  • Sandy shares her updated set of violet growing rules called the “Ten Propers” - a system she learned many years ago in her violet club. She explains each of these ten important cultural practices and adds tips, especially for newer growers. In addition, viewers will learn about the different sizes and types of African violets and some basic tips on propagating leaves. Sandy’s best tip? Limit your collection to a number that is manageable for your situation.
Sandy Skalski started growing African violets more than 30 years ago. While 9 months pregnant with her daughter, she accidentally found the African Violet Club of Burlington County show as she walked through the mall. She has been a member ever since. Some of her award-winning plants have been featured in the African Violet Magazine. Sandy writes the beginner column for the African Violet Magazine called, ‘Your First Violets.’ She is a Senior Judge. She has retired after 35 years as a chemical engineer and now has more time for violets and her butterfly garden.

You always used to see violets for sale around Mother’s day in the UK. Sadly you hardly ever see them these days. I think they are beautiful💕

Thank you Sandra for a very well presented program. I have grown violets since the 70's, and if i can learn one new thing from a presentation I am delighted. I'm going to try your egg crate method for my garden club members, as they seem to have a problem growing leaves in a bag.

If you live in warmer area, where there are little lizards and gecos, don’t use sticky cards. Especially if your plants are out on a patio. You will trap more four legged creatures than insects. Plus lizards eat all kinds of insect pests, so don’t kill them!

This is the most thoroughly informative video I have found on CZcams on AV's. I learned so much and hopefully I can correct some of the problems I was creating without even knowing. I found this video right after ordering several sets of leaves from Lyndon Lyon, so I am starting out on a new batch and will hopefully do everything right this time. Thanks again for your time and dedication to making this video.

Thank you so much for sharing!! I've been able to successfully sprout babies from propagated leaves, but my original parent African Violets haven't bloomed in about two years!! I have them all in indoor greenhouses under grow lights but the leaves are all dark green!! I will be incorporating your great tips, hopefully they'll bloom soon!!😊🙏🙏

Do you have a video of examples of different problems to help identifying issues?

Hi Sandra. I’m in the UK. I love AV’s & your video is brilliant. But sadly we don’t have the products or the climate here that you have.
Do you have any tips or is it just not possible to grow beautiful violets like you have, here, without a greenhouse please?
I use a grow light but even with it really close, my plants reach up. The flowers are very small. I can’t get 7.9.5 fertiliser .. I’ve just got an AV fertiliser by Chempak. 12.36.14 with micro nutrients. Does that sound suitable please?
I also have a 20.20.20 again Chempak to dilute to maybe 1/4 or 1/8 strength.
Sorry for so many questions, there’s just no AV societies here to ask.
    Thank you Kind Regards Valerie
