We studied about Indian history and read about Pakistan in context of Indian history. We recognized the mistakes and horrors of the past. We enjoyed India-Pak matches. We love Pakistani music. Every one I knew around me felt that Indians and Pakistanis have too much in common. Trade relations, sports, cultural visits and peace are no-brainer ideas. That fresh-faced optimism lasted till the 2000s. Here is why Indians and Pakistanis are NOT the same. 1. Historical identity. India was and is a civilizational power. Our “Indian consciousness” goes back literal thousands of years and there is a direct lineage of thought. I am not exaggerating. That lineage is based on development of human intellect, advancing science and languages, welcoming foreign contradictory ideas and assimilating them. Different political systems have come and gone but this sense of Indianess have prevailed. I will not go into detail about where the idea of Pakistan fits in this subcontinental history but it sure ain’t the same. I laugh every time I hear a Pakistani say “we look the same, our food is the same, our clothes are the same” - NO, the similarity of your looks, food, clothes and ideas are limited to specific parts of north India. Our India is way bigger in size and in soul, than parts of Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana and Kashmir put together. This is not an insult. It's fact. I do not I look like Pakistanis nor eat the same food nor speak the same language - yet being Indian has been my strongest Identity since birth. This is what I find most Pakistanis on the internet fail to understand when they talk about India. RSS is mentioned in every second sentence as if RSS represents the national identity of India. They look at one negative and exaggerate it till it becomes an echo chamber. Please understand India in perspective. We may have some similarities but we are not equals. After 1947, Pakistani leadership looked at India as a comparable and beatable rival - in economy, in military, in diplomacy, while foolishly forgetting that from 1st millennium BC till the beginning of British rule, India had been one of the world’s largest economies. It is not shocking that India is now back to the top 5, just 75 years after the end of British plunder. Pakistanis have always underestimated Indians to their own detriment. 2. Spirit of Nationalism and Democracy. Since independence, Indians have had leaders who consistently worked for India’s future. Since 1947, there has been widespread corruption, illiteracy, economic devastation, casteism, nepotism - certain leaders took advantage of these, but there were other leaders who worked steadfast for India’s political unity, education, industrialization, farmer rights, federalism and most of all - helped develop democratic institutions that made sure the country works. The system is designed to withstand and push back attacks on democratic ideas, on religious freedoms and local cultures. It's not perfect but it works better than whats going on in the entire neighborhood. The trajectory of Pakistan and Pakistani leaders during the same period is there for everyone to see. When I hear Pakistanis talk in podcasts or in street interviews about corruption in their system, I don’t see any inclination or outrage to go out and fight for accountability from their leaders. So many Pakistanis think of their military as some sort of a Godfather. They also treat religious leaders as potential theocratic political leaders. You always get the leadership you deserve, whether they are PMs, Generals or Popes. In India, civilian leadership, entrepreneurship, secularism and diversity has flourished because there is a fix-it-yourself attitude. The federal structure of India has allowed for strong regional identity and competition between states. Each region being responsible for their own development (or lack there of). In Pakistan, the imposition of Punjabi culture/leadership over the entire state imploded as predictably as anyone could have imagined. In post independent India, we the people make the system, not the other way round. 3. Kashmir obsession. Kashmir is integral to the idea of the Indian civilization but Indians are not obsessed with Kashmir viz-a-viz Pakistan. Indians like me who are not from Kashmir, in the last 30 years have never even felt that Kashmir is a disputed territory. Countries like Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bhutan too have deep cultural and historical links to the Indian ethos, even if they are different countries today. We think of them as way more similar to Indians than Pakistanis. Kashmir is no different. Many different princely states were assimilated into the Indian state between the 40s and 70s, we view Kashmir as just one of them. I don’t think about Kashmir when I think about Pakistan. Holding the entire gamut of India-Pakistan relations hostage to Pakistan’s fantasies of Kashmir has harmed Pakistan more than India. India has border disputes with China, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, but that doesn’t stop trade, that doesn’t stop tourism, that doesn’t stop diplomacy, that doesn’t stop mutual respect. 4. Repeated betrayal of trust and civilian-military disconnect. The Pakistani military’s relevance in their country is dependent on an everlasting hostile India Pakistan relationship. Despite fighting 4 wars and losing all 4 (please refer to neutral history books), even in 2023, at the brink of economic collapse and overwhelming gap in military terms, Pakistani leaders and the average civilian still believe their military is somehow relevant to establishing good India Pakistan relations. This is in stark contrast to how diplomacy is conducted with any of India’s neighbours, including China. No one in India thinks of Pakistan in such existential terms. Not elected leaders, not the average voter. Here are a few examples of broken trust. Attempt at peace vs Subsequent betrayal Partition -> 1947 war Indus Water Treaty -> 1965 war Shimla Declaration -> Terrorism in Kashmir Lahore Bus Trip -> Kargil War Aman Ki Asha bonhomie of 2000s -> Mumbai attacks Back channels talks 2017 -> Pulwama Understanding the true nature the military/civilian relationship in Pakistan makes it impossible for an Indian to take an average Pakistani’s pleas for peace seriously. Using terrorism as a state policy against India for decades can’t possibly lead to goodwill and an honest atmosphere for peace. That is common sense. Pakistanis can point fingers at India for decades of espionage but not sustained terrorist attacks for decades. I hear Pakistani commentators repeatedly speak about how they have bigger hearts than Indians. Bro seriously? Every Indian generation lives with own memories of terrorists attacks from Pakistan and we are simultaneously supposed to open our hearts to the food, music, and cricket? When Indians and Pakistanis meet, the so-called people to people contacts has always been loving and respectful,. No one wants war and riots at the local level. But between themselves, I believe, Pakistanis suffer from a superiority complex and are the architects of their own undoing. Also I have observed that the clamour for peace from Pakistan is directly proportional to the increasing gap in economic and military power between the two nations. For me personally, this has been the biggest change in perception from my childhood to today. As a child, when I saw a Pakistani PM shake hands, I took it at face value, or at the least I thought that the Pakistani PM speaks for Pakistani people. Sadly, that was never the case. As much as I want to see legendary India Pakistan matches again, I want to see Pakistani artists being celebrated in India, as much as want to travel to historical places in Pakistan, none of that is relevant as long as there is no goodwill and honest recognition of India’s status in the world among all Pakistanis - not just the occasional podcasters and street interviewees. The onus lies with the Pakistani people to get their house in order first before demanding peace on equal terms. Ps- This post is not meant to insult Pakistani or Indian audiences. Pakistanis can point fingers at India for decades of espionage but not sustained terrorist attacks for decades. I hear Pakistani commentators repeatedly speak about how they have bigger hearts than Indians. Bro seriously? Every Indian generation lives with own memories of terrorists attacks from Pakistan and we are simultaneously supposed to open our hearts to the food, music, and cricket? When Indians and Pakistanis meet, the so-called people to people contacts has always been loving and respectful,. No one wants war and riots at the local level. But between themselves, I believe, Pakistanis suffer from a superiority complex and are the architects of their own undoing. Also I have observed that the clamour for peace from Pakistan is directly proportional to the increasing gap in economic and military power between the two nations.
For me personally, this has been the biggest change in perception from my childhood to today. As a child, when I saw a Pakistani PM shake hands, I took it at face value, or at the least I thought that the Pakistani PM speaks for Pakistani people. Sadly, that was never the case. As much as I want to see legendary India Pakistan matches again, I want to see Pakistani artists being celebrated in India, as much as want to travel to historical places in Pakistan, none of that is relevant as long as there is no goodwill and honest recognition of India’s status in the world among all Pakistanis - not just the occasional podcasters and street interviewees.
The onus lies with the Pakistani people to get their house in order first before demanding peace on equal terms.
Ps- This post is not meant to insult Pakistani or Indian audiences. It is my personal perspective based on my experiences of being an outside observer over 25 30 years. Disagreeing opinions are welcome as long as they are backed with credible references.
