  • This suburban home has a garden rather than any lawn in the backyard. Japanese maples and conifers are both the foundation, and the dazzling features that grace each garden vignette. We highlight the attributes and mature growth expectations of several varieties. To WATCH full episodes, visit www.volunteerga...

My favorite is the Horstmann Silberlocke Korean Fir. I first saw this at Chanticleer Gardens. I purchased a 6 foot one last year and managed to kill it. So I took notes on your advice. I do have two little baby ones coming along.

2nd time I have watched this. So may of my Acer's have shrivelled up leaves, because we get a lot of wind where I live in rural Ireland. I am beginning to think this is not the country Acers like to grown in ....unless they are in a puny town garden with walls ? Can you help advice me?

It should also be noted there there are several varieties where the leaves curl however, in general, Japanese maples shouldn't be in locations where they are exposed to harsh winds. In general, these trees are understorey trees, meant to be grown under the protection of larger trees.

2:51 Wow! So which conifers are you growing in part shade (under 4 hrs sun)? Any arborvitaes? Cypress?

I checked in with the gardener, and here's his reply...Some Chamaecyparis, some arborvitaes (not sure which ones) and I’ve had good luck with Pinus parviflora (Jap. white pines) will do ok in some shade. But more important in this area is moist but well-drained soil . I do not dig holes for conifers, but place them on the ground and berm good soil around them. Most conifers do not like wet feet, and our heavy clay soil holds water too well.

@@volunteergardener this is great information! I will research those you mentioned. My largest Arb (4ft thuja plicata GG) is planted 1/2 in ground with the soil and compost around it the remainder. Then 3-4 inches of shredded pinebark mulch.

@@volunteergardener it’s an amazing garden. Inspiration to us all! In the last year I’ve planted 50 conifers in our backyard here in Iowa.
