- Part 2 of the DD15 valve adjustment, trying to make this as simple as possible. Performing a valve adjustment is one of the easiest things to do if you are having regen issues, low power, poor fuel economy and is part of the recommended maintenance.

I don’t know why you don’t have more views. You are correctly knowledgeable and aren’t a know it all. You work very clean and explain very clear. You have people here that are know it all and are giving incorrect advice at times. I’m 40 now I wish they had you tube when I was doing this engine work. Keep up the good work.
It takes time for the algorithm to let people know. The more people get involved with questions the more the algorithm show to more viewers.
Cause most people don't do their own oil changes let alone an overhead. Very few people search these kinds of videos out.
Your instructions on the set up are bang on ...great video
Thank you
You are actually gaining interest, not losing our attention with such deep in to the heart videos. Even though I understand nothing )) yet. Keep it up
Dmitry Denisov thank you.
You are the best! Thank you. I saved a lot of money
Thanks a lot
excellent tutorial, thanks very much
Thanks Carlo's for sharing and taking time so we learn 👍✌
Cesar Vargas you are welcome.
@@CarlosDieselElectric that video was perfect! This is exactly what we needed to know thank you so very much for taking the time and making this video. I have been waiting for an exact way on how to do this. I'm looking forward to your Jake brake sequence, and again I can't thank you enough, done perfectly explained perfectly, well done!
Thanks
The best video someone made it so far . Can you please show how to remove cover and put back on with the gasket. Thank you
Excellent teaching 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Great video nicely explained and broken down 👍🏻
Thank you
Thanks for the video. Still waiting for that jake video 😉
Nice
nice details very informative thanks
Hi there very good material , on the second rotation you gave to do it or just as shot off engine , I notice you did fist rotation . The marks on the gear you put that on or is from factory . Thanks I will review video as well
Mario can you make a video of jake brake adjustment...on dd15?
Hi friend (Carlos? Pedro?). Thank you so much for this excellent video. You make the others look sick. I have adjusted valves on motorcycles (both threaded adjusters as well as shims) so this job looks pretty straightforward.
Question: I understand that the Allen key is used to adjust position of valve, I'm guessing clockwise to tighten, counterclockwise to loosen. Is this correct? Also, once correct adjustment is achieved, do you hold adjustment with Allen key in one hand while simultaneously using a 17 mm box wrench to tighten locknut in order to secure the adjustment? Appreciate your input. Gracias por ayudarnos. Qualquieres informaciones que nos pueden salvar de los abusos de ciertos garages abusivos son bendiciones. Hasta pronto.
Great video … nicely explained …
Good explain
Thanx for the video.
Great video. Hey can you do one for adjusting the Jake
I posted a video for the engine brakes on the DD series engine.
Wow excellent good job nice video thanks
Jr Cruz thank you
Great Informational Video!! When tdc 1 is piston one suppose to be up all the way or all the way down?? Also any signs of a jake brake adjustment video? 😁
When you have TDC, it will either be TDC 1 or TDC 6. Both pistons (1 and 6) go up together. Depending on the CAM's, that will determine if you start on 1 or you start on 6. If the valves are pushing downwards then start with the other side. For example if Intake and exhaust valves on # 6 are being pushed down then start with valves 1 (intake and exhaust) and follow the chart from there.
I always use the the timing marks and timing tools to help me determine where to start. I will do a jake brake video, just need to edit then post.

Carlos muy buen video..y como haces el freno de motor...despues de q haces las valvulas?
Moises Cabrera gracias, si voy hacer un video del frenó del motor.
HI i like your videos very much .thank you for it. do you have any one in NJ why can do it ? [ you trust?]
Hello I'm trying to set the timing on a 2011 dd15 and I'm try do get a idea what the cams should look like when in time on tt6 and on tt1.
Great video please do engine brake lash on dd15
Robert Krok that will be next.
You greate bro
Thank you
Mui inportantes es tra tejia
Perdió intake is 4 mm and exhaust is 6 mm ? Also intake there located in driver side right and exhaust in passenger side ?
Correct. The valve adjustments are done in two rotations. TDC 1, make your adjustments. Then rotate 360 degrees to TDC6 and make your final adjustments and you are all set.
If you dont mind ,where is your shop located?
Montebello, Ca.
How did u get the book
I purchased the books from Valley Power Systems here in Southern California. I am pretty sure you can buy them from any authorized Detroit Diesel. They are worth their weight in gold, especially if you are working on DD15 and DD13 engines.
Thank you for this. Dealer just charged me $650 for the job.
Do you use new cover gasket or silicone?
The valve cover gasket is reusable.
@@CarlosDieselElectric thanks
@@CarlosDieselElectric gracias super agradecida.
Hi Carlos what if all of the valves are tied how can i know which cylinder is in tdc?
Vitaliy Ryshchak how are you confirming TDC? When you rotate the engine, underneath at the flywheel you need to look for the dimple and insert your timing pin where your cranking sensor goes. Then go up to the rockers and check cylinders 1 or 6. One of these will be where you need to start.
Yes, but what if 1 and cylinder 6 have tightened valves, how can I know which cylinder is in tdc
Vitaliy Ryshchak ok, look at the lobes on the Cam (intake). Which ones are pushing up? Are the lobes at the number one pushing up or are the ones at the number six pushing up? In other words, if the lobes are pushing up and causing the rockers to go down. Then go to the opposite cylinder.
Let me know if that makes sense.
Carlos Diesel Electric yes, thank u exactly what i was looking for.
Its normal at tdc #1 having intake rocker arm on cylinder number 5 lose?
Vitaliy Ryshchak look at the chart or diagram on my video. Check the other valves and see if they correspond with the sequence. For example, if the lobe on the rocker is pushing up and causing the rockers to go down towards the cylinder head then that valve can not be adjusted. So let’s say the lobes are up and pushing on the number 6. Then start adjustment on number 1 intake and exhaust and then follow the chart.
On the truck you are working on, where are the lobes on number 1 and 6?
Where did you buy your books?
I purchased my books from Valley Power Systems in City of Industry, Ca.
Te hago una pregunta maestro los feeler 16 intake y los exhaust son .24 escape pregunta?
Intake 0.16 (.406mm)
Exhaust. 024 (.610mm)

Hi,
Dd15 cranks no starts, code spn157 fmi16.
Fuel pump changed with fuel filters housing . Still no starts just cranks.
Please advise
sandy bil how are you priming the fuel system?
Carlos Diesel Electric thanks for replying. I used special prime tank. I filled it up fuel and hand pump it
sandy bil a few other questions I forgot to ask, why did you change the fuel pump? Did the truck have the problem before? Why did you change the fuel pump?
Carlos Diesel Electric truck ran out of fuel, road service add some fuel it ran 2 days , then stopped.
Fault code Spn157 Fmi 16,
sandy bil this is going to be tricky. When the truck ran out of fuel and they added fuel, did they use starting fluid to try and start it? If they did, you could have bad injectors. I hope that is not the case but I have seen that.
Where is your shop please ?
We are in Montebello 90640
How much u guys charge for valva adjustment for a DD15 cascadia 2019?
Typically a valve adjustment will cost you $350-$450.
@@CarlosDieselElectric how long those it takes
@@stilliraise9201 I tell customers it takes 2 day. If the customer brings me the truck on Monday morning. By Tuesday around noon it will be ready. The job takes a few hours, but you have to let the engine cool off before you begin to adjust the valves. So the first day I just remove the parts that are in my way so the next morning I can start right away.
@@CarlosDieselElectric last time they did a valve adjustment was at 202k.my companys technicians said they can't heard any unusual valve noise so they refused to do it at 294k. Gosh !!!

Second round timing mark i don,t understand brother
Think of the engine as having two turns. The first turn (rotation) will be TDC1, which means both piston 1 and 6 will be up at the same time. But you can only adjust the valves on the first rotation. You can confirm the timing by the marks on the gear.
Then you rotate the engine 360 degrees and you will be TDC6 (2nd rotation). Again both pistons 1 and 6 will be up, there are no visible timing marks except for the flywheel. Then you adjust the valves and that’s it.
لو سمحت ممكن الحصول على ذلك الكتاب أنا مهتم
I don’t understand what you are saying. Use google translate
So the first rotation I have is 6 so I use .024 feeler gauge for 6,6 5, 4, 3 & 2 than I use on second rotation 1,1 2, 3, 4 and 5 .016 feeler gauge correct
Benito Jr Romero give me a few. I can double check when I get back to my shop.
Carlos Diesel Electric ok thanks
@@benitojrromero8085
If you are TDC 6 or as I call it 2nd rotation:
Valves In: 3, 5 and 6
Vavles Ex: 2, 4 and 6
Then rotate engine 360 degrees TDC1 or 1st rotation:
Valves In: 1, 2 and 4
Valves Ex: 1, 3 and 5
Intake lash 0.4 mm
Exhaust lash 0.6 mm
Hope this helps.
@@benitojrromero8085
The lobe on the INTAKE cam will tell you which rotation you are on.
For example, if the #1 lobe on the INTAKE is pushing up on the rocker and compressing the spring downward towards the cylinder head then you will most like need to adjust the other valves or you are on what I call the 2nd rotation.
Carlos Diesel Electric ok got it but if I need more assistance will it be ok to message you again tomorrow
I recently did my valve adjustment in Chicago for $300. 7000 miles later I noticed some oil leak between engine head and valve cover and I saw that some bolts are halfway out and shaking while engine is On. The mechanic forgot to tighten them. I went to that shop and they explained that "...this is normal, it's because of engine vibration" WHAT?????
Some bolts I could easily turn by hand.
So, mech started to tighten them up and didn't know what lb torque to put on those bolts. At first he used 15 lb, but said that "... it feels too light", and shop manager said " Try 22 lb, I think 22 will work".
So they told me to keep an eye on those bolts. I'm afraid to think what they did inside to the valves, and if they really did.
Never use SHARP EXPRESS at East Dundee IL. God save your truck from those mechanics!!!
My question What is the torque for the bolts on the valve cover should be? Thank you.
Hi, was your truck making any type of noise?
there is a torque specification for each bolt. maybe he tight with hand and didnt cross check again
You get what you pay for. Take it to the dealer for these type of repairs or maintenance. These mechanics need to be certified to work there while that may not be the case with smaller shops.
Carlos how can i contact you?
You can email or text, which do you prefer?

broke those stupid plastic coolant lines running down the backside of the engine.
Yeah, they suck. I have broken a few myself. The problem is over time they become brittle.
Timing pin???? You don't need no stinking timing pin!!!!! Ha ha haaahhahahah!!!!!
So when u rotate again it’s going to land on same dot underneath the fly wheel or there two different dots ?
It will land on the same dot. But then you go from TDC 1 to TDC 6
