How I Take Notes For Computer Science With Obsidian: A Deep Dive and Tutorial

- I've made a few videos about how I study Computer Science using Obsidian and Notion. Because of that quite a few people have kept asking me for a longer video about how I take notes inside of Obsidian. This is that video. In it, I take you through my note-taking process with Obsidian, focusing on how it benefits Computer Science students. Still, truthfully everything in this video is applicable to note-taking of all kinds, not just Computer Science.

I've already graduated in computer engineering and still hadn't known about any app this good, great video!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the insight. I just started my computer science degree and this is going to help a lot.
I've been doing this and I've been chasing other people's way of note taking that I forget I'm doing effectively what works for me best. Thank you for this!
Great video. I found it a little awkward using Obsidian for the first time with my CS classes
Great video Siddhant! I've recently been using Capacities as a notes app a lot and found it great for programming notes and CS stuff.
I have watched a few different videos on how people have set up their Obsidian vaults for Uni/School.
And this one was my favorite. Thank you!
Thanks for all the ideas and helpful information
I don't study computer science but this a good setup for architecture as well
Thank you mate great intro!
thank you, ı am cs student too, ı stuctured my obsidian because of you, thanks..
I was going crazy over how to show computer code in obsidian. Every time i added some, it broke the .md structure. The ``` are a life saver. Thank you!!!
SAME OMG I JUST SPENT LIKE 3 HOURS LAST NIGHT TRYING TO FIGURE IT OUT
Bro i legit am just starting a CS degree and only found the app today so i was searching on yt for tips on how to use it and your video came up. so good
Edit: actually nevermind I'm actually just gonna use onenote, obsidian is gonna take too long and seems way too complex for what I wanna do, maybe later I'll use it tho, but for now, definetly not.
i remember telling u about obsidian lol; reallllyyy good video loved it!
and i use the same theme lmao
Thanks! I've learned more by watching a real example instead of just a theoretical explanation.
Georgia tech students have a certain vibe to them, like you can tell when someone is from Georgia Tech, I don't know, it might be just be.
But since I have interacted with so many students, you can tell the Georgia Tech guys!
Great video by the way, however I'm still searching for a system that make sense to me, and wether I should use obsidian or notion, or any of the at all!
20:07 What do you use to change the text color? The Highlightr plugin or just HTML?
felt like writing readme files in Github
Thanks!! Template creation and note taking examples were helpful to me. How are you able to use dash '-' in that way without triggering bulleted list for items?
how can i create flashcard(space repetition) in obsidian?any plugin ? previously I've used Anki that was very complicated & I tried Remotes but its comes with subscriptions
would you recommend me " how to use obsidian for revision (spaced repetition & active recall ) ?"I know there are plugins(anki) available however it involves complexity in using with obsidian(my perception) plz suggest me some how to use how to use obsidian for revision (spaced repetition & active recall ) ? tnx in advance!!!
I am so thankful for your summary and setup instructions. I started CS BS and am trying to figure out how to write JAVA code examples in boxes like you had mid video. How did you do this?
```java
// write code here
```
@@mariojoshuaaugustine5718 such an august comment
@@mariojoshuaaugustine5718 See, now if the guy that posted this just said this, I wouldnt be mad about wasting 15 minutes of my life watching him attempt to do/explain anything of use.
I saw your professor's names and just realized you are from Georgia Tech as well!
@sid whats the theme used ?
Can you make same in excel or apple notes app
Obsidian seems good for note taking, but try make a indented collapsing code block :)
haha good catch
I think you could use a heading for that. Something like this below should work
# Code example
```
System.out.println("Hi mom");
```
Thanks for using the Things theme ;)
Thanks for making it!
do you think an ipad is worth getting for someone starting a course in CS? especially since learning is lifelong and having it combined with say a macbook could be amazing for productivity?
i think an ipad is probably worth it, some of my friends have them and they really like taking notes on them. I might get one myself eventually
great video! i still prefer notion tho but thats just my opinion :)
Yeah, the important thing for any note-taking system is just use whatever you like as long as you'll actually be taking notes.
Notion's search function sucks. I am about to abandon it mainly for this reason. Foam with VS Code seems to do it for me, nothing fancy, gets the job done.
Judge me all you want but I think you're the cutest indian cs youtuber
Do you use anki?
Did you ever face the problem that interface panels in obsidian become bizarrely enlarged and you can't reduce them?
I've never ran into this
great video!!! I was wondering how you sync your notes?
GitHub
Have you ever had a situation in which the template title shows as the main heading in very big letters and there is no changing it to #date goes here? Because if I change it to "#date goes here" the heading of the template also gets renamed to that.
Can't say that I have
idk if you ever figured this out on your own but for future people, in the settings > appearance > advanced "show inline title" must be toggled off
18:19 how do you make your code notes to look colorful?
put it in a markdown code block, like
```python
python code goes here
```
Ah yes. I too am learning Rust (though not getting anywhere with it yet).
Fun fact, Im only learning tNice tutorials because tNice tutorials is 99.9% of my ti in my free ti
Bro can you share those notes please
At about 20:55 you say
"If you think you can't trust yourself to review the slides again, then don't. Uh...*pause* then don't don't take notes *pause* then take notes if you think you can't trust yourself to review the slides but i feel like with most people when you do take notes you're not really going to be reviewing them all too often"
Can you please explain that to me? I feel like your on to something really important and this is the part of the video where you're like "This is how you be successful", but I don't understand it at all.
See about org mode. Maybe you'll get interested. Org mode is to markdown like what C++++ would be to C
Not very helpful
bro turn off that music
Pretty random, and rambling
Very bad you cannot sync
You can sync. For official sync, it's $100 a year or $60 with student discount. You can also do it yourself by backing up the vault folder.
