Residential service non-union and running like heck haha, it’s an awesome career field to get into especially when you can go into somebody’s home, see their problem that’s been causing them some dismay and come up with solutions to resolve it, and some of the reactions after fixing it are priceless👍🏻

The first pro is definitely something that interests me. I worked a desk job, not moving at all, for a long time. It left me wanting to die. Sort of joking but sort of not. Now I've been a freelance creative for a while and while there is passion there...the stability is, so far, not great (a global pandemic doesn't help). So I'm grateful for your videos to at least give me food for thought. If I switch careers it will definitely be something along these lines, and after listening to this video, I think residential would be more the path for me. Thanks, Roger.

Residential & commercial service plumber / Johnny Rooter .
I get to help out people everyday! I can't believe you forgot to tell them about the satisfaction of stopping a flood in an elderly home or unstopping a sink for a new mom at no charge. There are parts of residential service that will never equal out to the emotional times I have with other humans.
When in harmony the home owner is helping and both people on site are looking with good intentions.
Sometimes you just have to be willing and although the downsides of having overbearing customers is very real it can't beat the healing you bring to the community and also maintenance it's health.

It sounds like you have your story’s confused on the subject. Service work don’t have an off time, you can’t leave a customer without service. Commercial has service work and it’s in and out with drive time throughout the day. Light commercial new construction is the best work, it’s a quick turn around, more organized and higher pay. If your doing residential new construction your not driving around all day.

How do you deal with customers who don't want to pay you in service? That is the reason my boss rarely sends us to do service calls when we are slow. He will only do service for his long time customers and sticks to new construction.

@Jo The Great we work on selling the value up front. We tell the customer the price before we start the work. If they don't like it we don't do the work.

The invoice States by texas law payment upon completion.
When I get a refusal to pay I keep the time charging while I wait.
It's important to be clear and upfront through the process as you pull material on to the job site.
During the freeze we had some con artist but you call the police for theft of service and wait on site and charge by the hour. If it takes all day then that's the bill.

Is it possible to be residential service and union. From what I've learned is it's very rare to work for a residential service company that's union.
I like working on people's homes and fixing their problems. It's definitely fulfilling. But at the same time I've realized being apart of a union pays more, better health benefits, and gives you a much better retirement. Kind of a small mini dilemma I'm trying to figure out.

    • @Z.the.G

Yes, if he reads and understands and conforms to the proper codes and installations required. Commercial is usually large-scale residential work in a main location.
