    Oh, I LOVED this. It made me cry. I was brought up there but unfortunately had to move to London because of work. Then moved all over the UK with work. Now retired in York. I love it here but this post brought back so many memories of my younger days. Thank you so much. xxx

    Britain has Shrove Tuesday, from the last day before Lent and when your confession had to be made at church, and you were Shriven or forgiven. Pancakes were the using up of refined flour, sugar, and leavening before the 40-day Lenten fast. Mardi Gras means Fat Tuesday, when you pig out before Lent. Carnival is from "meat free" so is the day you eat meat for the last time before Lent. The German equivalent is Fasching - from the last taste of alcohol before Lent. We all celebrate this day in our own way.

      Apparently, we don’t all celebrate it our own way. Happen to be discussing Lent with a fellow coworker/colleague, and another one chimed in “not all of us are Catholic “.

    These pancake races are different to the ones I saw at Leadenhall Market in the City of London where you have to toss the pancake a few times during the race and if you drop the pancake you have to stop to pick it up and put it back in the frying pan (here they just appeared to do it at the start to prove the pancake wasn’t stuck down, but that may just have been the editing. Also maybe because the distance run is longer here).

    Traditional Shrove Tuesday British pancakes are the thin crepe like ones and we always had them with lemon or orange juice and sugar or golden syrup when i was a kid back in the 50s and 60s.

    The Cooper and Newton Museum in Olney is a gem, well worth a visit. It’s not only a celebration of John Newton, who wrote Amazing Grace, but also his friend, the poet William Cooper (Jane Austen’s favourite poet). My favourite hymn is ‘Hark my soul, it is the Lord’, words by William Cooper.
    1 Hark, my soul, it is the Lord;
    'tis thy Saviour, hear his word;
    Jesus speaks, and speaks to thee,
    'Say, poor sinner, lov'st thou me?
    2 'I delivered thee when bound,
    and, when wounded, healed thy wound;
    sought thee wandering, set thee right,
    turned thy darkness into light.
    3 'Can a woman's tender care
    cease towards the child she bare?
    Yes, she may forgetful be,
    yet will I remember thee.
    4 'Mine is an unchanging love,
    higher than the heights above,
    deeper than the depths beneath,
    free and faithful, strong as death.
    5 'Thou shalt see my glory soon,
    when the work of grace is done;
    partner of my throne shalt be:
    say, poor sinner, lov'st thou me?'
    6 Lord, it is my chief complaint
    that my love is weak and faint;
    yet I love thee, and adore;
    O for grace to love thee more!
    Pancakes…Lemon juice and sugar is what I remember as a child in Wales. Still the best toppings for nice thin pancakes in my opinion.

      I think the poet's name was spelt Cowper (if I've got the one you mean right). Pronounced like Cooper though.

    It's a shame you ended up having American pancakes, not traditional ones. I think you would have loved the thinner, nicer ones.

    Another great video. Huge fan of the channel, Mac - you have a lovely family. Just one question. When are you guys going to return for a longer visit to my hometown Bournemouth? It’s one of THE top destinations in the country - more Mediterranean than English in many respects - and it would make a great visit for the family this summer. All the best 👍

    Seriously suspect no way did those winners still have pancakes onboard when they crossed the finish line - or of they did they must have glued them to the pan !!🤪. Pancake parlour was serving scotch pancakes - not proper english pancakes which are a completely different thing.
