  • In the 1860s, the desert southeast of St. George, Utah was an important corridor for Navajo entering the area to raid Mormon settlers livestock. During Utah's Black Hawk War, a Mormon militia built Fort Pearce in order to counter the natives movement.
Utah's Black Hawk War is little remembered today but Fort Pearce is one of the lasting reminders of it.
in this video we explore the area around Fort Pearce then head a few miles away to check out the Warner Valley Dinosaur tracks to check out the area's Jurassic prehistory.

The dry wash near Fort Pearce had significant foliage throughout the base and edges. As arid as the entire area is there must be a good amount of water flow thru the wash during rainfall and monsoonal seasons I would think. The petroglyphs showed what appeared to be a Gila Monster possibly. No surprise given that desert environment overall. Another fine video, Steve. Thanks for sharing.......🤩

Thanks Steve, I've been by and stayed in St. George Utah many times and didn't know about this fort site and have never been to the dinosaur museum there. Two possible destinations for future dinosaur related things. A very impressive display of many dinosaurs together is at the museum that was built over a dried raised mud bed at the green River in Colorado up past Dinosaur, Colorado. The other major dinosaur place is Fruita and Grand Junction CO. Just inside the border of western Colorado off the I-70 is a place called Rabbit Valley, there is a short walking trail called Walk or journey through time where three complete dinosaur skeletons are embedded in the rock of the walk trail and two of them your have to step on. They are complete head to tail. One at the top of the trail now is missing the skull because it was removed and placed in the museum here in town. In Fruita you can walk a trail that tells you about the shallow sea that was here and see what lived here from fossil record, we had alegators and the largest dinosaur that ever existed in this now high desert. The huge leg bone was removed the the side of the Rock along the easy trail in the early 1900's and taken to a museum in Denver, your can stand up in the space where the leg bone wad removed. Also embedded in rock just sitting on the ground no bigger than a basket ball is a vertebrae of a dinosaur that was found there. A ancient stream bed is now exposed and that is where evidence of the alegator wad found along with some palm frawns left in the fossil record. Fruita Co is well known for it's celebration of its dinosaur heritage with paintings and names of different dinosaurs and a huge T-Rex in the middle of town.

My third great grandfather, Jens Larsen, a young Danish immigrant, was one of the first people killed in the Blackhawk War in 1865 in Fairview, UT. The graves of Jens and his disabled younger sister, who died just a few months later, purportedly of a broken heart, are in the pioneer cemetery there. Jens was the town shepherd. One day he took the sheep out to graze north of town, and the sheep came home without him. Those were brutal times.

I always like your choice of background music, which enhances the mood and doesn't compete with your great narratives. As you say, the Mormons and the Federal Government were at odds through most of that period in history. The stones used to construct the fort are really interesting. Appears to be sedimentary rock (which makes sense if there were prehistoric lakes in the area), but it almost looks like fossilized wood. I like that there are protected dinosaur footprints in the museum, and others where you can see them surrounded by open country. I think I'd freak out if I saw a 50 lb. lizard running on two feet. Perhaps an ancestor of the ostrich? Happy 4th to you and all of the other Side-trackers here.

Great video, Steve! By the way, I love your 65 million year old jokes. I live in Utah and had no idea this historical site existed. I'll definitely take a road trip to explore the area. I'll have plenty of time to do it as I officially retire on August 1st. I turn 70 on July 12th. Thanks again and keep up the good work!!!

Another good video. We have a number of areas up here in the Connecticut River Valley of Massachusetts where we have dinosaur tracks. See you next week.

When you said The Blackhawk War my first thought was the 1832-35 war in Illinois and Wisconsin that was named after Chief Blackhawk the main Native American leader. This one you are speaking about is new to me. More history to learn.😁
