«You don't have to be a million times better than your opponent, you just have to make one less mistake than he does»… Wise & Effective! Ramsey, you are Sun Tzu's true heir… definitely!
*When I watch a fight* I get the habit of watching it analytically instead of entertainment. I pick one side and act as if I am that fighter. I then shadow box, slipping punchess, ducking throwing jabs and etc while watching.
I had fun on the bag so I was neglecting my shadowboxing. Then when I'd miss my hooks I'd almost spin around and nearly fall. It helps you keep form also when you miss strikes!
My functional strength comes in the form of out-flexing people in confrontations. "Oh, what's that? You got a problem with me? MUSCLE CRAB!" * flexes and twitches until everyone gets uncomfortable and leaves *
I've been away from the boxing gym for the past 10 years, its only since April this year where I've comeback but only for sparring with active fighters, no other training just bag work and sparring, but then I got injured 3 weeks ago and couldn't come into the gym so I was forced to shadowbox, not just for the sake of it but in context because I was missing the ring, I've just got home from sparring and it feels like I've fell in love with boxing again, if you think of the hotdog, sparring would be the meat and shadowboxing the bread and butter. Love your videos Ramsey, greetings and God bless you from Auckland, New Zealand.
100 💯 valid Mr. Dewey. I couldn’t really understand shadow boxing and why to move certain ways and use rhythm until I did some sparring in boxing. Why to keep hands up why to flow why to keep your pendulum back and fourth side to side feet close to ground and why you constantly move your head to flow onto the punch. It is definitely a rehearsal of what you do in sparring and or freestyle mitt work at the very least. All about the angles and controlling distance even when you shadow box. Burns a lot of calories and trains you to stay relaxed while you keep busy. Thanks again sir.
Sir, Mr Coach, You are truly a unique special human being. Thank you for your effort in sharing useful content explained in a concise and rational fashion. Please keep enjoying yourself while cracking the nature of reality!
The video title doesn't do you justice here. The information on watching fights is amazing, I've never thought of watching the space between fighters. Love your channel man.
Thanks again for sharing your experiences :) Context. That's the reason why I like to know the applications behind the postures in Taiji. Otherwise how am I supposed to know and feel how this posture needs to be. I'll also stick to your 4 rules for your students. Thanks!
Hi Ramsey, thank you for all your vids. Recently found your channel and am working through all the vids you've posted. Question for you: I'm a new dad and ever since my daughter was born, the time I have available to stay fit has diminished. Currently, I mainly do bodyweight exercises like pullups, one-handed pushups, jump rope, burpees, and hitting the heavy bag. I totally get what you are saying about context and its importance. Is there some kind of way for me to develop some kind of context, even ever so slightly, without having someone to spar against?
Hadn't come across this video before I asked about the usefulness of kata/poomsae for someone with no fighting experience or able to get any training at a gym, the bit about watching a fight seems so obvious but it hadn't occurred to me.
I am an internal stylist but I will find a way to add this to my program. I’m thinking 3 rounds of shadow boxing could be forms and shadow boxing so do one form which equals half a rounds so 2 forms and two rounds of shadow boxing or something like that, I will definitely try it thanks
Hey Mr. Dewey, I've been learning kickboxing for almost a year now. I spar sometimes with the other students and I always have trouble with the ones who are taller and have a good reach advantage over me. Can you explain some strategies on how to fight a taller opponent?
You could try to close the gap wherein some tall fighters sucks at in fighting that is where you could Improve, try to develop your foot work to close the gap easier and so that you could fight in your terms.
@@DrDino2426 I had a friend who was complaining that a younger kicker was always beating him in light sparring. I suggested he close the gap before the kid got going. Next time I saw my friend he told me that the kid got mad because my buddy was "too close" ! :)
A year too late but.. set “traps”. An example is moving away from your taller opponent. When they go to follow you, close the distance together. +1 / -1 -1 / +1 +1 / +1
I'm a taller person . Every shorter fighter that's ever give me problems studies and practices Tyson and peakaboo style . You have to duck under our jab get right up close and mix body and head hooks . In kickboxing obviously you can knee and kick aswell but the tactics and footwork still work . There's plenty of instructional videos on it .
When you shadowbox a round kick, would you snap it right back to your stance or would you allow the momentum to spin your whole body all the way back around? Thanks
hi Ramsey, thank you very much for your videos. you are a source of knowledge and experience. i have some background in traditional martial arts. i did KungFu in a club in London for 2 years, where we did serious drilling, conditioning and padwork, and some (though definitely not enough) free sparring. our instructors did spar regularly though, and this showed in class and i think in what i took away from it. when i moved to Paris, i looked for a serious KungFu school and saw that what you (and many other people) say about traditional martial arts is true. i really think that only professional fighters would be ok fighting my instructors in London in a no gloves - no rules situation, but those guys in Paris did not inspire me any respect, certainly not enough to entrust them my integrity in case i find myself in trouble. so, i switched to BJJ and my question is: can you do a video on shadow grappling? thanks in advance. there is also something you didn't get 100% right. forms in traditional martial arts are supposed to be phrasebooks. not books. the form as a whole doesn't have meaning (or context) but it has meaningful pieces that you can isolate and then combine. is learning forms the best way to learn martial arts? maybe not. but there are (at least a few) schools where things are explained properly and context is given. thanks again, nikos
both work in unison. bag work helps you feel your hits connect, shadow helps you practice techniques with a shadow opponent you have control over what he does and you have control of how to react to the attacks. you can speed up the shadows moves, or slow down the shadow moves. to better practice the movesets
Train solo... Watch some vids, read some books, practice techniques as PERFECTLTY as you can and exercise... 80% of it is out of the gym. Also eat well and sleep well
Superior33 BornUnderstanding okay, thank you! where I am from, fighting is looked down upon and there is mostly only kickboxing classes. although I suppose kickboxing could be helpful, not really where I’m going for right now. thanks so muchhhh
