- čas přidán 6. 09. 2024
- Coastal Foraging on the shore line at low tide for delicious edibles is one of our favourite things to do. Exploring rock pools and tide pools searching for Crabs, Lobster, Clams and other sea life is not only fascinating but is a great way to get some fresh air and enjoy the outdoors. Then after collecting what we needed for a meal I explain how to prepare them safely. Give advice on how to forage safely for wild food before a delicious family cook up teaching you how to cook Mussels.

Within about ten minutes of you starting this video you managed to cover and explain all the important points of foraging, doing it ethically and sustainably, good care of your shellfish, ie the air pump in the bucket allowing you to have the best possible product at the end of the day. Brilliant post and lovely to see Spargo doing his stuff and I hope young James enjoyed the cross country run. Keep up the good work buddy, all the best to you and yours.
Thank you David and best wishes to you and your family 😊👍🏻
Except for always take from as close to the low tide mark as you can. You don’t want to be eating a mollusc that’s been in the sun and out of water 1/2hr after the high tide turn. I was told this from a young age by my grandfather🍺🍺
I know this is nothing to do with the video but I always feel like I'm about to be told off when someone uses my full name!! 😂
Hahaha 🤣
@@downunderfulla6001 - That is never usually an issue as you won’t find shellfish large enough to eat that high on the shoreline. But I take your point. 👍🏻
CZcams algorithm lead me to this channel and I must say it's a 40 minutes well spent. Sustainable foraging and cooking what a great combo.
Thank you and welcome.
So seriously sweet of Jim to cook special foods for James so he can eat well and still eat along with you all. That's truly beautiful how he cares for your family
Jim is simply wonderful 💙
The two if you (John and Jim) complement each other brilliantly. I love how you not only do what you do, but you let everyone know what everything is, and Jim’s culinary mastery makes it all look (and I’m sure taste) delicious. Cheers to you and your family.
We are simply sharing what we love doing Thomas. 😊👍🏻
@@TheFishLocker And it definitely shows. :)
You taught me not to exploit nature by not taking a bunch of shells in on group at a time. It opened my mind, thank you.
My pleasure. 😊👍🏻
I could listen to your friend talk all day, he has a very pleasant and gentle way of speaking.
Jim is wonderful isn’t he. 😊💙
This is exactly what I needed today, thank you so much for everything you do! These coastal foraging videos are my absolute favorite!
We love them too, hopefully now the tourists have gone we can get more made. 😊👍🏻
ABSOLUTELY AGREE 💯
Highly concur. I love when John goes beach exploring in the tidal pools. He knows the flora and fauna and I learn things too!
I think the cooking adds to the experience. Everything isn't fried with the addition of chili sauce and mayonnaise. Not to knock the guy who does that but it is taking excellent ingredients and doing the minimum to cook them.
I just love you and your family so much. And Jim is just amazing. Love everything about you guys.
Every video is a lesson with you John. But then - just occasionally - Jim gives us a culinary Masterclass on top of it. Wonderful!
Thank you so much both of you and my Best Wishes to all the family.
We are both just sharing what we love doing 😊
GOD BLESS THE FISHLOCKER FAMILY AND SPARGOS KITCHEN! I love this channel and their love of family. Also respect for our gift of our eco system. The education that John gives is invaluable.. All the best to you and yours John!!!
I hope the videos help folks out, wether it is through education or escapism. 😊
@@TheFishLocker you'd get done for little mussels like that back home New Zealand
Every time you go to Jim’s kitchen I run around the house and gather up paper and pencil so I can get his recipes. The only bad thing is that I have to go to my local fish store to get the clams and oysters. But it’s worth it thanks to you and Jim.. My best to the both of you. 😊
When Jim is able, I know he is going to write a book with them in. 😉
Great video, nice to see that Jim hasn’t lost his touch, and lovely to see the rest of the family sitting around a table enjoying the food and one another’s company. Let’s have some more of this type during the winter, when you can’t get out in the boat. Once again great Sunday night entertainment, thanks John and Jim.
Sadly due to the influx of tourists we haven’t been able to forage much from the shore this summer but now they have departed we can get back to it. 😊👍🏻
Best part of going through my work day was watching Jim work wonders in the kitchen
I am glad you enjoyed the video. 😊👍🏻
Its good to see, even after years, you are still wholesome as ever. You remind me a lot of my father (a crabber) he teaches me a lot when I used to go catch with him. Its very satisfying and relaxing
When I started making videos I set out a set of criteria for myself. Simple, honest and original content. No drama, no B/S. just sharing what we know and love doing. It may not be the “CZcams” way. But it is how I wish to do things.
As a few other viewers have said, foraging vids are my favorite by far! And now I'm hungry for some seafood dishes haha! Thanks, John! 🎣🎣
I am glad you enjoy them Mike. Best wishes and have a great day. 😊
Yay! Always a treat to see Jim! The vibes from his kitchen are so wholesome!
I am glad you enjoyed joining us. 😊
Seeing two pros working together and the whole process from sea to table is awesome watching
Simply sharing what we love doing. 😊💙
I've seen a friend go bright green and very ill 2 hours after eating one bad mussel. You are right John. Don't risk a dodgy one!
Not worth it is it. 😉🤢
Jim is the icing on the cake when it comes to this type of foraging and eating vids, fantastic stuff!
He is wonderful isn’t he 😊💙
So refreshing to watch a master chef who doesn't feel the need to over-exaggerate and perform for the camera. Simple clear enthusiasm still comes out like a great aroma. We can smell the kitchen because we are standing beside you. Wonderful!!
Jim is wonderful isn’t he. 😊💙
I think thoese are the best chefes that can do alot of flavor with fewer things
So delightful to see Jim! He's looking well, always love to watch him work his cooking magic. Cheers! ❤️
Jim is wonderful isn’t he. 😊
Gotta love Jim, everybody loves Jim!
He’s the Attenborough of the cooking world.
All the best Jim lad 🙏🏻👍🏻
Jim is simply wonderful isn’t he 😊💙
I'm allergic to shellfish, but this looks fantastic. I managed restaurants for over 27yrs. This is how I cook. Unfortunately, I'll just have to watch. Good eats to y'all mate.
Remember telling a family member we were having mussels as part of the evening meal. Floods of tears followed by me walking down the street and along the side of the breakwater, here in Hartlepool - in the dark - to release them into a rock pool. Happy daughter in law and even happier mussels. I like to imagine their descendants cheering as I walk past. Maybe they’ll erect a statue of me, one day. Another wonderful video; thank you.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Too funny Mr White well done
Colin I am from Middlesbrough but would not eat the ones from pool or tne north east coast
You need a man cave
Then you can eat the lot 😅
Dear God!!!
oh how i’ve missed this series! good to see you guys back on the shore once again - godspeed to you and your family, John!
Thank you Ben, now we are back into foraging season we should be able to do more. 😊👍🏻
You like to fish and forage and Jim likes to cook and feed you ; great combination !
So enjoyed watching this video! Two friends cooking, chatting and enjoying each others company. Magic!
Hope for more Jim videos, he is a treasure :)
Jim is my father in law. 😊💙
An excellent video and guide for any novice foragers, I really appreciate how you explain about only foraging so many from a group. This video is just so wholesome and the gentleman that cooked with you is so lovely. Thank you for sharing your findings and your wisdom.
It is our pleasure. Jim is my father in law and he is just wonderful isn’t he. 😊💙
Столько труда вложено! Благодарю Вас за бесплатный мастер класс! Будьте здоровы и счастливы!
It is our pleasure. 😊
Another smashing upload John, thanks to Jim for the lovely cooking. Anyone who says they eat all shellfish regardless of the shells opening is very lucky, sadly 20 years ago I had shellfish poisoning and was hospitalised for 3 days and it was touch and go. I am just grateful I still love all seafood, (except whelks). Regards to Hannah, James and the shy one, greetings from Cyprus! 🐟🐟🐟🐟👍👍
Yes Jacqui, definitely not worth the risk imo. Have a lovely day and take care 😊💙
This was such a wholesome video! It brings back memories when I was a kid and on the beaches in the north east with my dad and finding molluscs and crabs. Thanks for sharing!
It is our pleasure. I am glad you enjoyed joining us. 😊👍🏻
Watching this video whilst eating my dinner …..looks at my plate …..then looks at what Jim is cooking…..my plate doesn’t look so nice now 😉 always a pleasure watching one of your videos John 👍
Haha. Sorry Richie, not to rub it in but they were bloomin delicious. 🤣
The foraging videos I think are my favorite John. Amazing what nature blesses us with
We love them too. 😊
LOOKS LIKE HEAVEN TO ME !!!!!! When i was a lad me and me brother gathered good eats.....We practically lived by the water......I miss it so much now in me latter years......You are so blessed to be where you are.....I am in usa in texas now......
It is amazing what you miss as you grow older isn’t it.
Go to the coast...Texas has great fishing and crabbing and shrimping...don't know about clams
Such an enjoyable vid. Lovely to see Jim in the kitchen again, making us all hungry 🙂
He is simply wonderful isn’t he. 😊💙
I love your message of not taking everything from one spot. Sustainability is important for biodiversity and the ecosystem.❤
I really enjoyed watching this. I love mussels and find watching Jim cooking very therapeutic. He's so chilled out and organised.
He is brilliant isn’t he.
i loved the older gent! so sweet and loving! you can see that everything he is making is coming from pure love!
Jim is wonderful isn’t he. 😊💙
@@TheFishLocker both of you are. but would love to see him in your videos more!! loved watching him cook
So good to see you back with Jim preparing your foraging exquisitely! You make a great team. The food looked amazing. Thankfully you can't see me drooling! Many thanks for posting these videos, they are a great way to escape and informative as well. Best wishes, Kev
It is our pleasure Kev 😊👍🏻
I just sat here and went MMMMMmmmm MMmmmmm. What a delightful meal you had from fresh mussels. I’ve never prepared them. Thanks for the information
I hope you found the video informative Laura. 😊
You really are an amazing steward and advocate for nature. Bravo John.
Simply doing what we feel is right. 😊👍🏻
i’ve only found your channel a few days ago, but i’ve fallen in love with your coastal foraging series! i love watching them while i’m eating and they make me feel so at peace and happy. your content is great and i love your passion and the way you care for the ocean while you forage! keep up the great work ❤
Thank you very much and welcome to our channel. 😊
@@TheFishLocker happy to be a part of the community! 😎
I always enjoy your visits with Jim and discovering what delicious meals he’s creating!
I am glad that you enjoy joining us. 😊
Me carefully taking mental notes about coastal foraging, from a city in a landlocked country...😄
You never know when you will find yourself by the sea.
Me too pal 😂🤷🏻♂️ the things we watch at daft o’clock, although I be watched a few of these ,just in case I’m ever marooned
Jim seems like such a lovely man and a good cook too!
I've been missing these coastal foraging videos! My favourite.
Now the tourists have started to go home we should be able to get some more done. 😊👍🏻
@@TheFishLocker I live in cottage country in Ontario Canada. i feel your pain regarding tourists lol
Thank you so much John and Jim, with your video. Leaned how to cook mussels, joyful to watch this video ❤
I am glad you are finding the videos informative.
I really hope the Discovery Channel finds your page and does a series just following you, I have learned more about ocean life in your videos than all of college. Its crucial the younger generations know how to harvest mussels, when they are safe, when they are not, what seaweed is edible, what shell fish are edible, how to cook, clean and eat them ect. You are the PERFECT guy to teach them :)
We have been contacted before by an American Tv production company before but they just wanted us to be too dramatic and didn’t put the same importance on education. We shall just continue doing what we love.
@@TheFishLocker That's absolutely terrific of you - really shows the standards you have regarding your content! The educational aspect is what makes it so special :)
@@TheFishLocker that is so admirable. We appreciate you sticking to being you. I find such joy watching your videos. And your family and Jim are the icing on the cake. Thank you. ❤
Thanks for your reply. I will just have to sook them and spit out the pearls! The commercial rope grown ones don't seem to suffer. After 60 odd years of sailing I'm now house bound, so your films are great to watch. Thanks!
I am sorry to hear you are no longer out on the water. I hope the videos go some way to helping fill the void.
This looks so delicious, always love seeing these type of videos ♥️ I live in Arizona, but i hope to someday do some coastal foraging on my own, the fresh air and the waves clashing against each other just has such an eerie calming atmosphere. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and spreading such an amazing video, cheers
We love being on the shore. So calming. 😊
Thanks for all your great videos. Just brought my first boat purely based on watching your videos! You deserve a TV show 👌
Best of luck Adam. 👍🏻🛥
@@TheFishLocker legend! Thanks
Brilliant to see you providing Jim with his necessary items 👍☺️👍
I’m actually cooking a proper Yorkshire Sunday roast whilst watching this - just makes my mouth water with these recipes from Jim 🤤 hopefully my Yorkshire puds turn out as well as his Cornish Mussels !!👍🤞🤞
We do our best. 😊
Excellent. Practical advice and genuine, no-nonsense conservation the way it should be taught. Thank you.
No nonsense is how I try to live. Simple and honest. 👍🏻😊
Nothing better then a lazy Sunday watching your videos mate! Love the coastal foraging video! Cheers
Our pleasure Evan. 😊👍🏻
This is fantastic. I think we relate to these foraging segments more due to how varied the sea life is. Also, because of how delicious the sea life is too!😄
It is delicious 😬
Hi John I love these coastal foraging videos thanks for posting and it's great to see Jim again. Hopefully you don't get banned for your language
Haha. What language? 🤣
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Your father-in-law’s knife skills are a pleasure to watch. It’s obvious he know’s his way around the kitchen just from how he handles a knife.
He has been a professional chef all his life.
Found myself smiling the entire video! What a great job you have John - enjoy the sea then get to cook and enjoy a delicious meal :)
I am an engineer Jack. This is just my hobby. 😊
@@TheFishLocker Even better! Thanks for sharing your free time with us!
You have bought a tear to my eyes, I was maybe 10, my brother 7 and many years after going on holiday in Wales just off Colwyn Bay, We used to get mussels exactly as you describe. The 7 of us had 3 or 4 meals over our 2 weeks holiday. Finding crabs, star fish, so many more I can’t remember. Happy days.
Welcome to our channel Jennifer it sounds like you have some wonderful memories of your childhood on the shore. 😊💙
Many happy hours, going to collect mussels for tea, fishing with a rod me and my Bampa (big fisherman) made out of garden canes (better quality 60 years ago) I could tell you now how to whip on an line eye or a ferral. 😀. My pet hate is catching an eel 😝
This channel is criminally underrated and under-subscribed.
We do not play the CZcams game with clickbait and #’s or flashy collabs. We just share simple and honest content. 😊👍🏻
@@TheFishLocker And that is why we adore you, your beautiful family and what you do. Cheers.
As soon as this video Started I can see you absolutely love what you do I think I watched one a few months ago and I'm happy this popped up thank you for sharing
Great to see Jim again , love the foraging videos . The rock formation at the beginning of the video was the same I spotted on a walk from crackington haven to a remote beach from a distance I thought someone had been spraying lines on the rock but up close it was obvious another type of rock did look good though !
Very interesting isn’t it!!
Going to do some research , had forgotten about it until your video ...everyday a school day 😁
Metamorphic rock were minerals grow in layers under pressure...apparently
I never miss out on mussels whenever we go to the beach. Over the years I've seen black mussels nearly the size of my hand. Never aerated the water when purging, but definitely a great idea. A great week for you and your family ‼️
I feel it just encourages them to open up and start to filter/purge.
I love watching Jim cook! I missed him. Great video!
Hopefully we can do more foraging videos in the coming weeks. 😊👍🏻
How nice to have someone to catch the fresh seafood n another to cook n cooks deliciously.
A perfect family team. 😊💙
Learned a lot from this channel, you are a perfect mentor when it comes to sustainability and nature. Also a quick question. Are the mussel foraging videos a yearly series because I have noticed a bit of a theme?
It is the time of year when they are the best thing that is available. Like a tradition. 😊👍🏻
Repeat watch for me..1 year later..that’s how much i like your catch and cook videos
It's a great treat to find a nice foraging video from you John, and the cookup with Jim is always great to see. Sure do wish I had all his skills!
Jim is simply wonderful isn’t he. 😊
Jim is an incredible cook. Probably can make anything taste delicious, including escargot.
Nope. 🐌🤢
A knob of butter is a different size for different blokes, no shame in that
Haha.
Just had my dinner and now I am hungry again. Sustainable foraging, wine, garlic and cream what is not to like!
Glad you enjoyed joining us Anton. 😊👍🏻
Very nice ymym
😬
Having lived at the shore all my life and enjoyed seafood, watching your films takes foraging to a whole new level, mainly because of your prodigious knowledge and enthusiasm. But for goodness sake be careful out there! You've a lovely lady and a smashing wee lad so no risks are worth taking. You don't come across as a greedy person, which is a big plus! Greed makes people take chances when tired or when the weather is turning bad. One problem I've had with mussels is that wherever I collect them ( live in the West Coast of Scotland ) and in the cleanest water they usually have pearls in the flesh which cant be purged. Not too good for the teeth! Haven't seen any tips regarding this problem. I try to take them away from sandy areas, but it makes no difference. Nobody else seems to have this problem.
I am sorry John but I don’t I’m afraid. We are fortunate in that the ones in our area very rarely have pearls.
Jim is brilliant to watch and listen 😎
He’s wonderful isn’t he. 😊👍🏻
@@TheFishLocker I seriously wanna go foraging on the beaches now thanks to you guys 👍🤗
Thank you Jim and thank you John, I had a great time in the kitchen with you two.
Thanks Kevin. 😊

Cheers from Philadelphia, USA. I would love to shake your hand one day my friend. I've been fishing for 50 years. It's the best way to get rid of the every day stress of life. THANK YOU,GOD BLESS YOU MY FRIEND. ✌️
I can agree with that. A little time on the water always washes my stresses away. Take care Kevin and have a wonderful day. 😊
I'm sure the Kitchen smelled Divine... but the time spent with friends and family is Priceless!!
Doesn’t get much better does it. 😊
Whenever Jim mention the greenhouse when he is cooking, it makes me curious to see his garden 😊. This video made my mouth water, but every video with Jim cooking makes my mouth water 😅
