How do you spot a Wild Woman onscreen? Rarely the protagonist, she tends to be a side character having kick-ass adventures on her own. Or this too-independent woman might come across to other characters as a cautionary tale, showcasing our shared anxieties about a truly free lifestyle. But at her core, the Wild Woman represents individuation, and our primal desire to live fully and freely as our authentic selves. Here’s our Take on the Wild Woman and what happens when she takes center stage, bringing us along on a journey of radical self-discovery.

Another thing I've often seen is the trope of the man who lives in solitude. He's often labeled a 'lone wolf' or a wise hermit. The female equivalent of the man who is sick of the oppressiveness of societies is the crazy old lady or the evil witch of the woods. Basically men are admired and women are shunned for deviating from society
Women are shunned if they want to get married too, dusty men say that women only want to marry for money and being provided, and if they don't accept to marry a man that cannot provide well for them, they are deemed as gold diggers.
Lone wolf's are cool in specific instances but after that dude hella awkward. And the wise hermit is a looney. But everyone knows they aren't woman
This are "crazy old dudes" who are useful in the specific instances. Most of the time they make some mention to his to man is not all the way there. Also more often than not a man sexuality is creepy unless they look sexable.

It’s weird to me that a woman whose independent and doesn’t marry is considered most likely to be gay. It is still defining her by her romantic partners rather than her just being in the world.

Yes! 100%. Society forces romantic relationships, regardless of orientation, as a norm. It's so limiting and frankly irritating.
Damn if you didn't take the words right out of my mouth. We've already identified her independence, need for freedom and strong sense of self. Yet somehow, we can't apply those concepts to her romantic life.

But I am kind of tired of always being put into a box of being a lesbian. I think it’s important to show girly lesbians and straight tomboys. Gotta break the stereotypes because people are far more complicated than their gender.

@@dorothymontrose6371 I have a great example: when they took Buttercup (the only non feminine Powerpuff and only one to have a love interest) a lesbian in the live action. You also have the badass vampire in Castlevania. And basically everywhere. Maybe you watch a lot of Young Adult stuff so you’ve seen the tomboy straight a lot, but I don’t watch a lot of that so, I haven’t really seen it.
I don't know, this trope makes me sad. More than an archetype it is treated as an stereotype. Being single, independent and female doesn't automatically make you gay. Why do female warriors have to be seen as one dimensional lesbians? Why can't they be asexuals? Or just strong women who are the perfect match for a strong man? I don't think we should watch a strong woman and automatically assume anything about her. You don't see a wild horse and think "oh, it's gay" or "oh, it's straight". It is just WILD.

This is so cliche but I have an Aunt that's like this. She never married and doesn't have kids. Everytime I hear from her she's in another country, living it up with new friends and men. And she's happier than her sister, my mother and all other married women I know.

Literally how I'm trying to live life. I have a husband which I never expected, and he's my biggest cheerleader/partner in crime. It's led to us having an "unconventional" household and a loving wild marriage. He describes me as "you're a wild horse, you can't be tamed and will kick anyone who tries to. All I could do was leave out some food and hope that some day you'd let me get close, but I'd never want to enclose you in a gate; not that you'd allow it." I definitely never planned on getting married or living with someone but also never wanted to live alone forever. And holy crap did I get lucky in finding someone who supports and cheers for me to remain true to myself.

I just became an aunt and you can bet that I am going to be the cool aunt. Not to brag but I am the ONLY woman in my entire family who chose not to marry or have kids.
It will be nice when the wild woman can be just that, wild and complete unto herself, without the assumption of being secretly gay since she doesn’t place high value in romantic relationships.
Well the romance between Xena and Gabrielle wasn't only subtext. The writers found ways to avoid censorship while still confirming it. Their reincarnations make out after remembering each other, on screen, then are seen living as a married couple, on screen too. There's a sleeping beauty trope as Xena wakes up Gabrielle, her explicit soulmate, with a kiss. They kissed without plot reasons (season 2, "The Quest").
They were also repeatedly asked "Are you two lovers?" by that tabloid TV reporter in the episode "You Are There" of season 6.
Yeah, the “queer coding” in Xena was as overt as queer coding could ever possibly get.
Some straight people still missed it though. Man, I kinda feel sorry for those straight people- maybe they don’t see any deeper into stories because they’ve never had to, but it means they miss out on a lot of depth and meaning.
@@katherinemorelle7115 I generally don't attribute it to inability to detect the subtleties so much as willful ignorance. If these straight people read the subtext properly, I don't think they'd enjoy the cleverness, to say the least.

But in 2021, I don't think anyone could watch the entire show and deny they were a couple. The text is explicit too many times for that, it would be denial.

I am not 100% sure Katniss counts,all she did was more in order to protect her loved ones (though she did have a rebellious streak) but i think Joanna fits the trope better if we are talking about the HG

Merida from Brave is probably more "wild" than Elsa from Frozen, I'd say. But I'm pretty big on "wild hair" being a tell tale sign :P
One of the most popular characters on Orphan Black was Helena, the "wild" clone who was also the scariest because she was killer. There's a fine line between "wild" and "crazy" that would be interesting to explore. (Harley Quinn? Killing Eve's Villanelle? Cruella?) Helena grew up practically feral, so that gets into the "Wild Child" trope (do it!) and how the term "wild" when referring to many people, even cultures, is kind of a pejorative- evoking something *dangerous* or that one should exercise caution around it.

Orphan Black is so cool. Very underrated show. It has great female characters. Tatiana Maslany is the queen of acting.
I would call Sarah a wild woman as well. She's very punk and street-smart. No one can pin her down. One of the examples why I don't agree with the take that the 'wild woman' is necessarily connected to nature. Love Helena as well. Her and Sarah are my favorites. (Maybe I have a type.)
The only problem I have with this is it doesn't seem to acknowledge the many heterosexual women who are choosing to remain unmarried nowadays.
3:27 I don't think these wild women can really be considered unfeminine when a lot of them fit society's idea of a feminine woman (thin, white, pretty, with short, but not too short hair). It seems like being a wild woman is only acceptable and admirable if you meet these requirements.
It's like they are allowed to be transgressive....but only up to a point.

Because a lot of these women are still “feminine”. I dont think the whole trope is about being a tomboy or butch. Also we already know the problems with film in portraying ppl within their own narrow box considering who a lot of these directors are. I meet women like this I’m real life and they look like any size, any sexual orientation, any style.

Artemis is my favorite greek goddess. I used to think it was sad that she never had a love interest but she had her friends. She was free. Never had to grow up and deal with the pitfalls of womanhood. I imagine a modern equivalent would have her living in a tiny house driving across the country with some pets, making friends and doing what she wants

I am a heterosexual wild woman, when I was younger I thought that I was gay but I’m not but because I was wild, free and independent and didn’t have a boyfriend people always thought I was attracted to other women and made me doubt myself. I think it’s difficult to frame a wild women in a heterosexual relationship because there is a lot of social expectations in the role of wife and mother and that includes a lot of sacrifice and putting others first for the most part, something a wild woman has trouble doing since it makes us feel trapped. It’s true we love fiercely and that’s why we protect and give endlessly, just don’t ask us to give that fire and sense of self that make us feel alive.
Couldn’t you be a wild cool mother/wife. You don’t have to give up yourself to raise a family. You don’t have to be a “man-hater” to be a wild woman. But you shouldn’t let a man try to control you and tie you down either

I always thought that people who do what they want despite being seen as lame or uncool are the coolest. When someone is trying to be cool, it is pretty obvious to me and makes me perceive them as lame. So you might be cooler than you think :)
Well, i’ll break this whole positive replies to say that she’s probably not gonna be cool and rich.
I cried while watching... I have no words. The wild woman that lives in our hearts is so constantly crushed by civilization, it's our job to take good care of her, as the precious treasure she is.
I think my favorite “Wild Woman” trope character would be San from Princess Mononoke. She’s a warrior Princess who was raised by wolves and fights to defend the forest from humans who are trying to destroy/pollute it. She’s such a badass character who’s also shown to have a loving, gentle side and her own flaws as well. And I like how she and Ashitaka are never forced into any love triangle like in most movies. They instead remain good friends who respect each other and I think that’s a really great example of portraying platonic relationships between main male and female characters.

It’s been surprising to me throughout the years how longstanding and pervasive the trope is in so much classic and pop culture.
Do you throw 1920s style cabaret performances and balls in your Victorian style mansion outfitted with a bowling alley, disco, water slide and room for your exotic animals with your favorite being your tiger? While you dress in half fur and faux fur outfits, wearing a fedora speaking with a 1930s mid-Atlantic accent and a cigarette on a stick in hand. When you get exhausted or frustrated you throw a tantrum and fall into a chair in a loud melodramatic style. And you whisk your nieces and nephews onto random adventures to faraway countries in your broken down truck or horse and carriage with a chauffeur sitting next to you?
Why can’t Elsa just be asexual/aromantic? Or simply not interested in a relationship? Why does being single and happy that way = queer coded in people’s eyes?

Agreed. When the fan theory that Elsa is gay first started floating around, I rolled my eyes. Like, for once, can we just have a story where a woman focuses on herself because she wants to find herself? And can Hollywood writers, in 2021, PLEASE start writing explicitly gay characters? The LGBTQ community deserves so much more than having representation of it only in just fan theories.

yes but the other 2 unmarried childless goddesses did not represent the "wild woman". Athena is the goddess of war, wisdom and civilised world (plus she also sides with patriarchy), Hestia is the goddess of the hearth, spirituality and all things home.

“The wild woman” trope seems like something created by people who just couldn’t understand women that are far more emotionally mature than those around them. It seems like a lot to do with trauma or literally just being in authentically themselves.
I feel like it was just society at large and not “the patriarchy” that didn’t want Elsa freezing everything in sight - and honestly it’s best not to use powers like that until you get control of them.
I have been deeply studying the wild woman archetype for the last year. The book, Mysteries of the Dark Moon, by Demetra George, was a breakthrough read for me and helped me with better understanding Women Who Run With the Wolves. I think the wild woman is still misrepresented, as Diana is not the only one, and is one of the more gentle versions. I think Lilith is the true embodiment of the wild woman, as she is not accepted like Diana, but misunderstood, ostracized, and condemned.
I read that book: Women who run with the wolves. It uses myths and stories to tell us about our inner strengths.

Many characters of mine are Wild Women. One of them a mouthy former 1950s housewife who is a progressive Irish Catholic who raised her Boomer daughters and Millennial granddaughters to live authentically and unapologetically.
I have seen Bridget Jones considered a Wild Woman but she is a passive character, having things happen to her, I think that her embarrassing moments are the result mostly of other people's control. Her friend Shazzer, like Miranda from Lizzie McGuire, is one.

Could you please do a analysis on Ancient Greek god mythology in the media, in how the original stories explained ideas of the time, and how different adaptations of the Ancient Greek god's have been presented in various art forms. Maybe do an episode looking at each of the most represented gods. Maybe starting with Persephone; Hades; Aphrodite; Athena and Artemis.

However it would be interesting to hear about more of the Greek gods in how they are presented throughout media and culture. A analysis on Persephone would be really interesting, or Hestia who is never ever represented even though she was one of the 12 gods of Olympus. And it would be especially perfect for The Take as Ancient Greek god mythology are quite popular currently on TikTok, maybe from Percy Jackson, Lore Olympus and Hadestown!

Elsa's father wasn't scared of his daugher powers because he was a patriarchy, he was totally fine with them until she almost killed Anna because it traumatized him as well as Elsa because dealing with trauma is a massive part of both movies' stories. He's not at any point antagonized or shown as a bad person so claiming he's a patriarchy is... pretty bad specially in context of Frozen 2 that redeemed both parents and showed in more human light. He's just a human being who allowed his trauma to take over and hurt people he loved, basically a mirror to Elsa. To say he's this movie version of patriarchy is to say patriarchy might be flawed but is good actually and that's bullshit
Also i find it funny how they claim Anna is sibling that is all about romance just to add in next sentence that Elsa should also care about romance. No need to push amatonormativity on every character.
It also frustrated me to no end that people assume Elsa is lesbian just because she has no boyfriend. Why can't she be single and be happy or she may has no interest in romantic relationship at all, as both movies seem to suggest.

THANK YOU! i usually like their videos but this idea of villanizing elsa’s father into the category of “the patriarchy” felt a little lazy with lack of critical thinking. while, yes, there are characters who fit into that category, elsa’s father as a caring protector in a disney kids film which wouldn’t take on such a complex topic, is not an example. also not everything needs to be boys vs girls, let the “wild women” have their own spotlight and voice without needing to be hurt in some way or put into a romance that isn’t necessary, they are their own people separate from that

I fell in love with Xena when I was about 36 and my marriage of ten years was on the rocks. I still think she’s a fantastic character - I think people (but particularly women and girls) of all ages fell in love with Xena - those who didn’t fall for Xena fell for Gabrielle or Callisto lol! Man I loved that show!

I just realised that a friend of mine who always romanticises herself and the way she (according to herself) appears to others, she talks about herself like she’s the main character in a movie. Let's not forget that Zeus raped Calysto, she was blamed for it and then she was killed by Artemis. It's interesting to see that paradox between freedom and still serving as the gatekeeper and conforming to the social mores and patriarchy.
@CHAD MASTER 4 LIV I actually have written two to three comments explaining everything and this part was just the last part of my comments, but somehow, it was not published. I don't know if CZcams is messing with me, erasing my comments, I don't know. Anyway, it has something to do because the wild women can also be used as a tool for patriarchy and that's why it's important to not use her as the "girl who isn't like the other girl" and not oppose her to women that might be different. Also, we can't forget that goddesses, even though the myths don't have an author, their transcriptions do and the transcriptions were made by men and through the male gaze.

Fair critique. Also it would be nice if a straight lady could be a wild woman without being labeled as queer, but I guess straight people get enough representation already so it's whatever.

One, gross, two, we don’t need to ostracize people based on the sexuality they have no choice in in order to make ourselves feel more included. We can share space without putting each other down.

Some exist, but still with more prejudice than the wild woman. It comes with angry woman. I agree with you, better representation needs to be had. Though, I'd say Moira from the Handmaid's Tale is a good start. I respect her a lot.

I liked Greek mythology too, and my fave was Athena becouse she's the smart goddess, but I didn't become like her.

While I still have a problem with outing dead celebrities without their consent and their family's consent, I am drawn to the wild woman because even though I am not marginalized by my gender and gender identity, I am drawn to those who live freely and the wild woman represented and celebrated here is a reminder.
Miss Fisher in Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries is a show that centers the "wild woman" and absolutely does not tame her by the end. And she's canonically in her 40s/50s, which is delightful. She's a really enjoyable character to watch in a fun, mostly silly show. Unlike a large proportion of wild women, she's not really queer-coded, and her relationship with her male co-lead is integral, and one of the sweetest aspects of the show.
So I'm half Wild Woman; half Weird Girl. Cool.

Despite this take on MCU's Captain Marvel, I still find it was disappointing character writing. Even when Captain Marvel is a guy, the storyline itself is not interesting. Xena is much better as main character. Even Valkyrie's background story is much more interesting.
Edit : if I want to tinker Captain Marvel's story, I'll add a scene : Carol was implanted with false memory that her power went out of control and destroy a planet because of her inability to control her emotion. That way, it's more reasonable for Carol that Kree tell her to control her emotion.
Captain Marvel has a lot of potential as a character, I hope the second one is better written.
As a longtime reader of the comics, I can attest that Carol Danvers has been a hit or miss character, depending on the writer. Marvel’s editorial keeps trying to shove her into the flawless “feminist paragon” box, when she’s at her best as a flawed, almost anti heroic foil to other characters.

I mean, I'm really interested on what she was doing during her absence on Earth. What did she do? how many planets has she gone to? I kinda wish they will continue the Kree vs Skrull storyline that may analogy to Earth's World War.
I haven’t liked Captain Marvel in anything. Whether female or male. I’ve always find them to be a boring character and has never had the moment to really stand out.
I feel like something between a wild woman and a weird girl. While I learned to enjoy my own company fairly young, I’m happy to have found a supportive sidekick to my craziness-my husband. It’s a shame that tv often portrays independent and strong women cannot settle down in order to be so. You just need a partner that understands and respects your spirit, but that should go for everyone.
Urgh so you’re suggesting that because a woman doesn’t follow the mainstream path, that makes her gay? I think that is a limited, black and white perspective. While I do note that this is a possibility, it’s not always true. I suggest opening up to more than two versions of women.

If you feel like you identify with the wild woman trope, you should read "Women Who Run with the Wolves" by dr Clarissa Pinkola Estés. It tells more of her myths and stories from different cultures.
There’s this one character I think of often as a great positive role model for both men and women. She can express her feminine side, does the work of men, she’s very intelligent, cooperative, self reliant, caring. Occasionally she’ll have a man in her life but not for long. Basically she’s married to her job though a few episodes showing the future says that she wants to settle down at some point.
That character is Samantha Carter from the Stargate series as portrayed by Amanda Tapping.

Thank you for showing Katherine Hepburn in Desk Set. It’s the first of her movies I ever watched, how I always think of her (physically) and still my favorite.
Someone commented "Why isn't Arya Stark in this list" and I was wondering too, she would fit perfectly in this trope! An then I realised.... It's because they needed characters to put under the 'queer coding' category (more like queer baiting 🙄) and Arya is not gay. The point of this analysis should be that women can be strong, wild and independent and not need a partner regardless of their sexuality but they made it seem that if you're like that then you're probably gay...it's a really forced "reading between the lines".
Besides most of the focus on these stories is about the girl or women finding themselves or just being comfortable in being themselves and this doesn't necessarily has to involve their sexuality. The focus is on them and not what partner they could have, especially when they don't want to, so it doesn't really make sense speculate about it. (Obviously Valkyrie is a different case because it was in explicit in the comics)

Is it weird that certain parts made me really emotional? I never saw Frozen. Her father's words here, whew! Ive never really fit anywhere but I actually relate to this soo much. Ive always been a one woman army. I have great friends but at the core of it all, I work hard to stay true to who I am and spend time alone to constantly grow.
I wish I was a Wild Woman, but I think I just don't have social skills:/ Maybe there's a thin line between "cool aunt everyone looks up to" and "weird aunt no one wants to invite anywhere".

I have an aunt who is the perfect example of a "cool aunt" - she rejected marriage (my mum told me she has left some broken hearts along the road) and lives just for music and to travel the world whenever she has money for it.
I love her to bits, even if she drives me mad with her attitude sometimes (she tries to boss everyone and wants things only her way like a real Aries which conflicts with my Leo disposition, lol).
I remember watching Xena when I was in junior high and I never enough noticed the lesbian subtext I must have thought that was how female friendships were. It didn't help that the show was seen as having largely a male fan base.

I think I found my trope. For some reason I've always been obsessed with having complete freedom and despite being grateful for my friends and family I still prefer traveling by myself. I also want to live in the woods and just be everyone's cool aunt.
