Learn how to think like Sherlock Holmes from the book "Mastermind" written by Maria Kannikova. From her analysis of Holmes' behavior, we can reverse engineer how he acts and thinks to be more like him. Deductive in nature, Sherlock hardly ever falls into the terrible thinking such as cognitive biases and logical fallacies. Learn how to not commit any biases or fallacies through pure practice and mindfulness. Metacongnition can help you understand your thinking faults and how to correct them. The three basic steps to thinking and acting like Sherlock are, to avoid fallacies and biases, to practice mindfulness, and to never stop learning. If you can accomplish these for the majority of your life, you will undoubtedly become extremely successful. Learning how to deduce, and deducing successfully can be very exhilarating and quite addicting. Learning to be mindful in your thoughts and applying mindfulness in your life can be super beneficial to your overall health and well being.

Actually, Sherlock doesn't use deduction, he used induction.
See deduction is reasoning from an infallible premise. The best examples here are numeric based. So if A>B>C, then A>C, no questioned asked.
However, in observing the world around you, and drawing conclusions, it's inductive based reasoning. And yes it's true, if you say, have a dog hair on your say, trousers, it doesn't mean have a dog. However, what Sherlock did do, is he would look for clusters that point to a probable conclusion, instead of just from a single piece of evidence.

    • @stefanrendevski1837
      @stefanrendevski1837 Před 7 lety +16

I think what Sherlock uses is called abductive reasoning, which is slightly different from induction.

I just read up on all 3 and I too think abductive reasoning describes best what Sherlock does.

In this book, Maria unpacked the mental strategies that lead to clearer thinking and deeper insights. She draws on 21st-century neuroscience and psychology to “illuminate Holmes’ most fascinating cases.” She writes at length on the scientific method of the mind, the brain attic, the art of observation, imagination, deduction and the importance of self-knowledge.
For me, this book is not easy to read (I didn’t read this book thru like most of my other books. I paused for about 3 months) but since my fascinated for Sherlock Holmes, fictional character created by Author Conan Doyle, is greater than the task of finishing this book, I finally did it. I read 'The Power of Habit' by Charles Duhigg and some parts of Daniel Kahneman’s 'Thinking, Fast and Slow' before and I found these books are almost similar to ‘Mastermind’ (or ‘Mastermind’ is actually similar with these other books). Some readers fairly commented that this book would be much better if she used a real character instead of a fictional character. I agree and disagree. I refuse to comment further. I suggest you watch Konnikova’s talks first on CZcams :)

I find that whenever I use them they can make a difference straight away. Just breathe in and out slowly and deeply and concentrate on it. You will feel the chatter in your mind diminish more and more the greater your concentration is. It is great for moments of anxiety

Pretty sure a violin, viola, cello and the larger double bass can have the same construction in different sizes. But it's not very smart nor common for a violin to have the end pin near the tailpiece. Something you would see on a cello or a bass. But you can't blame him, he also says "deducive". Pretty sure the word he's looking for is deductive.
These are smaller inaccuracies and doesn't question the integrity of the video because they're irrelevant.

I have Aspergers, and this seems very similar to how I react to external stimulii, problem solving and such. I can take an age deciding from a menu from correlating all of the various possibilities and which might be the tastiest choice.
One reason I think it's thought those on the spectrum have difficulty reading emotions is really that we have more difficulty determining between the general emotion (the one they want to show), the microexpressions and the spoken word.
Also, sometimes an environment, person or situation can instantly and unexpectedly become an incredible sensory overload, and can be either welcome or thoroughly undeirable.
I'd like to learn about some of the methods (CBT) I've heard can be used to help with social integration better (they're a new thing for me), as that's a segment of my life I think I could improve somewhat.

Well done video Practical Psychology... Few things- Sherlock Holmes is said to have deductive reasoning, then some correct that to inductive reasoning, but they're both wrong... Sherlock Holmes uses abductive reasoning (look it up) to solve the crimes... and he's not a high functioning sociopath either... He's a high-functioning moralist, whom has, but suppresses his feelings, and exhibits none of the major traits associated with sociopathy. I've even done a Y/T video myself on the subject. (check it out if you wish) Now Moriarity on the other-hand... TOTAL SOCIOPATH!!!

Thanks! I'm experimenting between 3-5 minutes, because I don't want a video to be too short that seems like a waste of bandwidth, but not long enough to lose attention. I'm glad you enjoyed :)

Benedict Cumberbatch, definitely. Great review btw. I've been always fascinated by Sherlock Holmes.
I have one request if it is possible. Kind of like a "tour" on what books you have cause I'm kind of curious about what you read aside from the books youve reviewed.
Hope I'm not asking too much! Looking forward to your next videos to learn more from you and have books added to my list to read in the future. Cheers!

Really interesting video, do you recommend reading the book? It really seems that you dug out most of the gold nuggets ;)

+LonelyBookaneer I would say if you had 30 minuted to read any book, this book wouldn't be at the top, there's quite a bit of analysis of Sherlock, and its not the most interesting at the beginning, but I liked explaining the topics :)

Love the video! Would be better if you had a more suitable choice of background music though.

Question: Does this book look into HOW to do these things or does it just tell you what to do? I'm thinking of purchasing it and would like to know before I buy.
