- In this video I am going to show you just how often you should be adjusting your valves.
Detroit originally recommended valve adjustments be done at 100,000 miles then at 250,000 miles and finally at 500,000 miles.
But what happens after 500,000 miles?

Hey what up y'all, just had my trucks valves adjusted for the first time since I've owned this truck and man bro let me tell you!!! It's like driving 2 different trucks!!! This DD15 definitely has a lot of balls when running at its potential!! I'm glad I did it and would highly recommend O/O's get valves adjusted on a regular basis

It’s never a bad idea. Valve recession is a common issue on these causing the valves to be tight. It should be considered normal maintenance. Cheers!

Both rocker arms on ethier cylinder 1 or 6 should be fully open intake and exhaust and the opposite should be fully closed when you try to move rocket arm
Awesome video. When torqing down.how do you stop nut from moving the bolt..messing up the adjustment?
I use the Allen to hold it and the wrench to tighten.
Detroit recommends such large intervals because they never go out of spec. That's the nice thing about modern diesel engines. It's not just Detroit.
Never go out? Thats a joke. They are out every 200-300k and continue to wear. They don't tick initially, but there's a difference. Do your initial and then do it again at 300k. Its out. You have rotating metal parts. They wear. They move. Saying they never go out, shows your lack of knowledge. Please don't put out information on something you don't know anything about.

When you start first cycle of adjustment do you do were the engine is parked or you turn the engine to a Marke to do the first round?
The first cycle will mean you are TDC 1, once you are done with the valve adjustment. You rotate the engine 360 degrees and that will put you at TDC6. When you are at TDC6, there are no timing marks, you have to look at the front of the CAM and make sure they are up and down.
You verify this by looking at the mark on the flywheel and make sure it lines up with the flywheel housing. Use the timing pin to make sure
Couple of dumb questions: (1)I'm assuming that at some mileage interval prior to this video, the valves were adjusted correctly. Is it valve seat wear that causes the adjustment to "tighten" as you demonstrated in the video? (2) can you explain how valve maladjustment can lead to increased soot in the OneBox?
You are correct, the seats wear out and the valves will be tight or tighten over time. Most valves are adjusted while the engine is under warranty but after that I am pretty sure they won't be.
Increase soot in the One Box is because the valves are not opening and closing correctly and the fuel being injected will not be burned properly.

I was given the sheet of maintenance when I purchased my Freighliner with dd15, but it says 100k, 500k then 1mil 😏😏....i did 100k, now doing it to 500k, but I am worried I didnt do it often.

I don’t understand why Detroit does it this way. I understand when the DD15 was first introduced and the intake CAM had a two lobes but when Detroit switched to the single lobes I’ve noticed the change in the engine and how tight the valves were getting in a short period
I have a van hool Dd13 can’t rotate from bottom but I can do it on alternator, only turning left (driver side) looking in flywheel is turning passenger side. The engine is at the back of coach, how can I find out which is the right side to turn it?
Something I heard was synthetic oil should be used instead of regular oil. Regular oil creates a lot of soot compared to synthetic. Less soot, less build up in the filters. Do you find this to be accurate?
I know the newer engines 2017 and up use 10W-30 semi synthetic oil. This might help with the soot. Not sure if that is true, we are just starting to get more of these coming into our shop.
Typically the used truck market starts to make its way out of warranty and then we start to see it.

I got a valave adjustment twice in the past 7 months. When it’s adjusted all the problems and ticking goes away but comes back after like 20-30k miles rough idle and ticking when engine is cold and idles okay when warmed up but when taking off from a stop your hear a small tick
Might be a sign of something going on with the cylinder head.
How much did you pay for the adjustment?
A valve adjustment is around $350-400.
I have a 2009 freightliner cascadia my truck been to 3 shop and and I have no luck my question is how can I adjusted my valves myself
You need a 17mm for the lock nut.
The feeler gauges for the intake and exhaust and I recommend the timing pin to help ensure you are TDC1 and TDC6. You can rotate the engine with the flywheel using a flat screwdriver but that will be a slow process.
Watch my other videos on how to adjust the valves on a DD15. Pretty easy once you get the hang of it. Just take your time.

you mentioned the one box was completely plugged. did you have to replace the one box or just the filters
I sent the DPF filters to be cleaned and baked. The One Box did have to be repaired due to the DOC being plugged with soot. We were able to save them and not replace.

The inside of the box, the part the houses the DOC or holds the DOC was damaged because of plugging

Puede ser el tanke, puede ser el compresor de aire, EGR , o puede ser algo en el motor como el empaque de la cabeza

Since it is a duel cam does it have more valves or bigger valves what's the difference between single cam as far as valves
Four valves per cylinder. Two intake and two exhaust valves. Duel over head cam is said to provide more power and efficiency.
Most DD15 and DD13 engines should get around 7 mpg with a manual transmission. Automatic transmission is said to get around 8-9 mpg.

In my truck there is tickling sound when it is idling sound. When I do cold start it looks like engine knocking out. I have bought this truck a couple of days ago. It is 2018 new body Freightliner Cascadia. Could send the video link how it is fixed. Actually what is the problem? Could you give an idea what is going on? The mechanic checked the fault codes with computer. There were #4 cylinder was misfiring . The fault code was SPN1326 FMI 31. And there were another faul code for After treatment system. The code is SPN 520349 FMI 14. Could you give me an idea what I have to do? Thanks
If it is showing a misfire fault code, I would start with a valve adjustment right away. I almost sure the valves are tight on the intake.
Try this first. Engine must be cold.
Have your mechanic do a compression test first. This will let you see the results.
Then perform a valve adjustment.
Then after your done with the valve adjustment perform another compression test and compare. You should see a big improvement. Especially on cylinder number 4.

how much rotation need to be done for the manifold side?
Start on TDC1, make your adjustments and then rotate 360 degrees. You should be at TDC6 and make your final valve adjustments.
If you start at TDC6, that’s fine too. Look at your intake valves to confirm which turn you are on
Do you think this adjustment will help with fuel consumption. I have a cascadia 2019 dd15 and fuel consumption is 6.6mpg. 220 miles on quarter tank of fuel. 150Gallon tank.

It is a great place to start especially if you have not had the valves adjusted before. Also try using good quality diesel

Engine brake depends on the year of the engine. Sometimes the rocker will say which gauge to use for the engine brake.

I would treat it the same, valve adjust at 100K to 150K miles.
All depends on use, idle time
The top end adjustment should be every 150,000 miles. If you need to do it every 100,000 miles you most likely have gear ratios that keep your RPMs sky high while driving on the highway.

Mine had been done at the recommended miles, but my gut was telling me to do it anyway. I didn't listen to my gut... I wish I had seen this a year ago, I am having a new head installed due to the valves receding in to the head. $400 service or a $10k repair, your choice... every 100k miles is cheap insurance. no real symptoms, occasional misfire code was all, till it began ticking...
Sorry to hear that. Paying for a valve adjustment is definitely cheaper.
These DD engines are good but definitely require more TLC
i bought a 2014 with a DD15 couple of yrs ago with 550k and put 250k miles on it since. never done a adjustment no engine issues so far. what can happens if i dont do a adjustment.
The valves (seals) over time start to wear out and the clearance or lash starts to get smaller or tighter and will eventually effect performance. Most trucks are okay, but it wouldn’t hurt to have your mechanic take a look.

It can contribute to many things especially since the valves are not opening and closing because they are out of adjustment. That can lead to unburned fuel which can cause excess soot which will make its way downward to the after treatment system.
Maintenance is critical with DD engines.

Depends on how many hours or miles you have driven. This will or can cause the valves to tighten. How many miles are on the truck?

@@shaggmaster2300 have someone check your AC compressor, the clutch maybe burned out. Also, have someone check the AC system for leaks.
@@CarlosDieselElectric crazy to think that can cause the valves to tighten so soon. I was told could be signs of a bad head because some of the studs were backed out.
@@shaggmaster2300 anything is possible. If you are in doubt have the cylinder head removed and sent out to a reputable machine shop for inspection. They can test the cylinder head and rebuild if necessary. If everything checks out then reinstall the cylinder head and you should back on the road asap.

Lol it looks this truck never had overhead before . Valves too tight. I do valve adjustment 100k and then every 200-250k. Every 100k no need. Every 200k you put feeler gauge no problem.
Nice, glad to hear. Most truckers treat these like the old engines. They were really good engines that required less maintenance. But the new engines are different
I see a different way to do it the guy just run the engine by key little by little and catch when the valves are close after he adjust it no tdc no tools only fillers gages 🤣👍

Some mechanics definitely add some extras on there for their own benefit.
I always explain to my customers the before and after and explain any extra parts that had to be changed.
If it is expensive, I always get the ok.

My 2012 Cascadia DD15 is making a horrible noise clack clack clack, Is is the cylinder valve or rod? Please help
Run a compression test to see which cylinder might be having issues. Low compression number will help indicate if there is a potential problem. Does the sound happen when it’s cold? Warm? Is it all the time?

@@Reeldeal818 sounds like fuel. Remove the fuel filter (small) and check for metal debris. If it is present, then possibly the fuel pump is bad.
@@CarlosDieselElectric But why is it making knock noise? My driver did run out of fuel twice in 2 in 2 days...
@@Reeldeal818 you are going to have to run and see fuel pressure, oil pressure, compression test and maybe even start removing the oil pan and look at the connecting rods. Maybe something is broke. Start small and go from there.
