    How fitting that last song on last album is the blues with some soulful crooning thrown in. Beautiful.

    @ 1:22 The suggestion for the name actually came up during sessions for "Beck's Bolero" in '66. Jeff Beck had Page, John Paul Jones, Keith Moon (who was having issues with The Who), and Nicky Hopkins playing with him during sessions, and the thought of forming a group was bandied about, to which Moon commented that it would go over like a lead balloon/Zeppelin. Page stored the idea away and finally used it when The New Yardbirds were no more.

    I've always known that Zep was a band made of great composers and musicians, of great improvisation skill, but as I've listened to more and more reactions to their music, the one thing that really stands out is their energy and emotion, second to none. Plant's vocals here, especially at the end, case in point. You just don't find that level of emotion anymore.

    Led Zeppelin IS MOST DEFINITELY A BLUES BAND. An ACID ROCK BLUES BAND. Next up: In My Time Of Dying, When The Levee Breaks, Kashmir, In The Light - all have incorporated a bit if psychedelia as well.

    You can't classify LZ's music as just one type of genre. They covered different styles. They also did folky songs and even a reggae song. LZ never aimed to release singles precisely because they wanted to let the music breathe and allow for creativity and invention. The meaning of those lyrics is so obvious and it's not what the literalist thinks it is.

    • @LiteralistReactions
      @LiteralistReactions  Před 2 lety

      Doh, here... Sometimes our literalist, Dave, is being overly literal when he knows darn well there is likely a different meaning. He's not being showy for an audience, this is who he is in his every day life. That's one part of our friendship I find rather entertaining which is why I've convinced him to allow us to post videos on CZcams. For one thing, I find most reactioneers to be engineering a response to improve viewership and thus income. If you look at the videos we've posted thus far, you can see that there are two with barely a notice. This won't change as I'm VERY eclectic in my musical tastes.

    I dig your take on the daughter angle. It wouldn't be the first time Plant had done that. "The Ocean" is about her. I know "All of My Love" on this album is about his boy he lost to a rare sickness.

      You are so right. It was so common for songwriters in the '70s to refer to their woman as "girl" or "baby" or "child". The title line may have been inspired by his daughter, but the verses at the end are clearly about a woman. Same with "All My Love". The refrain may have been inspired by the loss of his son, but the verses make absolutely no sense being about a young son.

    Zeppelin has no genre. They started out as Blues but wanted to be something else above all others. Plant was always poetical and I would like to agree that you are on point.

    and they say ,the boys lost it by the time of this album ?...really :)

    • @LiteralistReactions
      @LiteralistReactions  Před 2 lety

      Doh, here... it's clear what they had lost was the sense of "family" within the band. You can blame everything from drugs, to money, to pressures, but they were no longer one cohesive unit working together toward a unified goal. John Paul Jones was alone in the studio when the bones of this track were laid down. Some people have a hard time with relationships, preferring to dump them rather than work on them in earnest.

    Led Zeppelin started (first 2 albums) heavily leaning into the blues along with a fair bit of folk rock and some psychedelic rock. The one thing about them is they could, and did, try their hand at practically everything up to and including reggae! No musical genre was beyond them. They were the best of the '70's and remain one of the most influential bands ever (in terms of influencing other musicians) for good reason. Each member was a GOAT. Each contributed heavily to the bands output, no one was there to "fill in".
    Great reaction guys, I especially like how Al Franklin guest appeared! LOL..... (I wonder if you have had that comment yet....)

    First, from my pedantic, obnoxious English prof's POV, lead is a metal. Led is the past-tense of the verb lead. So from a literalist standpoint, the band's name means the zeppelin is being led. First time I ever thought of it this way, TBH. Second, I don't understand how literalism plays into rock lyrics. 90% of these lyrics are figurative. Can you LEAD me to a video that explains what a literalist reaction is? (See what I did there?) I don't expect you to explain it to me here. All that being said, I'm intrigued. You guys are a fresh take. May I suggest early ELP for the classical music lover? Quite the rabbit hole, but it'll get all the synapses firing and the hair standing up on your neck.

    • @LiteralistReactions
      @LiteralistReactions  Před 2 lety +1

      @Kathy Ratino - John Doh here... We took your advice and have recorded ELP doing Fanfare. Look for that to post in the coming weeks. To explain Dave's literalism, he was raised to see things in black and white with no room for grey. Since that time, he has changed and sees things much more openly, but it is still his fun hobby to view things literally. He does it to create a discussion/argument (in the good sense) and encourage people to share their feelings. It's verbal fencing. So, grab your weapon and take a swing, he's a big boy.

    • @kathyratino962

      @@LiteralistReactions Fanfare is awesome. Of course, it's instrumental, so there's nothing to take literally. Anyway, looking forward to watching!

    Bonzo’s feel on this song is so very important that I’m not certain that any other drummer would’ve made this song tick the way it does. Look up Willie Dixon’s version of You Shook Me. The drummer here in this is where John and other young Brits got got their ideas. It’s all about “feel.”
