    I took off on a trip with only 4" of clearance and damaged my bedrail pronto. Need a minimum of 6-7. Ended up installing new suspension (beefier leaf springs) and added a 1" lift kit. Brought the RV into level and that allowed me to drop the hitch (raise the nose of RV) to get 7" of clearance.

    They recommend 5 to 6" clearance between the 5th wheel and the bed rails.

      Agree but you can get away with a bit less.

    I tried 3” and was way too close to hitting my bed. I now have 6” or a dollar bill fits length wise between the trailer and side box of my truck.
    Great video!

    have the same issue with my puma, add 2 inch spring spacers between the axles and springs and move you pin box back down two holes. it will give you the 5 inch recommended gap on the bed rails

      100% correct. Sharp turns on uneven pavement will destroy the bed and trailer

    Has the top of the truck bed made contact with the trailer since you made them that close? I have the exact same truck as you.

    I see you lowered the hitch box so that the ears are below the sidewinder pivot point ! I’m thinking that can’t work

    • @VITALExplorer
      @VITALExplorer  Před 3 lety +1

      You are correct, I had to lower it back by a dimension but this would not be an issue with a standard box.

    Thanks for the quick reply. The highest I could get mine was the third row from the top. I lowered my hitch all the way. The nose of my camper is still high. Maybe I need to raise the camper?

    How tall is the bed rails from the ground on this RAM? I’ve got a Titan XD that is 65” from the ground to the bed rail. I’ve had people tell me my truck is simply too high to attach a fifth wheel

    • @VITALExplorer
      @VITALExplorer  Před 3 lety

      Sorry man, the RAM is gone and I did not keep that measurement. My current setup with a 2" spacers on my Silverado measures at 60". Looks like 65" would be too high.

      etrailer makes a 3 inch lift kit for camper or flip the leaf springs of the camper and add 5 inch lift to camper

  • @howardmosebar987
    @howardmosebar987 Před 11 měsíci

    Sorry man, this is way off. Trailer leveling is done with the trailer suspension, hitch height and pinbox recess is for truck bedrail clearance. Which you just lost.

      That better be a super lightweight fifth wheel to put on a Tundra. I’ve had two of them. Great trucks but terrible payload capacity. No way to legally tow a fully loaded fifth wheel with people in the Tundra
