Salut Eric, I'm glad you enjoyed this one, thanks!
Super merci 👍
You’re so welcome! 😊
What a nice job Lara. Your channel has been a godsend because this year I was really wanting to work on finger picking patterns. How do you know what ornamental notes to use for each cord? Trail and error, or is there some theory to learn.
Hi David, I'm so glad you're enjoying the fingerpicking lessons! I typically create ornamental notes by playing with different hammer ons and/or pull offs to see what sounds the best with the song. Thanks for the question and I hope you have fun with this 😊
Hi Lara. You are amazing and after playing my ukulele for 4 years I am now enjoying it so much more. May I ask please if you have a picking instruction video for another of John Denver’s songs called ‘Today’. Thanks you
Hi Beverly, I'm so glad you're enjoying the lessons! I haven't covered "Today" but I'm happy to add it to my requests list for future consideration. Thanks for the suggestion!
Hi Lara can you play the song Pledging My Love with ukulele tutorial. Thanks much!
Hi Cathy, thanks for the suggestion! It's on my requests list.
hi Lara, I love your teaching. I play Countryf Road by G, Em, D, C,and G. where can I put the capo to play with you ?
Thanks so much Sylvie, glad to hear you're enjoying my lessons! If you'd like to play the chord shapes of standard G, Em, D, C, then you would need to put the capo up almost an octave to the 10th fret to be in the key of F and play with me in the same key. On the other hand, if you'd like to play the chord shapes that I'm playing (F, Dm, C, B♭) but play/sing in the key of G, then you could put the capo on the 2nd fret (and you and I would be in different keys). Thanks for the question!
Hi Lara, excellent tutorial! Two questions: are you using the New Nylgut AQ-15 wound low G set in this lesson and is it your preferred string set on your tenor ukuleles? Regards
Hi Joaquim, glad you enjoyed this lesson, thanks! 😊 Yes to your first question. To your second question, lately my favorite strings are Uke Logic super carbon with the soft tension low G. They're available on this site: theukulelesite.com
Thanks, Sarah - this was great. Please can I ask what is bmp you playing at?
Glad you enjoyed this! I'm playing it around 152 bpm if you want to hear every beat, or 76 bmp if you want to hear every other beat. Have fun with it! 😊
I love this! Can you suggest grace notes for a C/Am/G key? I can’t sing as high as you (plus the chords are easier bonus)
I'm glad you enjoyed this Jess!😊Here are some suggestions for playing it in C:
For C, add the 3rd fret of the 2nd string which makes it a C5 chord.
For G, play the 3rd fret of the 1st string with your pinky (or hammer on from the 2nd fret after picking the 1st note of the pattern) and then lift your pinky up to play the 2nd fret the 2nd time you pick the 1st string.
For Am, you can hammer onto the 2nd fret of the 4th string or you can add the 3rd fret of the 1st string.
I would apply these options to the chords that are played for 2 full patterns, playing these variations on the 2nd pattern. Have fun with this and thanks for the question!
@@LaraMarkowitzMusic thank you SO much you’re awesome!
I have a question with the Travis picking pattern. This is the first time I've heard of it. I'm finding it easier to pick with just my index and thumb. Omitting the middle finger because it seems to make me clumsier (big hands). I'm afraid that if I commit and learn by just using two fingers I'll hurt myself in the future if I'm trying to learn other songs. Would omitting the middle finger hurt me later down the line?
Thanks for the question! You won't be limiting yourself if you use only your thumb and index finger. That's actually how Merle Travis did it. I prefer to include my middle finger, but it's all about finding what's most comfortable for you 😊
I am struggling with the Bb chord. not just within the song, but just to get it to sound good in a single strum. Is there an alternate finger pattern or chord? Thank you! I have the Travis finger picking figured out! am getting pretty good with the rest of the song, just can't get that Bb chord to sound anything close to music. suggestion other than "practice"?
Hi Tina, that's great that you have the Travis picking pattern figured out! Bb is a difficult one and can take a while to play cleanly. Try to focus on your finger placement as close to the frets as possible. Pick the strings one at a time to figure out which one(s) aren't sounding great when you strum as you may need more pressure on particular strings.
One option is to strum only 3 strings and omit the 4th string which makes the chord shape a bit easier to play. If you're picking, then replace the 4th string notes with the 3rd string in the Travis picking pattern. With only 3 strings, an alternative to barring the first two strings would be index finger on the 1st string, middle finger on the 2nd string, and ring finger on the 3rd string. For me, barring with my index is easier but some players prefer to avoid barre chords.
I think all of the Bb chord shapes along the fretboard are quite challenging so I'd recommend sticking with this one and it's a great chord to have in your tool box because it's a moveable chord (up the neck starting on any fret). Thanks for the question and good luck with it! Over time it will get easier with regular practice 😉
Can you recommend a more lively or interesting strumming patter?
By the way, thanks for the awesome tutorial!
Sure! Try D D D U D U with downstrums on beats 1-4 and upstrums on the half beats after 3 and 4 😊
Travis pattern (4/4) - T/m, &; T, I;T, M; T,&.
my G chord sounds different, is it because my ukelele is concerto?
Hi María, thanks for the question. There isn't a G chord in this tutorial. I go over the chord shapes at 1:21 😊
@@LaraMarkowitzMusic Thanks Lara, sorry I meant G string
@@santolayacity Sounds like you probably have a high G string which can be swapped out for a low G. You can hear the difference in this short: czcams.com/users/shortsIF69nhXjc1k
@@LaraMarkowitzMusic thank you Lara
