  • My sound guy tells me my 12 string plugged in sound isn't great.
My luthier tells me the Black Angel is the best soundhole pickup around.
So I spent the money and did a sound test.
Recorded direct on a Zoom R16, no FX.

Fantastic review. This is what reviews should be like.

The guitar has a beautiful natural sound in your hands. I think the pickup can be improved with an IR pedal. I don’t think the magnetic pickup sound is a huge improvement over the piezo.

    Well played and demonstrated.
The sound is fine as long as there is some control when plugging it in and ' tarting it up'.
When singing over it I'm sure it is good enough.
Thanks.I haven't tried my pickups with the 12 string yet. They've just been lying there

I agree, with EQ and reverb it sounds much better live than I expected.

I was going to pull the trigger on the DiMarzio but every You Tube clip makes it sound brittle and metallic. I have had everything from Takamine Cool tubes, Fishman Presys, Fishman NEO, LR Baggs M1, Shadow.... I'd say for all of them have merits but one needs an acoustic pre-amp to tweak the EQ for the guitar and other variables. The Presys III is actually very good with some tweaking.I wasn't expecting it to be so as I've had some average Fishman piezos. The Baggs M1 passive seems to hiss a bit on my guitar but I actually quite like the tone...it seems warmer than these Di Marzios for old school strum/picking. I take some mids out and it doesn't sound so 'humbuckery'' which is good for my ears anyway..I like the oomph of the Baggs for some more subtle stuff and I've only used it live once but I think it has potential... What is yourr take on the DiMarzio?

I think the Black Angel is best as part of a dual or multi source system (like the LR Baggs Dual Source) - see Mike Dawes or Jimmy Wahlsteen. It is surprisingly loud for a passive pick-up, has a phase switch and volume wheel, permanent or temporary install and adjustable poles. It's as good as an active version.
Unfortunately on it's own it sounds much like most soundhole pickups - like an electric pickup on an acoustic guitar.
The Mimesis Kudos is the only soundhole pickup I've heard that's any good (see Chris Woods), but it's very expensive.
The Seymour Duncan SA6 and Fishman Rare Earth blend are OK but always sound a little thin.
The LR Baggs Dual Source with the element piezo and mic blend is my favourite so far, I've had over 40 pickup systems over the years.

    1st mic = 100% good
    2nd mic = 60% good
    3rd mic = 20% good
