Many years ago (more than I care to remember) I used to go to a club in Camden Town called The Greenlands as I recall(it was situated in a side street called Greenland Street) and periodically they held a small talent competition. I rather fancied myself as a bit of a singer so one night I had a go and sang I'm A Moody Guy. To my astonishment I won and received a prize of £1.00 (in old money).I was able to treat my friends and myself to a good drink in the pub opposite (can't remember what it was called). Impossible to imagine nowadays. Ah, the memories that songs can evoke!
A truly remarkable story of a guy with a terrific voice who suddenly got the idea to dress in black leather put on a few junk rings and stick on some sideburns becoming an almost overnight superstar. Immensely popular and extraordinarily charismatic. Who doesn't remember Alvin Stardust from the 70's? But he was a great singer way before the fame and this was a terrific song I used to really like.
Met him a couple of years ago in a supermarket, nice friendly man. We talked briefly about early british rock and pop music, he said Johnny Kidd had the best voice of all in his opinion.
Mike James Those were the days at Kidderminster Town Hall in the 60's - Shane Fenton, Johnny Kidd (and Pirates), The Fourmost, The Merseybeats, Screaming Lord Sutch, who could ask for more?
I exchanged a couple of emails about his version of "Pretend" on Stiff. The guitar solo on it is to me the best guitar solo ever. Short, but memorable, it does the job and then gets out in time. Shane said the guy from Matchbox did it.
These guys appeared on Saturday club around 1961/62 and we're a household name, any act that got on Saturday club were, it had a huge audience. they were very popular live and had a couple of film appearances, only 3 or 40 top 40 hits though
Was living in Amsterdam from 70-73 and met up with Shane at the Bluenote club. He was hanging around with Rory Storm at the time who was DJing at the Bamboo Club (yes, despite his stutter!). Shane stayed a few nights and was great company. My mate (Peter Smith-Cullen) had a sister who had been a Fentone in Spain and that was how we got to know Shane, by barging in backstage and introducing ourselves. Never forget that time Shane it was a real laugh.
My very favourite record of the 1960s, didn't get so great a reception at Kidderminster Town Hall, but what do they know? Fantastic under-rated artist. Pity he had to re-surface as Alvin Stardust.
This was 1st single I ever bought. And what a sensational way to start a record collection! The 'b' side was fantastic too...... I recall me and Lemmy were singing that in the dressing room last year on the Motorhead, Damned, Girlschool tour. As you do.
I just came to listen to this song for the first time because I read it was the first record you owned! didn't expect to find your youtube channel in the comments haha brilliant!
+gavan peterson No, they weren't tone deaf in those days. They just had a greater range of great singers and music to choose from in those days - unlike these days when the 'singers' themselves are the ones who are tone deaf.
Alvin Stardust,Shane Fenton or Bernard Jewry R.I.P. FUE UN GRAN FANS DE BUDDY HOLLY. SHANE FENTON & THE FENTONES TIENE UNO DE MIS TEMAS FAVORITOS DEL ROCK & ROLL COMPUESTO POR JERRY LORDAN (QUE COMPUSO TAMBIEN TEMAS INOLVIDABLES PARA THE SHADOWS) . THE FENTONES FUE UN GRAN GRUPO CON EXCELENTES INSTRUMENTALES. DICHO TEMA NO PODIA SER OTRO QUE ``I´M MOODY GUY´´
When did Bobby Elliot play with the Fentones?I always thought the Fentones had a good sound.I don`t suppose they earned a decent living at it as they never had the "big" hit to sustain them. But a great sounding band(group!!!???)
Listen here look at me, look at me and tell me what do you see Without a word of a lie, before you wave me goodbye You will say I'm a moody guy I've got no friends, and if I had, well if I had, I know I'd treat 'em bad Sometimes I sigh and wonder why You will say I'm a moody guy Some days I'm happy and I let it show Some days I should've stay in bed I know Some days I feel so lonely; need someone to love me only Never seem to get that chance, never seem to find romance Must be sweet, better be good I'd fall in love if only I could But you pass me by And I can see in your eyes You will say I'm a moody guy Some days I'm happy and I let it show Some days I should've stay in bed I know Some days I feel so lonely; need someone to love me only Never seem to get that chance, never seem to find romance I said Must be sweet, better be good I'd fall in love if only I could, but you pass me by And I can see in your eyes You will say I'm a moody guy Now you will say I'm a moody guy Mmmm I can see in your eyes, you don't want me Ah oh those eyes
Typical Joe Meek era sound, this. Those early 6T's pre beatboom times have such optimistic sounds. One could almost sence the promise in the air, for better times.

GGGggeateSSS This Song
Listen here look at me, look at me and tell me what do you see
Without a word of a lie, before you wave me goodbye
You will say I'm a moody guy
I've got no friends, and if I had, well if I had, I know I'd treat 'em bad
Sometimes I sigh and wonder why
You will say I'm a moody guy
Some days I'm happy and I let it show
Some days I should've stay in bed I know
Some days I feel so lonely; need someone to love me only
Never seem to get that chance, never seem to find romance
Must be sweet, better be good
I'd fall in love if only I could
But you pass me by
And I can see in your eyes
You will say I'm a moody guy
Some days I'm happy and I let it show
Some days I should've stay in bed I know
Some days I feel so lonely; need someone to love me only
Never seem to get that chance, never seem to find romance
I said
Must be sweet, better be good
I'd fall in love if only I could, but you pass me by
And I can see in your eyes
You will say I'm a moody guy
Now you will say I'm a moody guy
Mmmm I can see in your eyes, you don't want me
Ah oh those eyes
One of the five real Brit rockers before the Beatles took over.
Rod Cladingbowl liked this one.
Wow! Great song and performance by Shane and the band! Does anyone know who played lead guitar?
