- Highlights from the bands I saw at the Darker Waves Festival at Huntington Beach Ca 11/18/2023.

I put this on CZcams to share with family and friends. I am surprised to see so many views. I need to clarify a few things. Being old, fat and with sciatica took a toll on me that day. The bands that are all older than me had more pep in their step. OMD just totally surprised me and I am now a new fan all over again. There were audio issues with some of the shows where the mics were not on. The worst was probably with The English Beat. I did see all the shows on their stages that I filmed except for The B-52's that was being broadcast on the New Order stage and Tears For Fears. I had just seen The B-52's in Las Vegas 2 months before, so to not miss New Order we went to that stage and I filmed the screen. After New Order I just didn't have the energy or strength to fight the 25-30K crowd that rushed to the Tears For Fears stage about a 1/4 of a mile walk on the sand. I knew I wouldn't get a good spot, so I stayed at the New Order stage and watched Tears For Fears being broadcast live. So that is why there are no bands on the stage for B-52's and Tears for Fears. So Tears for Fears was packed just like New Order was. I have seen Tears for Fears twice before and wish I could have made it to their stage to see them a third time. The songs from The Hurting album are my favorite, and was my first vinyl record I ever bought. The original cover too with them and their bangs and ponytails at the lake. This was my 4th time seeing New Order, which is hard to do in the USA since they don't do a lot of shows here like everywhere else, so I had to see them. When they started with Regret, it was so powerful, I felt like I was a young man again, and for a brief time my pain was gone. But by the time they played Love Will Tear Us Apart, I could barely stand and so laying on the beach watching Tears For Fears was all I could do.
The sound:
What you hear on the video is not even close to the true sound. I was using a new DJI Pocket 3 camera to record the video and sound. Since I was there and can remember the true sound and how it felt, I can easily bypass the poor sound quality of the recording when I watch it. I can understand if you were not there and just watching this that you would think the sound was horrible. Every concert I film with my Iphone or this DJI Pocket, I am always unimpressed with the sound quality of the recording. If you watch my Pet Shop Boys video when they played at what was called the Microsoft Theater for the Super tour, that is probably the best audio I had. So the bands sounded great, but my recordings do not do them justice.

I really miss going to concerts at Irvine Meadows Amphitheater. That place was the best.
A great time to be young wild and free growing up in Southern California. I have no regrets. It was a bunch of fast times and I have so many beautiful memories. For all of it...I am truly Grateful.
The lucky ones live in California. We don't even get CLOSE to having festivals like this in MInnesota. :< Thank you for sharing these highlights. That must have been SOME day :>
It's amazing how OMD sound nearly identical to how they sounded in the 80s. Or even the 70's!
It's a shame they had to cut their songs off early, there's always time issues with so many bands so I'm grateful for what we got.

OMD and Human League were INCREDIBLE! We had such a fun time at DarkerWaves.....even with all the people trying to push to the front (aka annoying!).
When I got my first OMD CD in the late 80's I was like this is the most romantic album I have ever heard, and I was heavily into music.
This filled my Gen X soul!

I love how New Order made you forget about your pain for a minute, I wish it had lasted. I would kill to see all these bands, I'm happy you got to go and had a nice beach to lay on, I can relate.

I love going to a gig and completely missing the performances due to my phone being glued to my hands and both my arms in splints to support said arms, then I go home and watch what I've craptured and think to myself, this recording sucks, if only I had been there to watch these bands live...oh if only...😵💫😵💫😵💫
Sorry you feel my recording sucks. My family and kids that didn't get to go have enjoyed watching it and I did it for them. I hope you enjoyed parts of the video I shared.

Tears for Fears was a Video Feed? crazy...
April 18th 2024... Darker Waves 2024 lineup or date not yet announced probably to avoid cannibalizing Cruel World 2024 in May (about 4 weeks from now). I'll wait for the lineup to be announced and if it's even halfway as good as the one from 2023, I'm going. Coming from NYC. This is way better than the Cruel World 2023 festival.

Thanks for posting this. Loved your production, intro video, transitions, labeling etc. Really nice effects. We saw almost the same acts, making the same transitions (maybe off about a song in a place or two) but then when New Order finished we headed back to the Darker Stage to catch Tears for Fears. In an older....world, I'd add the following bands to this line up: Talking Heads, Missing Persons, Flock of Seagulls, the Fixx, Berlin, Echo and the Bunnymen, Go Go's The Bangles, Plimsels, Ah Ha, SaGa, the Fixx, Stray Cats, Madness, Fishbone, Roxy Music, Cabernet Voltaire, UB40, and Oingo Boingo as the Headliner.
Damn I can smell the Final Net hairspray from here.
Oh wow! I just reading now that Jim Ladd died today. He was huge on L.A. Radio in the Classic Rock genre. That's a bummer. Dusty Street just died last month. Damn time is speeding up. Everyone's feeling it.

Thank you for sharing this. I would've gone if I'd have known. The bands sounded good. Fire whoever promoted it. I see commercials for something called Loser Fest w/Corey Feldman and Limp Bizket but not for this. That's a crime.

OMD still retained their original spirit better than most of these bands....Bernard Sumner from New Order went off key a lot but I guess he's kind of known for that. They miss Peter Hook live too.
Human League, Devo seemed to sound the best
Many of them may not be in the best shape of their lives - particularly their voices - but they still managed to deliver good shows..... unlike the disaster, the fiasco that was Siouxsie at Cruel World in May 2023. Worse than Yoko Ono at her worst.

They're there. A lot of people stayed and a lot of people left as well. They most likely left early to beat the traffic jam
It's because TFF were on the other stage. This Waves Stage is at the opposite end of the fest so they showed live video of the performance. They did the reverse when New Order was on this stage.
Tears for Fears was packed. Check out Head Over Heels here czcams.com/video/0CDb0DfsHgY/video.html If you check these videos they don't show Tears for Fears (or B52s) on the stage because this videographer didn't travel back from the Waves Stage where New Order performed to the Darker Stage where Tears for Fears performed. Near the end of the festival when they weren't using every stage they started broadcasting the performance from another stage (ie B52s (Darker Stage) were head to head with Human League (Tiki Stage) leaving the Waves Stage open so they broadcast B52s onto the screens at the Waves Stage, so those arriving for New Order saw the B52s broadcast on the Waves Stage, and when New Order finished on the Waves Stage, they started broadcast Tears for Fears performance onto the screens of the Waves Stage even though Tears for Fears was performing live on the Darker Stage.
Ahhh gotcha, makes sense. I clearly was not paying attention or else I would've noticed that the band wasn't on stage! hahah thanks!
Roland Orzabal from tears for fears has not aged well. Does not look good for 62 years old. Not sure if it was a lot of drinking or drugs but wow!
Especially since the singer of OMD is 64 (I just looked it up) and still looks great and moves around the stage as much as he did in the 80's

THIS is the festival I would have gone to if I had known about it in January 2023, instead of the LAME Cruel World '23. I have seen the bill for CW24 and I am not going because it's shit. I'll wait for Darker Waves 2024 to be announced.
People with their phones up: you are ruining it for short people who wish to be present in the moment and enjoy the concert with bare eyeballs. Tip: snap a few pics & buy a T-shirt
Did everyone leave after New Order? There was nobody left for Tears for Fears. So sad
No. Tears For Fears played in a different stage. Everyone from New Order had to go all the way there. I stayed as they broadcasted it on the New Order Stage. I was too tired to get there and fight the crowd. 25-30k people.
The experience was not good. Food and merch were awful. $42 for a little chicken and rice? The lineup had too many conflicting set times and it was hard to get from one stage to the other in time to catch the beginning of the next act. Most disappointing was the B-52s-Human League-New Order conflict. Had to leave early from B-52s, missed Human League, and New Order were boring. Left a few songs into the set and called it a night. Not worth the money and will not return next year.
Hard to follow Joy D...I mean New Order.....Look at that lack of crowd for Tears for Fears, exceptional music, just hard to follow something like New Order.
Having a fest in the sand has to be the stupidest idea ever. Never again
What a crap show
Only living 20 minutes from downtown Huntington Beach I almost thought about going to this. If you were there watching these artists it was probably really cool to go but from watching it on CZcams it doesn't seem like any of these artists know how to sing anymore. Guitars out of tune etc. and being boxed in like sardines I'm glad I didn't spend the money to go to this. I love these artists but I'm really not impressed musically after all these years I think it's time for them to retire all of them. I think I'll stick to going to punk in the Park in Orange every year.
Definitely sounded like hit and miss... Devo, OMD, and Psychedelic Furs seemed to be ok
Go to shows or see bands that will make you happy. That's really the bottom line. Many people looked like they had fun that day watching and enjoying bands they saw. If you think old punk rockers sounds better than any of the band played on this festival, you will get a quick reality check.
