When i started today on sfm: This will be so easy! When I try to edit: Ugh this is so hard! When I watch all of these videos: Omg this is so easy and fun.
I'm 15 years old and have wanted to learn SFM for a while. These tutorials really help. I now know how to do simple animations, use different rigs, import models from different games and more. These are the best tutorials on CZcams!
"It stops me from being able to create a gap, now all the gap frames are at the end. That's because the SFM is automatically collapsing time, we added this because we were constantly getting black frames between the frames and we decided it was just better..." Son, That's why Black-holes.
Last tip = best tip! Would be a real tragic shame to get to making, well, a top-movie and then forget to safe it, discovering later all ya hard work's gone DX
That moment when you have been working 7 months for a 30 minutes animation and exactly before finishing and saving your sfm crashes....this happened to me but at a GMod animation.
+Unshippedtundra It takes time to learn it. Just need to watch these, mess with it for a while, then eventually you will start to pick it up and do something great with it, that is what I am doing now. You just need to keep going at it.
So I have a habit of not saving my SFM work until I'm finished with the whole project. So whenever you say "And remember to press Control S to save you work" I was like: Ooh, can't forget that.
This looks awesome. Having experience using editing software this looks great. Looks easy to use with the proper know how and sounds like you can do amazing work with it the more advanced the user wants to take it.
I love how you say save your work at the end of the videos. I am creating a film while watching through these videos and I was just about to leave my computer without saving. Also, thankyou for making these (I would be so lost otherwise), and thankyou for releasing the SFM.
Confusing and hard at first, but not impossible. I recommend taking simple notes on certain shortcuts and their purpose so you don't forget later on, if you keep forgetting the information.
It seems as if a lot of people think that this is going to be some super-easy intuitive program. It wont. If you want to make a nice looking SFM, your going to have to spend a lot of time practicing, plus a lot more. 3D animation of any sort is super time consuming, and requires a lot of patience.
Its really cool that Valve would release something like this. Its a win win really. Now that the average person can make a really slick looking machinima. there will be more videos about their game, also this will keep their community happy with these kinda things. Valve knows how to treat their community.
At a young age and intrested in making animations in tf2, this helps a ton and you don't understand how much this helps. I created a little film called "badwater gameplay".
This is... Amazing. And it's FREE?? I'm so surprised, thanks valve keep it up, and these tutorials are awesome too! (if the full release isn't free I'll buy it anyway :/)
on the bright side the community is pretty big. wont be long before someone starts picking up the slack and making decent tutorial videos. that being said i really much prefer listening to this guy. his teaching voice is so smooth :3. Barely ever says umm or aah
To anybody starting out, I would recommend 13.1 Pose to pose animation, It is a lot easier to follow, And requires no prior knowledge of SFM, or animation in general. It takes you through every step and leaves nothing up to chance.
I pray to get a beta key if I don't? I honestly don't care. I am sure this will be free when it's fully released, if it's not, I will save all the money I ever get to get it! This is amazing. :)
TF2 is the pinnacle of Valve's source engine development. It's a live, well played lab rat that they can use to test new systems and features for the Source Engine. This is one of them.
Two ways: 1. Record the killer first. And when he does enough damage, press the comma button and switch to another class. You can add blood effects in the editor. 2. Learn animation, so you can either modify the player or make an animated character. 3. Don't show it, make it off-camera and use sounds to make it seem like it happened.
Agree, maybe i dont learn everything by watching this once, but i learn the basics, and then i can watch this 2-3 times to understand everything and remember
I'd say it is way easier than most video editing tools out there. I have it too... It's mostly about getting the hang of it, knowing where's what, and stuff.
That interface is so damn sexy. I bet Autodesk and Adobe and crying they couldn't get a program 1% as good as this. Now all we need is Valve to make their own 3D modelling and rendering software.
I had the same problem for a while. I think you should click on the timeline where you would want it to be and press and hold "B" if not try pressing it a few more times after that, it just started to work like that for me, so I guess it's a matter of pressing and holding or just pressing it a lot. >3
Well it's actually much easier than the gmod. Also if you keep practice and re watching the tutorials, I'm pretty sure we all manage to do some great+funny movies
Still no luck, i was just starting to make my own SFM when everything just stopped and then the "NO LOADED MAP" thing came back up. I have pretty much givin up on this dream
So, I have the Gmad converter. Now how do I import Gmod stuff into SFM? I just recently got SFM and would really like to make a movie. =/ I've tried converting things, but have no clue how to get it in SFM. Also, nice videos so far.
you know big visual effects studios have theyre own animation tools, they use max and maya for small jobs, when it goes to hard core stuff, there comes custom stuff.
Okay, seems very cool, but what about editing .dem files? And what about importing avi's or custom pictures, intro's etc. so I don't have to re-render it in vegas?
You cut up the recording, so you can change the camera angle for the clip you've just cut from the main clip. I.e, you have an overview camera shot, you cut the clip with the blade, and then you can change the angle of the clip you just separated into a close-up. Hope this helped.
About half an hour into those Tutorials. Only remembers how to save.
+CanEhdianbuddEh!? xD
+CanEhdianbuddEh!? yeah lol

I am an adopted fetus years-old and this was very helpful.

Did you stick with it? Hope you found an outlet for your passion 👌
This entry was particularly helpful to me. It hit the very point that I was trying to figure out (Camera transitions). Top job, sir.
Me, too. I always hate how I think "Oh, I get this now," pause the video, then do a whole bunch of crap and ruin it XD. Off topic, I know, but :P
Collin Gentry "Then do a bunch of crap and ruin it" - SAME HERE x'D
This is a very easy tutorial to understand and learn, even for non-English native speakers (such as myself). I'd give this guy a medal right away.
"It stops me from being able to create a gap, now all the gap frames are at the end. That's because the SFM is automatically collapsing time, we added this because we were constantly getting black frames between the frames and we decided it was just better..."
Son,
That's why Black-holes.

So do I ^_^
One of many Tolkien books, by the way :D
Warren Lloyd same!

as a video maker, I can relate to that case when you forget to save, and must do everything, ALL OVER AGAIN!
I still have no idea what I'm doing....

Take some advice given to me from my graphic design teacher:
Save every few seconds.
***** Because everybody knows adobe is gonna crash, its not an if its a when!
Yup, your gonna lose a lot of stuff if you don't save often. It's worth making a habit because in the end it'll save you a lot of time.
im watching this while downloading it

ha ha me too pal, me too
i deleted it doe because it was too time consuming making one. i have school you know

Awesome tutorial! These are helping me out nicely in my rookie attempt to make my first SFM!
I love how you say save your work at the end of the videos. I am creating a film while watching through these videos and I was just about to leave my computer without saving. Also, thankyou for making these (I would be so lost otherwise), and thankyou for releasing the SFM.
Shot3? HL3 Confirmed
the hope in that comment
Still some hope
Servoracc yep
Everything Valve-related that has a 3 is actually a demo of HL3
Confusing and hard at first, but not impossible. I recommend taking simple notes on certain shortcuts and their purpose so you don't forget later on, if you keep forgetting the information.
kudos to the valve employee who did this. he's awesome!
These tutorials are simply amazing, thanks! :)
Looks awesome:D. Cant wait for an invite!

I think everyone gets it, tries it, and ends up here
its true bro
And that's just fine and dandy. It's nice to have Gmod's charm to contrast the rising potency for some truly fluid SFM animations.
It's this that makes me love Valve.
Its really cool that Valve would release something like this. Its a win win really. b for blade. thanks finally found out how to use different cameras from that. thanks man
this is an INCREDIBLE tool for making machinima :) so easy to pick up as a n00b
I´m making my first SMF while watching this. Man , this is going to be hard.
I seriously don't understand how its even possible to make tutorial's this good, :D
This is... Amazing. And it's FREE?? I'm so surprised, thanks valve keep it up, and these tutorials are awesome too! (if the full release isn't free I'll buy it anyway :/)

I like your outro. "And remember hit ctrl+s to save your work".
Bro this is awesome tutorial for NOOBS (Including me) so keep up the good work!!!
Can you show us how to animate? Besides recording
To anybody starting out, I would recommend 13.1 Pose to pose animation, It is a lot easier to follow, And requires no prior knowledge of SFM, or animation in general. It takes you through every step and leaves nothing up to chance.
thx very much your help was really apriciated, now i can finish my movie :D

Watching these is making me come up with so many ideas! If only I actually had SFM...
That's right. In the end, this is an awesome tutorial and even an alien could get it.
When I started SFM without watching the tutorial, I was wondering how to change camera angles.
I wish I had watched this video before. :D
To be honest, the stop motion aspect will always be appreciated much like cartoons with cgi now-a-days.
Thank you very much :) You really helped me with SFM
I'm so glad for ctrl+z helping me learn through trial and error too
watching this while its downloading :D
This helped a whole lot, I made a scene too.
Wow. You're great in SFM
Man thats hot!
thanks so much valve, but i think you should put captions into the vid :3
wow, never knew it was this easy.
downloading now.

Can you add cosmetics to these in game characters?
im pretty techy myself but trying to take on this tool made me feel so wrong about that until i found these tuts
Super useful!

I think they base the key handouts on who has good equipment and/or who contributes a lot to the tf2 community.
It's hard in the beginning, but after a time, you'll learn.
Agree, maybe i dont learn everything by watching this once, but i learn the basics, and then i can watch this 2-3 times to understand everything and remember
Before you record, there is an option to have it from a first-person perspective. It's on the menu before you hit Record.
I'd say it is way easier than most video editing tools out there.
I have it too... It's mostly about getting the hang of it, knowing where's what, and stuff.
who would dislike this the videos great help for sfm
The man in charge of TF2

i lost it at the editing part. and now i understand.
So far so good... on to 03...
Well it's actually much easier than the gmod.
Also if you keep practice and re watching the tutorials, I'm pretty sure we all manage to do some great+funny movies
You probably have the best scout face pic ever

how do u make the character's not all fuzzy?
this tool is awesome beyond words.
Best videos ever
An era always has to have an end, one way or another. Just hope SFM will bring a real evolution to Painis Cupcakes.
It does
this tool is so simple and yet so powerful, its bloody awesome
So, I have the Gmad converter. Now how do I import Gmod stuff into SFM? I just recently got SFM and would really like to make a movie. =/ I've tried converting things, but have no clue how to get it in SFM.

*THE NEW BEGINNING-[TF2 SFM]*
He does a pretty good job, you just need to give it a few go's and you eventually get it
Its helping me just fine :P
ME TOO!!!! O_O
No you're right. They answer with 4 years of in-trailer easter eggs.
God I'm dumb.... How does one make the master shot xD I can't get very far.
We can use locations of GMod and even characters exclusive from there to work out great vids.
Okay, seems very cool, but what about editing .dem files? And what about importing avi's or custom pictures, intro's etc. so I don't have to re-render it in vegas?

I want this so freaking bad!
