Chicken Language Understanding Their Sounds

- In 12 years of raising chickens I have made some observations of all the different sounds that chickens make. Each sounds has it's own special use. There is one I missed because I didn't have footage of it. The roosters have a special sound they make unique to any other time when an over head predator flies near. He sounds off and the hens stoop. He stands tall and ready which causes the hawk to change its mind on an attack. Cool to witness but didn't have the camera to catch it.
This video has been 8 years in the making. I had been collecting clips and now since I am having memory issues on my computer I have been going through old footage to try to clean out files and attempting to make more space. So if the sound quality is poor it is because of using older footage, perhaps using an older camera.

This is the best video I could find that actually has the sounds and explains them. One other explained them but had no sounds 😂 a useless video. Thank you for a good video

Our neighbour had 6, and using your video, I managed to pinpoint what the 24/7(literally) crowing is about (Salutations).
LOL yes they crow at all times of day. If there is more roosters than one it can be very annoying. We currently have two so its near time to process him.
I have found with my own chickens that the egg laying song can happen before and after, guess it just depends on the bird and what's going on at the time. I know if they need to lay, but their favorite nesting area is being used, they will often do this in kind of a dominate fashion, trying to get the nesting area opened up.
I also make my nesting areas just slightly larger than the birds themselves, and they are also covered by a flap. The birds seem to love having privacy when laying and brooding. I also give them plenty of straw in their nests, they make a nice little bowl shaped area to lay in and brood.
My hen stays up past bedtime. She has separation anxiety. She cries when I leave. She talks all the time and tells me what she wants and she isn't shy about it. Still figuring out some of her language. She went from I couldn't get within 30 feet of her to wanting me to hold her all the time in about 1 1/2 years. We weren't looking for a hen. She just showed up and never left. We had to feed her.
Chickens are social animals perhaps she needs another hen or two to be friends with
@@DebraCarmona that has been a consideration. We have every predator imaginable. I would need to make a very expensive investment for a proper fortress, if I wanted to guarantee she lives. Her family was wiped out and she escaped to our property about 1000 feet away. I discovered this while searching for her owner. I thought she would just find her way home in the beginning. I found the owner and they never came to get her, but they told me what happened. Now she's my buddy, so I can't let anything bad happen to her. I wasn't prepared, but she is very much like a dog. Lovely animal. I didn't expect a bird and more specifically a chicken to be so tame. I was unable to handle her until I had to bring her inside because our temps were holding negative numbers. I'm still in training 3 years later.

@@DebraCarmonashe is my emotional support chicken. She's very affectionate, for a bird, I think. Wife took me to a chicken/livestock swap meet at our local feed store. I told her no to chickens. This happened in May I think. Delilah showed up in August of that year.

I am with you on that one chickens being easier than children mine now in their 40s so not a problem ,but give me hens over teen boys any day 😂
Ha ha I hear ya. I had five sons and one daughter. There was a period of time when they were all teenagers at once. It is a challenging time for sure. Raising chickens is relaxing. Can't say that about raising children although children can be just as entertaining as chickens at times.

Enjoyed the chickens, and the sounds were interesting. I've always been curious about how chickens keep their pecking order straight.
The most dominant hen makes sure everyone knows whose boss. The others learn to comply.
The dominate ones will give a peck on top of the others heads to indicate dominance, hence "pecking order".

Great video, roosters also do a long schrill squealing sound, and will stand near a hen who is laying, and join in making egg laying sounds too. Chickens must have about 10 distinct noises to communicate.

@@amandaflanagan1812 chickens wake up with the sun and go to roost at sun down or just before the sun sets. They like to roost as high as they can but there is always a pecking order. The top bird will dominate and choose the highest spot. It is a good idea to have an enclosed space (coop) for them to go inside at night. You don’t have to have a rooster to have eggs. Feed them laying pellets to encourage them to lay eggs. They will share nesting boxes or baskets so you only need a couple places for them to nest. Young chicks don’t start laying until around six months of age. When the days become shorter (less sunlight) they lay less eggs. Two reasons for having a rooster 1) they protect the ladies, watch over them. 2) to fertilize eggs if you want to hatch any yourself. To hatch eggs you need either a broody hen who wants to sit on the eggs or an incubator. Eggs hatch in 21 days. It is best to have only one rooster for a happy flock. Chickens will eat your table scraps so you’ll have less waste in your garbage. Never feed them raw potatoes. If their eggs shells are soft they need more calcium. Oyster shells will give them calcium. Favorite snacks for them are grub worms, pumpkin, and watermelon but they will eat just about anything. Hawks, possums, dogs, may pray on them. Protect the food source rats and mice like to get into it. Roaches will be attracted to the chicken feed and eat chicken poop. Chickens will eat all sorts of bugs including roaches. Bugs are a good source of protein for chickens so it is good for them to have places where they can go to scratch up bugs. Chickens will dust bathe to ride themselves of mites and bugs. A stationary coop is likely to get mites which can be troublesome for the chickens. A chicken tractor that moves every few days will prevent mites or parasites from plaguing them. A little bit of Apple Cider Vinegar in their water is good for them but not on very hot days. Hope that helps
Very helpful to hear and see chicken behavior so i can understand my own. I found Barred Rock on the road by a highway. She is such a good hen. I am working to build her a nicer home and get some company. I don't know her age, but she is laying about 3 eggs green/blue eggs per week. She has spurs, which led me to believe she was a rooster until she laid that first egg with us. Have you ever heard of hens with spurs? I am new to chickens as an adult. I grew up in a small town with a bunch on farm animals, but first time as an adult. Thank you for your help 🙏
Yes, I had a hen once with spurs. I love Barred Rock they are a gentle bird not as mean and aggressive as Rhode Island Reds.

Yes, it is confusing. They squawk before and after sometimes. I can't always tell if they have laid or not with their noise. All I really know is the hen house gets noisy when it's laying time.

Putting a baby chick in the mail is not safe.
A single one alone yes but a pack of them in a small box that prevents too much movement. It is done all the time. Accidents can happen but if mail carriers are gentle and notify the owner right away it can be perfectly safe. We have ordered them through the mail multiple times and have not lost one yet in that method.
the egg song,I have way more nest boxes than you and less hens ,you need to up your nest box spaced ,it’s uncomfortable for them if there is not enough nest boxes .
Perhaps this video didn't show all but I had up to 6 nesting boxes for only 12 - 20 hens and they still fought over the boxes. They tend to use the same box. At first the boxes seemed to big so we made them smaller. They still want to use the same boxes. It seems like they only use two boxes.
Have you thought of incorporating sign language into your videos. Might be helpful to someone watching.
Interesting idea. Not really but I do have a few videos with sign language made for the deaf.

@@mimosaa8829 how are her eating habits? Is her comb nice and red or is it faded? Does her crop look bigger than normal? If so she could have an impacted crop. Is she walking ok? Are her eyes clear? Does she have any drainage from her nostril? Do her feathers look normal are do they looked thinned and missing some of their texture? When it the last time she laid an egg? Are the scales on her feet lifted? All of these are things to look for troubles in a chicken.
@@DebraCarmona Thank you Debra for your interest I apreciate your help.This hen is a mother who hatched all the eggs that the other hens laid, after the eggs hatched she started to lay eggs again about 2 and half months later, the eggs were a little larger than usual she laid about 4 times and she started to get problem, I didn't realize until I saw her prollapsed vent, she passed a hard time for a couple week I took care of her, she is healed, everything is back to normal, now her feathers are provided again in her vent she eats well walk normaly looks very vigilant . Her comb is faded and she didn't lay eggs since about a month.

Piece of advice: Get into your subject without a lot of intro about how you got the chickens, etc. It's your channel, but you will get more subscribers if they know they are going to get right into what they expect to see.
I didn't ask for advice. This video has had over 14,000 views and gained me 64 new subscribers. I made this particular video just for the fun of it. My channel is consistently growing every single month so I must be doing something right. As far as my little intro I thought it gave credibility that I might know what I am talking about . . . my experience in raising chickens.
