- In the 1980s, The Cannon Group was beloved by action fans for their constant flow of B-action movies. The series that put them on the map was their classic Ninja Trilogy. Beginning with 1981’s Enter the Ninja with a badly-dubbed Franco Nero, 1983’s Revenge of the Ninja, which elevated the previous movie’s villain, Sho Kosugi, to the lead, was a smash. Today, it’s considered one of the best American-made martial arts movies. The series ended with the demented Ninja III: The Domination, which plays like a mash-up of Flashdance, The Exorcist and a Ninja movie. In this special episode of Reel Action, our man Travis Hopson takes a deep dive into the series and speaks with director Sam Firstenberg, who tells us about making Revenge and Domination with his frequent star Sho Kosugi.
Do you remember the Ninja trilogy? Let us know in the comments! If you haven’t seen the Ninja trilogy, you can find them streaming for free on TubiTV. They’re a lot of fun.

I even watched Lee Van Cleefs “The Master” as a kid. Couldn’t help myself
That show actually had some damned good moments.
Classic 😂
That show was awesome.
I have it on DVD. I think I found it on Amazon.
Loved that show.
I love Revenge of the Ninja as a kid. My brother and I would dress up as ninjas and re-enact the final rooftop fight
Same bro,the neighbourhood kids and I would do that, we'd climb on everyone's roofs 😄
I actually fell off a garage once, got winded badly!
We used to dress up and have Ninja fights with nunchuks, wooden swords and smoke bombs on the streets of SW Philadelphia. Lol I don't know how we avoided getting arrested.
same here...a group of us lived out in the country and we all had Ninja suits and would go on missions LOL so much fun and being stupid
Me too!
I still love it as an adult
Revenge of the Ninja still holds the title for "Most diverse Street Gang" as well, an accomplishment that is praised even to this very day.
Sho Kosugi, was my favorite Ninja a kid, and one of my favorite movies in long list of movies was "Pray for Death"!
Me too
I finally saw that movie in full after catching only bits and pieces of it on tv as a kid. I was surprised to see that it was NOT a Cannon production.
Agreed. He may have been the villian in these movies. But he was always my favourite. Plus, he promoted martial arts (even at that time) in magazines/media. So, people knew him outside his villian roles. where he was a really nice family guy :)
what a title. right there with seagal and the three word verb brilliance
I was a 12 year old kid and I was obsessed with these Movies lol
Revenge of the Ninja.. Grew up with this movie in the 80's. Ninja films were on every shelf in the video shop back then! Great memories.
I grew up on Canon Ninja movies, that’s how I ended up this way!
You became a ninja?
So I assume your awesome then?? 😎
Lol! 🤣
same
Revenge of the Ninja is the best ninja movie to ever come out of the 80s. THE BEST!!!
I think it is still the best ninja -movie. What is your favorite?
I saw that at the dollar theater in Phoenix Arizona I wasn't 18 when it was playing there, Sho Koshugi was my idea of the 80's Bruce Lee.
Revenge of the Ninja was great. Loved it as a kid.
Revenge of the Ninja is 10 outta 10 for me. I loved that movie as a kid.
The entire cast of Ninja III was amazing Sho Dicky and Hong are great wish they gave Hong a bigger part but it's completely BA all around greatness in fact I'm going to rewatch it tonight 🎥🍿
Revenge of the Ninja is a special movie if you ask me. Action packed and amazing stunts!
Great vid. Ninja 3 the Domination is a Masterpiece 10/10. I love that movie so much. It's the first one I saw in the series. Sho Kosugi became my ultimate hero as a kid and Dickey was forever my dream girl. Such a cool f'n movie. I always dreamed of finding a cool cave with Ninja weapons. I love that movie so much.
Love all three films, but Revenge of the Ninja is my absolute favorite of the trilogy. And of course...i friggen love Cyborg too lol
Revenge of the Ninja was filmed in my home town, Salt Lake City. My sister was friends with the guys that fought Sho on the playground and she met him as well. My science teacher was a rock climber and he was the one who climbed the outside of the building, standing in for Sho.
Revenge is still one of my favorite movies and I still have the shuriken I bought after I saw the movie as a kid. Most importantly, I wouldn't be the martial artist I am today without Sho Kosugi.
Sho kasugi is so underrated the man is a legend so glad that he’s made a slight comeback with tiny ninja boom in the early 20 teens and is recognized for his amazing stunt work and choreography
For my fellow GenXers.... these ninjas (literal ninjas, not a substitute for the N-word) got us ready for Scorpion and Sub-Zero.
Cannons ninja series was my childhood 👏
So glad to see you cover it
The Ninja saga and American Ninja movies were the Marvel movies for us 80s and 90s kids 😂👌🏻
Haha! When I would spend the weekend at my grandpa’s place when I was a little kid, these were rented from the local video store and waiting for me when I got there. Man, the 80s was such an oddly amazing time to be a kid.
Thanks for the awesome nostalgia trip!
I love the ninja movies when I was a teenager , I can honestly say I haven't seen them since the 90s. I did enjoy ninja assassin from a few years back my only gripe with it was the frantic quickshot camera work.
No shame when it comes to DOA I watched it twice last week I love that film it's really good fun and Holly Valance is in it 😁
The cannon movies are interesting is how they became terminally unhip in the 90s/2000s, but have become retro cool again over the last decade.
"Chinese karate battles" says just about all you need to know about how much dude actually knew about what he was basing his movies on.
I have all these classics on VHS & DVD...I watch these from time to time 😊
Sho Kosugi was a legend!!!
Is*
But I got ya bro 👍
🥷
I remember another Ninja TV movie back in the 80s titled "The Last Ninja" starring Michael Beck and the late Mako.
Grew up on these awesome movies. Still love them & other films by Cannon Group Golan/Globus.
RIP Steven Lambert
If i ever become insanely rich i want to do a sequel to Domination and BEG Sho Dickey and Hong to star in it. Sorry I've been on rant but this film is my all time favorite film EVER 😍😂
When I was a little puppy back in the 80s i used to love watching old kung fu flicks on samurai sunday
Those ninja movies were a blast to pick out and rent from the local video rental stores.
Enter the Ninja was my favorite movie. I watched that movie countless times. Revenge of the Ninja was my close second.
Revenges theme song is 🔥 brings back memories
I watched and loved all of these action films of the 1980
This is why I like ninja movies, it's the storyline behind it as of the actor that best suits the roll of it,we need more ninja movies out there like it!!!!!
I'll never look at a V8 cocktail the same way thanks to Lucinda Dickey.
Sho' you right!
Revenge of the ninja and pray for death are great movies. I didn't think Ninja assassin was that bad.
I loved ninja III as a kid. Just last night I did a search because I saw breakin 2 on Max. Reminded of ninja III I decided I wanted to watch it and then I realized I had no idea about the trilogy and did a search. Then today your video pops up. Big brother is watching. Lol. Thanks. Loved the bideo
Pray for Death was my favorite. Maybe because Sho was the good guy, and had a badass helmet.
Loved these movies as a kid
Thank you for this amazing video on the most enjoyable Cannon films from my childhood! Loved the Firstenberg interview. It's great to see the enthusiasm and scrappy nature of Cannon deliver some of the best genre films that would never be made again.
Fantastic, very nostalgic as well! Thank you!
Love Revenge and Domination, it was awesome to see Sho Kosugi in Ninja Assasin too.
Man this is awesome! I remember being obsessed with Ninjas when I was a kid.
These movies were a much-cherished part of my tweens and teens, and got me started on a life-long fascination with ninjas and enhanced my already strong love for the martial arts in general, as well as action cinema featuring martial arts.
I could honestly take or leave "Enter the Ninja," but "Revenge of the Ninja" is among my all-time fav martial arts/ninja films produced during the heyday of the ninja craze during the '80s, much more so than "American Ninja" (which I also have a nostalgic fondness for). "Ninja 3: The Domination" was an interesting curiosity for the mash-up of genres, especially since I also loved films featuring supernatural horror. It had great martial arts scenes, and its opening sequence featuring the evil ninja mystic killing those rich people on the golf course and then fighting the police was awesome to behold.
Though it isn't mentioned here, as it was released by Trans World, not Cannon, I also loved "Pray for Death," which compliments these Cannon releases quite well, and which many consider the last truly great ninja film made during the peak of the "ninjamania" phenomenon during the '80s, and also the last stellar ninja film starring Sho Kosugi before his films began going downhill with turkeys like Kosugi's "9 Deaths of the Ninja", which made the awful attempt to inject a comedic tone into a ninja film (Kosugi is a great martial arts actor, but he is no Jackie Chan, who is talented at mixing humor with martial arts action). Nevertheless, I also liked "Rage of Honor," a Kosugi action film from later in the '80s, but it certainly did not compare to the trilogy from Cannon and the aforementioned 1985 entry from Trans World.
My dream Blu-ray would be one that had the Ninja Trilogy from Cannon with Trans World's "Pray for Death" included. Those four films are what made the ninja craze of the '80s great.
Snake Eyes? Storm Shadow was the one that got me and my friends into ninjas as well as Sho Kosugi.
Ninja 3 is my favorite B movie ever..
Revenge of the Ninja and part III, awesome! Another “ninja/kungfu” flick that is nice is Ninja in the Dragon’s Den.
SHO KUSOGI - greatest movie-ninja of all-time !!! i love all he's movie's and he's SHURIKEN !!!
thank you for this i loved the 80's Ninja movies back in the day as a teenage kid
Canon’s King Solomon’s Mines is great fun too, and boasts a marvelous Jerry Goldsmith score. (As well as a young Sharon Stone) 😮
I will say that 9 Deaths of the Ninja was laughably bad even by Canon standards. Hated it with a passion. But Revenge of the Ninja is by far my favorite! Prompted my purchase of my first ninja outfit in the 80's!!! Wore it till it fell apart. LOL. Although later I did train in battojutsu so I have that going for me. Which is nice. LOL.
I think 9 Deaths was Kosugi on his own. Cannon wasn’t responsible :)
Ninja III is one of the greatest films of the 80s. Hands down, no debate.
Such a unique film, one part Flash Dance, one part The Exorcist add little bit slasher fiction + Ninja = Ninja 3 The Domination
American Ninja 1 and especially 2 made my childhood. Don't blame you for the DOA love. Jaime Pressly was a goddess in that movie.
Sho Kosugi was one of the best in in these old 1980s ninja movies especially in pray for death
I love ninja movies
Revenge is my favorite one.
Had to turn the volume up at 13:39 LOVE the Revenge Of The Ninja soundtrack.
My childhood, when the video rental was a kid's escape. My 5th grade teacher took my martial arts magazine away, during free time. Then I got a stupid lecture about weapons and violence.
That sucked lol
Sho Kosugi was the most legitimate looking and acting ninja ever. The man epitomized what a real ninja fought like and represented. So was the Ninja Enforcer played by Richard Norton and the head ninja played by Tadashi Yamashita in Chuck Norris' The Octagon.
I played in the pit orchestra for Jordan Bennett’s show several times(Secord in Ninja III). Super nice guy. He’s so funny; I’d have to look away to concentrate on the music. I got a few Sho stories out of him too.
Still have throwing stars I bought in the 80s as a kid. 😂
I've never seen Revenge of the ninja somehow. Them clips are fkn insane! Will be finding this to watch ASAP
Free on Tubi! Each movie is self-contained - a very loose trilogy. Start anywhere.
These movies had a profound impact on me.
Now I own 2 screen used Sho Kosugi swords .
Ive done some videos of my Kosugi items if youd like a look.
I got my Ninja badge... I'm still a catlike killer with a black suit and a cool sword!
Now help me out of this chair!
Revenge of the Ninja was my favorite but really loved Enter the Ninja also. The first two American Ninja films were great too. Didnt care much for Ninja 3.
When it comes to American Ninja, I think 1 and 4 are the best. Watched all of them again couple of years ago.
One of my favorites all three of the Sho Kasugi ones
Cannon were something special. Watch the documentary about the rise and fall of Cannon. Hilarious watch.
They still made a lot of good memories like these Ninja movies for example.
One of the best docs IMO. The hilarious thing is Golan-Globus also did their own doc to beat it to theaters - the Go Go Boys (which isn’t half bad).
@@JoBloOriginals The documentary i watched were called "Electric Boogaloo" i think. 1980's movie industry would not be the same without Cannon. They were the VHS masters in that decade. I will always be a fan of Cannon.
@@JoBloOriginals I watched The Go Go Boys too now. It's better as it's more behind the scenes and shows more how Cannon worked.
Fascinating story and impressive what they were able to do. It's sad that their empire fell. Would be nice if they lasted 10 more years at least as we needed a "Indie company" like that.
Man as a kid this was near the level if star wars for me…everyone wanted to be a ninja and back then the costumes were so hard to find…. Well a good one at least
the 80s were the best time for action films. ninjas, Ahnold, JCVD, Aliens, Rambo... the list goes on. as long as there weren't boobies all over the place, my parents would let me watch anything :)
awesome video
Ninja 3 with Cindy Rothrock would have been even more awesome.
These movies are FREAKING PHENOMENAL 🫡💯!!!
Americans' fascination with ninjas actually goes back to the 1970s, possibly earlier. In the TV series Kung Fu, Kwai Chang Caine fights off a ninja.
Haven't seen this one, looks good though!
I remember some vhs covers at the video shop had a ninja 🥷 on the cover and then you would watch it and not see one ninja 😢
Yeah. There are unfortunately these bullshit "ninja -movies" where you are lucky if you see a ninja even once in an entire movie
We need a Revenge of the Ninja reboot starring Kane Kosugi as a good ninja and Sho Kosugi as the big baddie.
I remember when my friend got a VCR we stayed at Erols video renting Ninja Flicks
A Ninja does not kill, he eliminates for self defense purposes.
I love this movie, I've seen it a couple times.
Sick!
I believe Ninja 3 Domination deserves a remake.
Cool 👍
I love 80s movies...
You make the Greatest Damn Videos, you know that!!🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆
Did you really describe that woman as 'a real steamy number 2'? Brilliant
Salt in the eyes. Mr Fuji would be proud
The Domination was the first Ninja film I saw. I was 9 😂
Ninja Assassin in 2009 directed by the Wachowski brothers was pretty good too with Sho Kosugi in it as the Head of the Ninja Clan.
They were one of the producers not directors
Best ninja movie ever made 👍
Jep. Revenge of the Ninja.
Ninja Assassin was a fitting finish to this genre.
Well that was come back to the my youth as kid growing in 80s even in Eastern Europe that was my favorite movies. But we have a honorary mention another western legend Lee van Cleef in his last act was Ninja in series calls Master Sho was villain name Okasa to bad only one season was made.
I thought it was Chuck Norris' The Octagon that gave audience taste of ninja. When ninja started to wane, I remember Gymkata...this weird movie abour a martial arts gymnast.
Ninja!!! Come out Ninja!!!!!
me as a kid .......30 years later me as a NINJA......
i only seen ninja III due to the popularity and of course american ninja one and two. i cant wait to watch and own all of these. i need all that wu tang kung fu stuff too
Revenge of the Ninja is best of these. And when it comes to American Ninja, 1 and 4 are the best ones.
Of all things Cannon cared that Nero did not sound like he was from Texas.
Sho is a legend. If Canon would have just made him the lead of a trilogy and have it actually relative to each film he would have been like a Jackie Chan. But no they were like lets make this white girl a zombie. Wtf.
Someone should tell Golan there’s no such thing as “Chinese Karate”
only a ninja can call another ninja ninja
Only a ninja can sneak up on another ninja
He's Got a ninja ! I want a ninja ! where's my ninja ?
