  • I've grown my collection. There are so many blooms that I figured I would film this video. Somehow they all magically bloomed at the same time.
    These are the lights I use:
    Barrina Lights 12 inch (under all my shelves)
    amzn.to/3RahUPT
    Self-watering planters
    Adult Standard 5 inches (mature standard violet)
    amzn.to/3RbCFKW
    Small Standard (baby standard violet)

      They are pretty. If it is the one in the thumbnail of the video, that is one I found at Walmart.

    Whoa that is quite the collection! The datum on the lifespan of African Violets is 50 years, but I think that it is much longer than that. My Auntie, who has been tending to my Grandmother's violets since she passed, has just tossed out her plants. She mentioned that she just tired of them and put them in the garage to die. Oh well..
    I mentioned to her that there are people "out there" that would gladly take the plants off her hands. But, too late. Slowly, guilds, societies and clubs are returning. There is "something" about meeting once a month to talk plants, showcase, then buy/swap that is better than box stores and online. I imagine that it will soon be dicey in our litigious world.
    I look forward to viewing more of your content. Thanks for sharing your journey.

      There are many groups that meet monthly and talk about African Violets. I have heard of people "refreshing" violets and getting them to live 50 years. I do love violets, and many others would have loved caring for them.
      Additionally, there are some in the AVSA magazine considered "Violets most wanted." It is a list in every AVSA magazine where they are looking to preserve varieties. Most older collections often consist of these varieties and are highly sought after to preserve and continue that variety. Sadly these varieties are often lost to time.

    I've watched a lot of videos on African violets and yours is the best by far. The others just give the same generic info but you really know your stuff!! Thank you.

    I just got a couple of African Violets last year. I wanted purple ones like my grandma used to grow but have had a difficult time finding just an old fashion purple violet.
    We live in a kind of rural area and do not have a lot of places to buy plants. Our local Lowes is notorious for killing plants but I did get one dying violet from them that has a flower that is white in the center and purple on the outer part of the petal. It decided to live for me and it is pretty but not exactly what I wanted. I want one like what was first shown in this video with the yellow middle and darker purple petals. I have also looked online and those places seem to concentrate on the more fancy hybrids. I don’t care about it having a name.

      Try checking Etsy or Lyndon Lyon or Optimara.

      I picked up some non blooming plants on discount a few weeks back. Two of them are dark purple with a bright yellow. Would you have a pink one to trade?

    I think that I have the same red violet. It's an Optimara that I bought from Lowes. I wouldn't call it burgundy though. Red onions and red wine are burgundy. It's deep red. I also have the white and red violet. I would call that shade of red crimson.

      I trade on r/takeaplantleaveaplant, r/africanviolets, and with people on Instagram. I highly encourage using a P.O. box. I have one just for sending and receiving plants online.

    • @plantastix
      @plantastix  Před rokem

      They need fresh soil every six months, grow lights (Barrina linked in my bio), fertilizer and minerals (Shultz and super thrive), and grooming. I have many videos on violets where I discus how I care for them.

      @@plantastix thanks. I have ordered from Lyon with success. It's so tricky to know if you are getting disease free plants from unknown vendors these days. I shy away from Walmart, lowes etc because they are crammed together and look sick. You got some good ones.

    • @plantastix
      @plantastix  Před rokem +1

      @jman Thank you 😊 I did an unboxing video with the Lyndon Lyon order. I have ordered online twice the rest are trades from people online or friends irl.
      Most big box stores have plants that could use a little TLC. Unless it is a fresh shipment they typically look pretty bad pretty quickly.
