If this movie does well, I hope they make a Phantom Manor movie as well, as a sequel or a stand alone, either works. I just want to see that story on screen.
I said the EXACT same thing as you on the actual trailer video! Great minds ;) plus in my opinion the phantom manor has a scarier outer appearance too which I adore! Apparently Disney are wanting to make this a franchise like POTC… so maybe? Hopefully?

I'm actually kinda shocked by this trailer, because this movie actually looks pretty good so far. It has a lot of references to the ride and seems like an actual horror movie.
When I showed my partner without telling him what it was at first (he realised pretty quickly) he was like “is this a horror? It looks like a horror.“ it is pretty scary looking for a Disney film

Okay after I went over this trailer, again and again, I just realized that they may reference all the iterations of the brides in HM in this movie. This bride will no doubt be based after Constance's tendency to unalive her husbands, so she makes for a good antagonist. Since dear Connie had many weddings, then she likely wore different gowns through the years. The first appearance of the Bride is wraith-like/with glowing eyes- this is the 1st Bride/ "Beating Heart Bride" and it's close to her concept art too. The 2nd Bride that we see is rocking those pearls, referencing the current design of Constance. The last bride who comes down the stairs, references Melanie, the Phantom Manor's bride. Melanie's dress is usually pretty puffy but even if it's not directly her dress, the location of the Bride is telling as Melanie stands on the staircase looking out of the window in the load scene of the PM, and then later she is seen on the staircase looking into the manor's ballroom

2:53 I actually wonder if that ghost is supposed to be Elizabeth, a reference to the first Haunted Mansion movie, as she has the same dress, necklace, and gloves, and as Constance Hatchaway is usually portrayed with the more victorian style gown or poofy skirt and axe visual? They had two different hairstyles too so, i’m wondering if it’s two different ghosts or just two different gowns from her different marriages (which honestly would be terrifying to see her in a different gown every time)

Good interpretation but I don't know if we really a reference to that movie cause that didn't do the Haunted Mansion justice in my opinion.

I really appreciate the vanishing windows in the stretching room. I think Constance's wardrobe changes may have something to do with an increase in power as the movie goes on, starting out as the ragged faceless wight we see early on (and a reference to the OG bride) then probably the Blue Faced Bride that came after, and on until her final form on the stairs. Just a hypothesis, but it seems likely from what we see.
Also the 'pig portrait' is Hatchet Guy from the beginning, it's just a reference to the other changing portraits that go from ordinary to threatening over a series of steps.
Also, can I just say how much I love Mme. Leota's totally unhinged Egyptomania-inspired spiritualist outfit. 10/10.

That's what I was gonna say about Constance! It's got to be that she's becoming more powerful as the plot progresses and her wardrobe/historical bride version reflects that. Like, what if every time we see a close up of her she's got another string of pearls around her neck?

I think Leota is wearing variation of slavic (Russian/Ukranian) traditional dress.

0:40 I believe the shadow behind him is actually Ghost Host/The Hatchet Man. If you compare the axe that Constance(?) was holding while coming down the stairs to the hatchet that the ghost host was holding up in his portrait when they walked down the hallway, you can see that the hatchet in the shadow matches with Ghost Host's rather than Constance's. Also, I feel like the sillhouette dosen't quite match Constance's dress and head shape, not to mention the lack of a veil in the shadow as well

Soooo happy they're including so many references!! I really like how in the scene with the trees, the car is driving backwards like it's mimicking the doombuggy going backwards through the trees into the graveyard on the ride :)

I like parts of the 2003 HM movie and most of the effects have aged well...but tbh I really wish EM wasn't in the movie as a lot of his comedy takes away what could have been a good Haunted Mansion movie about kids trying to save their mom/solving the mansion's mystery. It was that weird time in the late 90s/00s where EM was just everywhere (esp in Disney Projects) and he plays the same character in every role (and sometimes he *is* every character....remember The Nutty Professor and all of the Klumps spinoffs?) , and he wasn't a good fit for this movie. And I think Disney was relying on EM's star power to draw people in for this movie. Which is a shame because only 5 mos prior we had the first PotC movie and it was frustrating to see that Disney was capable of doing a good movie tie-in for the park rides, when given a good cast, writing team who were fans of the original attraction, and director.

The amount of attention to detail that we’ve already seen from this trailer is incredible. These people making the movie are definitely fellow haunted mansion fans which is super exciting!
I absolutely love the inclusion of voodoo in the movie @5:50 is a reference to papa Legba who is the voodoo gate keeper to the spirit world. I wonder how big of a part his character will play.

I am really hoping that the characters coming to investigate the mansion (Owen Wilson, Lakeith Stanfield, Danny DeVito, etc.) are going to become haunts who join the mansion. Lakeith's frame/hat reminds me that he could become "Ezra", Danny could become "Gus"; they don't have to have the exact names as the HGs' names were fanon until Disney made them canon. Owen Wilson wielding the hatchet could be that he becomes the character many argue is the ghost host. Tiffany Haddish's character reminds me of the outfits worn by the actors who've portrayed Leota in the parks when she was alive (yes I know that JLC is Leota). So maybe this is going to be a "Sixth Sense" type movie where the ghosts do not realize that they are dead, and they're now investigating the mansion. I do think that maybe Constance's outfits could reference each of her gowns for each of her weddings. I love that the first time we see her, she looks like the original concept art for the bride,

The hitchhiking ghosts would be a cool sequel hook/cliffhanger! Also I get that it would not fit the tone of this trailer and possibly be at the climax of the movie, but I really want to see that ghost party! Ghosts slow dancing through tables please
The car scene is directly lifted from the ride. Where the doom buggies are traveling backwards as the trees look like they are lunging towards you.
Hope this movie turns out good 👍 would be nice to have more Disney attraction movies work as actual well made films besides just most of the Pirates of The Caribbean films

Judging by the writer, the director and current Disney I unfortunately have zero hope that it’ll turn out good. I had very high hopes for the Del Toro HM movie, but now with the director of “dear white people”, is that it? It’s going to be another Disney woke crap!
So glad you did this! I didn’t even think of the no windows no doors tease there but you got to admit it is very commendable how accurate they are staying with the source and adding more of a heavy horror story setting to it… just happy to see the hatbox ghost get his time to shine I just hope we will get some singing busts!
I have a theory as to why the characters in this movie might not do the classic trip of “just move away”.
You know the scene where the guy is watching tv, and his remote gets snatched by a ghost? Well I’m guessing that ghosts are going to follow all of them home (hence the famous line from the ride,) and the only way for it to stop is for them to somehow destroy the mansion or something like that.
Love the little detail of the ghosts faces coming out of the organ pipes just like the attraction.
I'm so excited for this but at the same time nothing will top the Muppet haunted mansion special for me
Based on what’s being set up here, it’s likely that my original theory of Constance being the antagonist and the Hatbox Ghost acting as an accomplice is likely to be true.
After all, the hatbox ghost having a severed head in his hatbox while Constance is infamous for _beheading_ her husbands seems to draw a fairly straightforward connection.
I'm really liking the way that they managed to display both of the mansions, because I'm sure we will definitely see some scenes that take place in the WDW version, just because it is a longer attraction. The movie is looking good!

Another reference you forgot to mention Dallin is that a 1:12 in the trailer, Danny, Tiffany and Rosario’s characters are in the library, a nod to the Orlando Haunted Mansion
If they did the movie version of Constance I wouldn’t mind because Constance needs an update. Every time I see her I just miss the beating heart bride because that was way more interesting in my opinion
Honestly, the set design/ideas on this movie is probably the most effort Disney's put into one of their film in years. Honestly really dang hyped for this, and this is coming from a guy who likes haunted mansion, but is not one of my top rides.
I’m surprised he didn’t bring up the costume design, the mom and son looks at first like 1930ish and then it turns to 70’s style. And Danny looks like he might be a part of a certain adventures club.
i'm sure there were a lot of reasons for the decision, but upon watching the trailer for the 2nd time, i think Madam Leota / Jamie Lee Curtis's headpiece in her living state is so cool - mimicking the look of her head within a spherical shape. Small thing, but really cool to echo her iconic look/shape in her living state before she becomes a dismembered head :>

Hey Offhand! In the movie poster, the figure represented behind LaKeith Stanfield's character is definitely the ghost host with the Axe. I think Constance has a few (maybe) costume changes, but It's kind've like how her actual dress is different than her other dresses in her portraits.
5:52 Ohhhh it’s Papa Legba. I love the idea of seeing New Orleans local folklore into the Haunted Mansion lore. It definitely expands the story.
I think you can use the trailer since it's advertising. Media promotional material (except of course for actual episodes or movies) is usually also allowed. It's worth looking into.

I was waiting for your analysis of the trailer! As soon as I finished it my first thought was "I seriously can't wait for OffHand Disney's" take on this! Needless to say you did not disappoint! Other then the one thing you also seemed annoyed about (Ol' Hattie's actor choice) I am extremely excited for this movie!
I did notice a couple of things that you might have missed.
1. The first time we see Constance she looks like her original portrayal when the mansion opened.
2. The Lock on the Mansion Gate Resembles a Hidden Mickey. as well as the Gates are the same design as the Attraction's gates
3. The scene with April looks similar to the staircase scene on the Magic Kingdom version of the ride.
4. The same scene as 3, I think this is also a reference to when they had a dude in a Knight costume running around the mansion? Might be a stretch though.
5. Same scene, between the 2 chairs looks to be the Bat Cage that recently showed up on the ride?
6. Owen Wilson's introduction looks to actually be filmed in Disneyland?

I am VERY excited for this movie. That's why I loved the Muppets Haunted Mansion because they had so many ride references for the fans 😁 and the muppets are awesome 👌 This trailer was packed full of fun easter eggs, so I have high hopes for the movie.
My partner and I watched the trailer and both were like OH LOOK ITS THE HATBOX GHOST even though we’ve never been to the Disneyland ride but he’s so iconic.
It definitely seems like they’re following the rides but also the story from the California ride and also a bit of the Paris ride with Constance and Owen Wilson’s outfit is very reminiscent of a settler.
All I know is that it’s going to be better than the Eddie Murphy film.
I love Hatbox Ghost! I used to post in the Doombuggies forums years ago, and we were always talking about how they should bring back Hatbox Ghost to the attraction. I was absolutely thrilled when they did!
This is my thoughts about the Hatbox Ghost plot for the movie:
I believe that Hattie is not going to be a villain. I say that because Hattie was in the new comic that was released like several years ago. With that being said, the comic told the story of "why" he disappeared from the Mansion. He said that he was able to travel to Haunted Mansions all over the world. So it looks like Dimension jumping is going to take place in the new movie and they are gonna need some help from 'Ol Hattie. Then again who knows 🤷♀️😆 its literally Haunted Mansion meets Clue.
THANK YOU! I was excited not only about the trailer but your analysis of it! The detail I am wondering about though is Constance. We see her first early on in the trailer, the next time we see a bride she does have that costume change. The costume change sort of reminds me of Captain Gore's bride in the original ride concept. Also, wasn't sure if the screaming figure in the room was Constance or the banshee from the graveyard, but it definitely looks like Constance after you've mentioned the veil. Thanks for the analysis, I can't wait for more of your vids!
7:36 the women ghost you mention looks like an old west saloon girl which could be a nod to phantom manor. I noticed someone asked for that as a stand alone or sequel.
I’d get behind that, especially with the updated attraction story the phantom could make the house look all beautiful like how it changes from old to new, and we could tell Melanie’s story in a bit more depth.
Constance’s portrait reminded me of the one from the Eddie Murphy movie. Perhaps an homage? Or maybe a cameo? Also, I notice when I bumped up the brightness on the poster that Danny DeVito’s character had a strange fuzziness behind him instead of a shadow. Almost as if it had been Photoshopped out. 🤔 Maybe a Hitchhiking ghost?
The trailer seems to show us the bat in the cage and the living chair, but they’re covered in drop cloth. It’s in the scene where the armor is chasing Rosario and her son!
the first apparition of constance has the glowing eyes hidden behind a veil of the earlier beating heart bride! however if her and the 2nd bride end up being different characters (which is think is likely bc the dresses are VASTLY different decades and it wouldn't make much sense to have the character suddenly jump from what looks like a regency wedding dress to an 1860s wedding dress) then I believe the first bride we saw might end up being the beating heart bride and the 2nd one with the axe would be constance! i hope this is the case because i'd LOOOOVE to have a piece of media that portrays them as separate entities instead of the same
I always thought it would be cool if they did a HM movie, but it was more like an Alice in Wonderland, where the main character just finds themself there without explanation and has to “find a way out.”
Is it reality, a different dimension, some sort of liminal state between life and death, just a dream? And in the end maybe that question is never really answered.
I also think it would be interesting to do something like The Haunting of Hill House or The Shining, where the focus isn’t so much on how the house came to be, but rather that it is an entity with its own motives and has power to influence others to achieve that.
Maybe the mansion isn’t necessarily evil, but instead serves as a place for those who enter to have some sort of cathartic self-discovery in order to leave.
Part of why I feel the ride is so timeless is that it isn’t bound by any one origin story, so there’s always more to notice and speculate about, which adds to the fun and mystery of it all. And a movie that leans into that could be really interesting.
Either way, I’m pleasantly surprised by this trailer and am crossing my fingers for the best!

In the sequence of the axe on the stairs, there are several images in her misty/dusty skirt that keep morphing as the actual trailer goes along, but it's fast, and frame by frame. In your screenshot, you can see live-action Simba's head in the lower right area (which morphs into a corpse pointing up at something), Olaf's face in the brightest part in the center, and a three-globe "Mickey" in the upper left which a few frames earlier is another animated face that I don't recognize.

I am so excited for this! I remember my first time riding the ride I was in Awh! I really hope they follow the story line that we all know it is and give us something to be proud to be fans of!
With how much I actually enjoyed Jungle Cruise when I saw it and seeing all of the references missed the first time I watched the trailer for this movie, I am actually really excited for it. I hope they really do the ride justice as I like the idea of doing movies based on the attractions

Now I get to be scared all over again about what they might do to the ride. >< When the first Haunted Mansion movie came out, I remember the Mme Leota actress saying that if it was popular enough, they might change some of the stuff inside. I PRAYED people would hate it, and was so relieved that was kind of what happened. It's not that I want this movie to flop (I didn't even know it was happening til just now, lol), but I'd really like the current rides to stay the way they are. I'm still sad that Johnny Depp got put in the PotC rides for no real reason. :P

Seriously, this trailer makes me so happy, I love the idea of taking a classic ride and faithfully building a movie around it, rather than another new ride based on an existing IP.

My main complaint about the Eddie Murphy HM movie back in the 2000s wasn't that it was technically bad, but rather that outside of a few references to the ride, like Madam Liotta and the ghost bride, it was just a generic comic haunted house movie: the mansion looked nothing like any of the Disney Haunted Mansions, nor the interiors, sets or most of the characters. This version, however appears much more faithful to the ride so I'm hoping that it's a better movie in that regard but we will see if it's a good movie otherwise.
As soon as I saw the trailer I knew I had to head on over here to watch you break it down. I'm excited for this movie regardless of how it turns out, but as of right now it's looking pretty promising.

Hot take: I think the Eddie Murphy HM movie is pretty damn good. Loved the details and references, and grew up with it being my fav movie so I may be biased. Yes I think the new trailer has a lot of cool references, but like the Muppet HM, it doesn’t feel tangible like the first Hm movie. It all seems very computer generated and green screen forward. I loved the real sets and amazing special fx that went into the first HM movie…

Great video! Your love & enthusiasm for the Haunted Mansion comes through clearly, which is a wonderful thing. Such a great eye for detail, too, catching so many references/tributes in the background - little details that are the difference between "yeah, this is a cool set" and "jeebus, this IS the haunted mansion!!" The Haunted Mansion has been my favorite attraction for as long as I can remember visiting Disneyland (which is saying a lot, since I'm actually older than the ride!) although I've never gotten into the lore of it. Your depth of knowledge is both amazing and fascinating. Oh - and the movie looks like it's gonna be great, too!
i loved the haunted mansion books based on the ride, hope to see refences. in the 3rd book 3 people go in the haunted mansion to do a job and on the way they notice empty grave holes one each for the workers coming in, just like in the trailer.
The lack of the Hitchhiking Ghosts is disappointing but I hope they are saving them for the movie and they play a pretty big role. But man words can’t explain how hyped I am to have the Hatbox Ghost get the spotlight in a movie. I really hope this movie shocks everyone and beats expectations but I’m cautiously optimistic.

to be fair this looks way WAY better than the first haunted mansion movie but idk why they're so attached to this plot of family drama at a new house with constance possessing the wife, the setting of a haunted mansion could work so well for so many interesting stories, why do they gotta go again with the 90s fish-out-of-water every-day guy protag with comedians in it, can you imagine if pirates of the carribean didn't have it's own plot or characters but instead you got 90s looking 'self-insert' family sent into the past and made to blend in with the pirates or smth, for a second i hopefully thought that this will take place in like 1900s at least but it doesn't actually look like that from the trailer

I REALLY want this movie to do well. I’m torn between watching this review and risking some spoilers and going into the movie knowing absolutely NOTHING. I will admit when I heard that Owen Wilson and Danny DeVito were going to be in it, my heart sank a little, much in the same way it did when I heard Eddie Murphy was going to be in the 2003 release. But from Offhand’s excited description of the poster (really Disney? No purple wallpaper with little demons hidden in the pattern? WTH?) I’m experiencing some mild flashes of hope. So, maybe like the Mansion itself with its “am I funny or am I scary?” duality of existence, The 2003 version was the “funny” half and 2023’s offering will be the “scary” half. Here’s hoping.

@@gingerholley4634 Oooo! Thank you! I refrained from watching the trailer because I didn’t want any spoilers. I only noticed that the poster wasn’t sporting our favorite demonic purple wallpaper and after that I stopped watching. I hope to God this is worth the price of admission when it comes out.

At 7:03 it appears to be the lady ghost that speaks to guests during Mickey's Not so Scary Halloween Party. (She tells jokes and makes comments about people in the queue or audience.)

As miss as I Love the Eddie Murphy Version of The Haunted Mansion its nice to see after 20 years a Reboot of the Haunted Mansion this time the original Ghosts is the storyline, I was hoping Disney would let in Kat Cressida casted as Constance Hatchaway I they that would have been Awesome if the casted her I can't wait to see this Movie

Dude, 5:07 there's a gold velvet upholstered sofa in the background of the stretching room pre-stretch. It's the sofa from the ballroom!
While I found this trailer to be underwhelming, the references to the ride I thought where pretty good. Although my favorite adaptation of the Haunted Mansion is 2021's Muppets Haunted Mansion.
This film will probably come to a close second.
That said if I had to rank this amongst the best adaptations of Disney rides this new adaptation is up there with Jungle Cruise.
I just hope it's not all style over substance and I hope the story actually ties everything up nicely and isn't just a loose thread.
