hunted and scalped for sport and bounty. driving through the dirty car centric concrete wasteland of modern america leaves a foul taste in my mouth. education is important and we all need to learn about the vast european-american genocides of this land.

    • @milchi5122
      @milchi5122 Před rokem +12

      This is how humans are. we spread until territorial conflicts arise. There is no right or wrong. Europeans were far more developed and organized than the tribes dwelling there. they took the opportunity and settled to build a functioning society. and some of those moral justifications were their believe for being destined to conquer this land. I mean they did that pretty easily.
      Blaming the conscious of former settlers, for wanting to settle in new territory, for late stage capitalism, that rules in almost every corner of the world isn't going to cut it. Corporate greed and exploitism of todays standards was nobodies intention and is hurting everybody, no matter their view on this subject.
      Truth is: hadn't europeans touched the native land, there would be no sings of infrastructure or law. Who really knows if this was the better option.
      plus, yada yada yada... genocides caused by territorial conflicts have happened EVERYWHERE in the world. intristingly its only ever bad when euros do it.
      we live in a society.

      If the natives would have stopped killing, raiding and conquering each other in the late 18th century, they could have stopped the expansion. As you are not wrong when you say American "entitlement" every nation has had that mindset. I do believe that what our forefathers did was wrong. But show me a people's history, including native American, that isn't just like ours. We need to look at all history honestly.

    The people that expanded the US in North America were brave and daring .How many of you today can settle to an adventure like they did?They had to face the unknown .Some of them stole land from the natives but others bought it fare and square.Just like in Israel and Palestine(where a lot of the land that today is Israel was bought for huge sums of money).But the hypocritical part is this :those who are attacking those settlers today are profiting from what those men and women have achieved in the past.:the American civilisation.If those people were evil ,racist and other things why are you still living in America on the lands they conquered!?Go to another country were the land was not stolen and things like that.The only thing that I do not like about that painting(American Progress) is the part with the Native -Americans that have to live.Otherwise it is a painting that captures the spirit of that period.
