Just cuz they were deeper and up first doesn't always mean it's their wave. a long board gets into waves sooner than a short board so if you post up on aomeone like that and take their wave and claim it was yours dont be surprised when you get kicked off the the break and put in your place.

I try as a longboarder to get a conversation going with the shorties that can surf and then let them know that if they are it the right spot I'll call them on.

In this case he paddled from closer to the peak and turned to the inside to avoid the shortboarder. Rememeber a shortboarders can only take the wave later, so he had a right to go for it and pull out. Otherwise we waste waves on over-optimistic, greedy longboarders. N.B paddling closer to the peak is more important than paddling from deeper, otherwise we'd all just have to get SUPs/longboards to get any waves.

Red board has the right to the wave since he was coming from further back and therefore earlier. However, they both ended up on the wave and even tho red board has the right to the wave, he should exit in order to avoid the other guy having to jump of right where the foam is coming.
