Grant, who you saw on-screen as the Great Intelligence in _The Name of the Doctor,_ but more relevantly to this, played a version of the 9th Doctor in an animated serial for the 40th anniversary in 2003 called _Scream of the Shalka_
He also played a version of the doctor in moffat's 1999 "the curse of fatal death" comic relief sketch.

Although the Great Intelligence did insert himself throughout the Doctor's timeline, so he could turn up in a scan like this. I mean, it's the Shalka Doctor obviously, but just giving an alternative possibility.

This felt like a standard Dr Who episode which was nice and cozy especially after the recent big episodes, it wasn't overly complicated but very enjoyable
RTD said in the behind the scenes interviews for this episode that he asked 'can we please do a Monster of The Week episode?'
Yeah, if I were coming back to do doctor who a second time around I'd want to do something different, but it's nice to return to the basics
This didn't feel like Dr. Who at all this was just fluff.

Yes! Honestly the fun fresh air I personally needed after the last 3 episodes. Like I loved them, but back to back to back, I needed something a little lighter and to to see the Doctor and Ruby have fun.

I'm in in the minority to think that 15 had the chemistry by himself .... but rouge was like acting against a brick.. i felt no warmth or emotion from his character.

@@Gantali9305 that is the point? he spends the whole episode wearing a mask and refusing to be open with the doctor, then at the end he finally opens up and sacrifices himself. Only for the doctor to try and mask his grief with ruby, bringing the whole thing full circle
What makes Rogue so interesting for me is that it feels like story-wise it'll be incredibly difficult to bring him back without the next episode where they meet being about the flaws of a whirlwind romance.
While I loved him in this episode and as a character, the most interesting story to continue it with is a re-meeting that doesn't hold up to what it should have been. But even if they do that I still want him to be around, regardless of whatever amount of romance, cause he was great.

It’s been a long time since Doctor Who made me cry and this episode made me do it.
Sure, Rogue said he doesn't cosplay, but he also plays DnD.
I love how into it they all are, especially Eric. I know it hasn’t totally been their cup of tea for a while but I’m happy to see that’s changed.

Rogue is like Captain Jack with River Song's temperament and Madame de Pompadour's storyline. How could the Doctor resist? This one better not stay dead...or turn into a bad guy.

I've had the feeling for a while that RTD is essentially repeating his first season with Christopher Ecclestone, though with Slitheen 2 parter skipped and one change in order.
1. Domestic drama focusing on companion (Rose/Ruby Road)
2. Camp space adventure (End of the World/Space Babies)
3. Historical with dimension-hopping villain and famous side character (Unquiet Dead/Devil's Chord)
4. Trapped in one location, companion fake-out death (Dalek/Boom)
5. Doctor/Companion action leads to mess-up of time (Father's Day/73 Yards)
6. Comment on modern media/communication (The Long Game/Dot and Bubble)
7. Historical with 'rogue'ish character (Empty Child-Doctor Dances/Rogue)
And we're heading to a two part finale portentially wrapping up hints about Bad Wolf....I mean Ruby....Susan Twist....Mrs Flood.....whatever...
Oh, and the Doctor only falls in love with people whose name begins with 'R'.

@@Tyrconnell It was left a bit ambiguous, the Doctor basically saying she can't do a relationship like that (for like, trauma, lifespan angst etc. reasons), but if she did it would be Yaz. But I'm choosing to interpret that as her having feelings for Yaz, just choosing not to act on them.
The choreographer was indeed the same one that does Bridgerton. I think they used some of their crew as well. Enjoyed your reaction.
Jack Harkness 2.0 xD A bit of Family of Blood with shapeshifters and wrathful Doctor
But most of all a lighthearted romp through history. Just a good ol classic doctor who episode.
i see the jack harkness similarities but they feel like completely different characters. Rogue is much more introvert
@@BARALover96 I like how he's similar to Jack, a roguish morally grayer space traveler who wields a gun and flirts with the Doctor, but has a much different personality, not just a copy. Rogue is more shy and quick to embarrass.
Very glad Eric's come to recognize and understand what the previous episode was trying to do. It takes a well developed mind to admit to ones own privilege
Richard E Grant was seen as one of the Doctor's faces in this episode. He was in "The Snowmen" in 2012 as the villain but he has actually played the Doctor twice, both being non canon until now. One was in a 2003 animated Story called Scream of the Shalka and the other was a parody written by Steven Moffat called "The Curse of Fatal Death". How exactly is this Doctor now canon? I am clueless. Scream of the Shalka can't be one of the pre-Hartnel Doctors because it featured the Master (who wasn't aware of any previous Doctors) and The Curse of Fatal Death would make Rowan Atkinson, Hugh Grant and more be canon Doctors which just adds a whole new level of wildness. So I have no clue, but I am happy because he is a great actor.

@@jeroen3468 I did think about that. I mean obviously Astrid the character isn't Kylie the singer, but when the Doctor was playing that music I was like "You have met her!"
Ok so - The Toymaker, (a being who is able to manipulate matter with thought and to whom time and space is nothing but an illusion, lest we forget), told us in the Giggle that he had made a jigsaw out of the Doctor's past. RTD has stated in many interviews that the purpose of this was to create wiggle room in whatever this show counts as canon (ie nothing, but some fans insist that it must have it, so here is the get-out clause). In doing this, he has pulled Richard E Grant's unofficial 9th Doctor into the main continuity.
But it gets even better than that!
Tales From The TARDIS introduced the Memory TARDIS. Dialogue presented within those short pieces states out right that multiple timelines now exist - most notably from the 7th Doctor, who says that in some of those he regenerates, in others he doesn't. RTD has stated that the effects of the Bi-generation reverberated throughout the Doctor's entire timeline, meaning that every past Doctor both regenerated and also stayed the same.
But it gets even better than that!
If Grants alternative 9th Doctor can be pulled in, so can other alternatives, including the "Unbound" Doctor's from Big Finish. But BEST OF ALL Rowan Atkinson is now an official incarnation of the Doctor, which I think is borderline joygasmic. But even more even more than that, in The Curse of the Fatal Death, Atkinson's Doctor is shown to regenerate multiple times. One of those times is Richard E Grant. So thanks to the Toymaker messing with the Doctors past, entwining multiverses and mashing it all together, AND the process of Bi-generation, Grant's Shalka Doctor is now not just a stand alone Doctor, but a continuation of his Curse of the Fatal Death incarnation.
And people thought the Timeless Child retcon was confusing! I FECKING LOVE THE AUDACITY OF IT

I didn’t enjoy the space babies and boom, though I’ve been loving the doctor and ruby ans their relationship every episode.
FYI, that scene at the end of Dot and Bubble, where Ncuti gives that amazing performance was the first thing he shot for this season. ( He'd shot his stuff for The Giggle previously but that was it )

My theory is that Rogue spends an eternity lost in a dimension where he cannot die. Waiting for doctor to come save him, who never does. Til after billions of years and hijinks with other universes and the pantheon(he may have even created them) he becomes The One Who Waits ...
Rogue's ring looks very like the D&D 5E character class symbol for Rogues.
Also, people didn't go down on one knee and propose or indeed use engagement rings in the Regency Era so the non-alien/time-travellers in the room would have been confused as well as scandalised.
In case anyone else hasn’t answered it, over here in the U.K., Tarmac is what’s used to make road surfaces (including runways, as you said!).
To help clarify, full name is Tarmacadam, but what we call tarmac is what the US would refer to as 'asphalt', I believe? (Which itself is an abbreviation, technically). And before someone goes full pedant, I know tarmac and 'asphalt concrete' are separate things, but its a case of the UK being archaic and still uses tarmac to refer to road surfaces (which are actually asphalt concrete).

I'm guessing Chulder sounds familliar to Aaron because he's thinking of Chula, the warrior race mentioned in the gas mask episode that were responsible for making Captain Jack's ship as well as the ambulence that released the nanogenes

The Dungeons and Dragons name drop got me thinking. There are pantheons and evil gods all throughout DnD so I did quick search. There is couple of references to "The one who waits" or "He who waits" in DnD lore. Mostly relating to the gods of chaos and tyranny. My other google hits were all Cult of the Lamb references, which I have not played.
The trap locked at 6 with the addition of broken-beak, so Rogue (who knows his tech) knew he had to do a "matter exchange" to free Ruby by taking her place. He's probably never faced a situation where he could selectively free someone already locked in, so that's something for him to think about while he waits for the Doctor to find him.
This episode was just so fun! I hope we see more of Rogue in the future.

there's an extra Bridgerton easter egg because Jonathan Groff played King George IV in Hamilton, the same King George IV who is losing his mind in Bridgerton. Jonathan Groff probably couldn't film more than one episode because he was developing a revival of Merrily We Roll Along for Broadway at the time, a play for which he just won a Tony for best leading actor in a musical. Dan Radcliffe also won a Tony for his role in the same musical.

Chuldur sounds a lot like Chula which is the civilisation the space ambulance from Captain Jack's debut The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances.
Fun fact, 'Chula' is the name of an Indian restaurant in Hammersmith, London where Steven Moffat, Mark Gatiss and Robert Shearman met to celebrate being hired to write stories for the 2005 revival.
Is it just me or has Ruby hardly been in The Tardis this season? I don’t think we had a scene of her and The Doctor inside The Tardis together since Episode 2
That's pretty normal for RTD's writing in general. It's been said that RTD uses the TARDIS mainly just as transport to facilitate stories, while Moffat (and to a lesser extent Chibnall) treats it like a second home for the Doctor and companion(s). I will say I miss the more homely type of TARDIS we had with 12, and those quieter moments in the TARDIS.
"Boom"? They showed The Doctor hear the scream inside Idris. Were they both shown inside?

He’s a more reserved, slightly less cocky Captain Jack. I really hope we see him again. I also love that he started falling into old unhealthy coping mechanisms and Ruby pulled him out of it. He told 14 he was okay because 14 would be okay, so I don’t want to see 15 repressing and running again.

A thought that occurred to me was that if the bird people and Rogue were all sent to the same random, barren dimension together Rogue’s gonna have a rough time of it until the Doctor finds him. That experience could easily fuck a person up in a profound way, couldn’t it? That would be sad, but also make for a nice, juicy, dark script to entice the very busy Jonathan Groff back for another appearance. But I’m sure RTD has a plan. 😊

The song the Doctor & Rogue are dancing to is A Grace Jones song, Libertango (I've Seen That Face Before), which may be a clue to who Rogue really is.
The other thing is the addition of Richard E Grant amongst the Doctor's faces. He played the Doctor in the animated Shalka adventure, before the 2005 reboot. RTD was none to kind, regarding that performance. He them showed up as the Great Intelligence in the Moffatt era. I don't believe they've added him in to canonize Shalka.
The only thing I wish they did was still have someone scream during the scene Ruby got "killed" as then it makes the scene from earlier make no sense.
Aaron, the beak is not why birds die when they run into windows. It's the bruising or damage to their brains, or breaking of their *necks* that kills them when they run into windows. 🤦♂️
This episode was fun! I loved the costumes and the romantic subplot, the music, etc. We needed a breather after the past couple episodes.
He plays DnD but didnt get Cosplay? Idk ive sustained suspension of disbelief of alot of Doctor Who things from Psychic Paper to Fart Terrorist aliens but this might be my line to draw Lol
Fart Terrorist Alien is my FAVORITE Ska band.
Tbh when I watched it I just assumed that DnD was his dead/missing partner's thing- he's not very good at roleplaying or acting as you can see through the episode, so it made the most sense to me.

I wouldn’t say this has been a doctor lite season I think it only feels like that cause we had 2 doctor lite episodes in a row, even though I felt he was way more in dot and bubble then 73 yards
It still baffles me how people are saying 2/8 episodes being doctor-lite... makes this a doctor-lite season. "Why arent they using him more" only episode 4 doesn't use him. Even episode 5 which is doctor lite has the big ending, and frequent scenes. And episode 3 is a big performance even on the landmine.
i wish the season was much more then 8 episodes.

Am I the only one that got 1985 Prince or Morris Day vibes from The Doctor's look and vibe in this episode? I'm not in the LGBTQ community, but I absolutely Loved this episode. Very "classic" Doctor Who type episode but with modern adjustments. For all those who might complain about him enamored with a guy, did they have an issue with Rose? With the Woman in the Fireplace? The woman when the Doctor's psyche was kept in the pocket watch when he battled with The Family? How about that he has a Granddaughter dating all the way back to the First Doctor? If they didn't have issues with those women, then their issue is that it's a guy, and as we've seen The Doctor is non-binary and can regenerate into male, female, or something undefined. Rogue is like the Jack Harkness for this Doctor, at least in terms of "vibes," and I hope that he returns. Wouldn't mind seeing him as a Companion or perhaps The Companion for Ncuti's final season for example. Very interesting character. The "bad guys" are ok, but beyond this one episode I'm not sure if we need to see them again. But yeah, this episode is a 10/10 from me.
