  • Ian Hislop, the editor of the satirical news magazine Private Eye and team captain on Have I Got News for You, came to Sheffield Doc/Fest for the first time. In conversation with the BAFTA winning actor and satirist Jolyon Rubinstein (The Revolution Will be Televised, Revolting), Ian explored the role that satire plays in documenting our world and getting to the truth, as well as discussing his new documentary exploring immigration.
Filmed by Sheffield Hallam University students and edited by Matt Sturdy.

I've never heard of Jolyon Rubinstein but I'm surprised how many negative comments there are about him. He spoke for a very small % of the time.

I suspect people have trouble reconciling Ian's calmness, and Jolyon's inability to sit still, and interpret the latter as attention-grabbing.

Absolute gem of a guest, good production values, it would take enormous effort to get this wrong. Rubinstein manages this with the ease of a professional self-obsessed idiot.

I think the mistake with Brexit is that people like Farage tried to get votes from racists, who thought voting to leave the EU would mean less people in Britain from Pakistan, as they didn't realise EU means Europe and white people come from Europe, and if we get less people here from Europe, it would mean more people from other places. They didn't realise Farage just wanted to keep the British economy closely linked with USA banks, encouraging people to live in greed and debt, so he could keep selling his get rich quick schemes. Plus we would be even more of a USA lapdog and have to take in the refugees due to USA meddling. Such as how Afghanistan wasn't extremist until the USA were arming and training extremists there in the 1980s against Afghanistan, and then the USA didn't care what the extremists were doing to the people until 9/11, and now the USA has just given up there to hand Afghanistan back to the Taliban, and those same people who thought leaving the EU would mean less immigrants are angry at all the refugees.

In the current climate of political "correctness" trying to create a world where no one is allowed to even potentially offend anyone else it is really unlikely to have something as "offensiveness based" as Spitting Image.

Why do these events always employ the worst possible hosts? There are hundreds of competent people who somehow never get the gig. Rubenstein might be a decent satarist or actor (I don't know because I've never seen him before) but being an interviewer/host is a talent and skill that he simply does not possess. Cringeworthy, embarrassingly bad and poor interviewing style that ruined an otherwise absorbing event.
