DD15 valve adjustment Part 2 on a Freightliner Cascadia

  • Part 2 of the DD15 valve adjustment, trying to make this as simple as possible. Performing a valve adjustment is one of the easiest things to do if you are having regen issues, low power, poor fuel economy and is part of the recommended maintenance.

You have people here that are know it all and are giving incorrect advice at times. I’m 40 now I wish they had you tube when I was doing this engine work. Keep up the good work.

  • @californiadreaming9216

    Hi friend (Carlos? Pedro?). Thank you so much for this excellent video. You make the others look sick. I have adjusted valves on motorcycles (both threaded adjusters as well as shims) so this job looks pretty straightforward.
    Question: I understand that the Allen key is used to adjust position of valve, I'm guessing clockwise to tighten, counterclockwise to loosen. Is this correct? Also, once correct adjustment is achieved, do you hold adjustment with Allen key in one hand while simultaneously using a 17 mm box wrench to tighten locknut in order to secure the adjustment? Appreciate your input. Gracias por ayudarnos. Qualquieres informaciones que nos pueden salvar de los abusos de ciertos garages abusivos son bendiciones. Hasta pronto.

    • @CarlosDieselElectric
      @CarlosDieselElectric  Před 4 lety +2

      When you have TDC, it will either be TDC 1 or TDC 6. Both pistons (1 and 6) go up together. Depending on the CAM's, that will determine if you start on 1 or you start on 6. If the valves are pushing downwards then start with the other side. For example if Intake and exhaust valves on # 6 are being pushed down then start with valves 1 (intake and exhaust) and follow the chart from there.
      I always use the the timing marks and timing tools to help me determine where to start. I will do a jake brake video, just need to edit then post.

    • @CarlosDieselElectric
      @CarlosDieselElectric  Před 5 lety

      Vitaliy Ryshchak how are you confirming TDC? When you rotate the engine, underneath at the flywheel you need to look for the dimple and insert your timing pin where your cranking sensor goes. Then go up to the rockers and check cylinders 1 or 6. One of these will be where you need to start.

    • @user-do4ti9wb1s
      @user-do4ti9wb1s Před 5 lety

      Yes, but what if 1 and cylinder 6 have tightened valves, how can I know which cylinder is in tdc

    • @CarlosDieselElectric
      @CarlosDieselElectric  Před 5 lety +1

      Vitaliy Ryshchak ok, look at the lobes on the Cam (intake). Which ones are pushing up? Are the lobes at the number one pushing up or are the ones at the number six pushing up? In other words, if the lobes are pushing up and causing the rockers to go down. Then go to the opposite cylinder.
      Let me know if that makes sense.

    • @user-do4ti9wb1s
      @user-do4ti9wb1s Před 5 lety

      Carlos Diesel Electric yes, thank u exactly what i was looking for.
      Its normal at tdc #1 having intake rocker arm on cylinder number 5 lose?

    • @CarlosDieselElectric
      @CarlosDieselElectric  Před 5 lety

      Vitaliy Ryshchak look at the chart or diagram on my video. Check the other valves and see if they correspond with the sequence. For example, if the lobe on the rocker is pushing up and causing the rockers to go down towards the cylinder head then that valve can not be adjusted. So let’s say the lobes are up and pushing on the number 6. Then start adjustment on number 1 intake and exhaust and then follow the chart.
      On the truck you are working on, where are the lobes on number 1 and 6?

      @CarlosDieselElectric  Před 4 lety

      sandy bil this is going to be tricky. When the truck ran out of fuel and they added fuel, did they use starting fluid to try and start it? If they did, you could have bad injectors. I hope that is not the case but I have seen that.

      @CarlosDieselElectric  Před rokem

      Think of the engine as having two turns. The first turn (rotation) will be TDC1, which means both piston 1 and 6 will be up at the same time. But you can only adjust the valves on the first rotation. You can confirm the timing by the marks on the gear.
      Then you rotate the engine 360 degrees and you will be TDC6 (2nd rotation). Again both pistons 1 and 6 will be up, there are no visible timing marks except for the flywheel. Then you adjust the valves and that’s it.

    I recently did my valve adjustment in Chicago for $300. 7000 miles later I noticed some oil leak between engine head and valve cover and I saw that some bolts are halfway out and shaking while engine is On. The mechanic forgot to tighten them. I went to that shop and they explained that "...this is normal, it's because of engine vibration" WHAT?????
    Some bolts I could easily turn by hand.
    So, mech started to tighten them up and didn't know what lb torque to put on those bolts. At first he used 15 lb, but said that "... it feels too light", and shop manager said " Try 22 lb, I think 22 will work".
    So they told me to keep an eye on those bolts. I'm afraid to think what they did inside to the valves, and if they really did.
    Never use SHARP EXPRESS at East Dundee IL. God save your truck from those mechanics!!!
