The situation would be worse if they are married though but I agree with Dave there are bigger things going on! People need to stop getting married unless they change the system in the US. Of course there are happy outliers but just go talk to a divorce attorney or go to a divorce court and watch how the majority of people's lives are ruined financially. Especially if your wealthy.

They have a relationship problem, not a dryer problem. I agree with Dave. They either need to get married, or get off the ladder. I think the "elephant in the room" is the money. So what.... sign a prenup then if that's what is needed for the party with the money to be OK with the wedding.

This case is an outlier but the marriage penalty for disability is a very real issue. We cannot get married and keep our disability or medical benefits, even if we get divorced. We also can’t keep Medicare if we make above a certain income threshold (with some exceptions) which is why so many of us are unemployed. If you need extensive services above and beyond what a regular private health plan will cover you’re basically SOL if you want to work or get married.

It sounds like she is fearful to just go out and buy a dryer, anybody else in her situation would, and most boyfriends or husbands would not stop their significant other from doing so.
